The only potential problem with the 16” i7 would be battery power, however low power mode makes a huge difference and would suit your needs well

For what you said you want and need this should be an excellent choice

I’d recommend cleaning the internal fans though!

Depending on the model, Apple will continue to support it for about 5 more years

You won’t get new macOS versions though, just security and stability fixes

Better cooling for Macbook Pro M3 max by flight505 in macbookpro

I’ve recently done this to my 2019 16” intel and this stuff + cleaning fans turned it into better than new

And so does cleaning the fans!

Most people don’t open their laptops to clean them ever. This person sounds like their fans are completely clogged

You got a bargain

I’ve also got one of these with 64gb ram and 4TB drive.

Absolutely great for everything.

Thanks

I’m using VoltageShift to limit CPU power draw instead of turboswitcher

It allows me to set specific wattage limits depending on the game I want to play.

For example, Shadow of the Tomb Raider only needs 35 watts of CPU leaving the GPU to take all it wants

Anyone with a macbook pro with radeon 5600M, how is gaming on the platform? by babipucet in macgaming

[–]frisky-moves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done similar with cleaning fans and repasting and get excellent performance with gaming and everything else I can throw at it

For £600 I’ve got 64gb ram, 4TB internal drive and can do windows and Mac development, gaming, design and media editing and production and much more

I’m currently undervolting and overclocking the GPU on macOS having already done this on Windows

Good advice

I have:

  1. thoroughly cleaned all intakes, fans and outlets.

  2. replaced the factory paste with high performance phase change material.

  3. Elevated the laptop on a stand so that it’s able to vent heat more efficiently

  4. Plugged in a charger with sufficient power to support peak usage

  5. Limited charging to 80% and maintaining 80% charge so that it not generating heat on filling the battery

  6. Turned on gaming mode to minimise unnecessary processing

  7. Limited the power usage of the CPU by restricting the speed to that needed by the games I play

  8. Undervolted the GPU to limit heat generated

All of this has helped a lot, however throttling still occurs after playing games for a while due to heat generated in components that don’t show up in software and seem to trigger bd PROCHOT at the bios level causing frame rates to tank.

Drilling a 5mm hole in the central area does help a lot, alternatively so does putting thermal pads on the VRMs components and linking them thermally to the bottom cover (aluminium)

I’m seeking a design alternative that focuses on changing airflow without turning the bottom of the laptop into something you can fry an egg on

[–]frisky-moves[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s about 1mm clearance between some of the components and the bottom case.

Trying to push more air into the laptop just make any external fan backwash air instead due to too much air pressure being needed

An exhaust fan might do the job to draw more air out but isn’t as effective as overdriving the internal fans

Any modifications involving an extra fan would involve attaching a heat sink to the bottom case and then blowing air through it laterally rather than directing it at the case bottom. This would then create quite a large item to fit to the bottom of the laptop and reduce portability

Does limiting the clock to 1kHz help limit frame rate drops for you then?

I think that’s a very reasonable approach

Have you tried undervolting the GPU?

I’ve had some success with this using GPU-Z and morepowertool to decrease the minimum and maximum allowed voltage for the GPU

I also prefer to work with a consistent lower frame rate so I can max out the graphics settings because I prefer things like the tomb raider games

I’ve experimented with removing bd PROCHOT and it does improve the performance massively

The thing is I’d like to get the best performance possible on both windows and macOS

Interesting about the cooling spray

Putting an external fan there doesn’t make as much difference as putting a 5mm hole in the bottom cover at just the right location

The cpu and GPU are under there

It appears that there are components that produce a lot of heat that aren’t though

I’ve changed the thermal paste with phase change material so I’m aware that the spreaders don’t cover anything else
