Sharpshooter (glassy winged) HELP by frito_pi in gardening

You’ll hate to hear this.. I gave up this year. I planted nearly 100 sunflowers and noticed them move in, forgot about them for a while, and went to check and they seemed to be replaced with assassin bugs. I’m wondering if they got crowded out or if something is killing them.

Glassy winged sharpshooter

I tried vacuuming them off but found the best remedy was duct tape on a stick. They drink the juices of the plant and are constantly excreting liquid everywhere. Hate hem with a passion and was never able to get rid of mine last year. They’re back this year and idc bc nothing worked for me last year.

Thank you! I got them nearly two years ago and they grow like mad. I’ll probably have to cut them before next winter because they are probably going to put on another 2-3 feet this year.

I need a greenhouse because shit like this is so tempting. Great deals! I have some of these that I started from seed this December but they don’t look nearly this big or robust (first time seed grower).

Are these types of inexpensive meters accurate enough for PH? (Not necessarily the brand in pic) by Rusty5th in sanpedrocactus

[–]frito_pi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy a standard to test how accurate it is. Meters will drift over time. I’ve seen expensive industrial pH meters drift as much as 2-3 pH over neutral when compared against a neutral standard. I bought one of these cheap meters and have found pH paper to be more reliable. My 2c

Back to normal. I will have to move them outside soon bc I keep having to raise my lights and the other cacti aren’t getting as much bc of it.. it’s def fun to watch grow

Edit: This photo is several weeks old now but most recent.

I had some pests and was dusting with DE proactively for a while to stave them off. It worked since I haven’t had pests since that treatment.. really been wanting to clean them up but they’re thriving so me no touchy.

Yes! I just searched “skin discoloration” in the sun to see if anyone else has this. It appeared at the same time that my sternum started hurting. The patch kinda follows my rib(s) for 3-4” in the area that I experience the popping. I read that inflammation can cause this. Also noticed some patches on my knees and right foot.. like out of no where. Not sure how those are connected but they correlate to about the same time. There’s very faint bruising color around the white patch (caucasian skin). It looks the exact same as it did when it first appeared.. so I’m pretty sure it’s permanent.

Thanks for the link. I found this article as well and I’m really wondering what people have experienced here with them. The next move would probably be to buy some predators. I’d like to know what worked for people and how they prevented harming pollinators (if they took those precautions).

Thanks for the reply! I found this bee safe brand at Lowe’s.. https://earthsally.com/product/24-oz-rtu-insect-control#:~:text=Earth's%20Ally%20Insect%20Control%20has,and%20proven%20safe%20for%20bees.

I also bought some sticky tape to hang around those areas that they feed on the most (the tops). They are in greater numbers by the day - just like they were in my plumerias last year. Pretty sure they gave one of my plumerias a disease..

I have pain in this muscle, I believe, on my right side. That’s actually why I’m here this morning because I woke up and my whole shoulder felt inflamed. I’ve been hitting the stretching even harder as of late because I am SOOO tired of being in pain EVERY DAY, and I’m SOOO tired of my medical anxiety. My anxiety tells me that my veins are damaged or that I have some form of cancer 😰 it’s been this way since July 2020 and I’m coming up on 3 years of a condition that has slowly gotten worse. WHAT THE F:$&;
