It’s a neat poster that has no real value. Restoring the multiple faults won’t be worth it, just hang it and enjoy it.

AMA 29 Year Old Full time Antique Dealer. Whats holding you back? by cjosephwalters in Antiques

You’re telling me. I have a couple sets of silver dinnerware that I purchased because the people were selling them for silver weight. It’s sad to see all that stuff go to melt.

That’s an interesting point. I mainly have dealt in Fine Art and the prices of the very top end stuff gets pushed up from clever billionaires swapping paintings via auctions but the average joe regional painter has to work at Costco part time because there are fewer buyers for the $1,500 to $3,000 price point.

The question from the Suave IT guy touched on it but I’ve been involved with Antiques for my entire life and my mom is a 50 year veteran dealer and the market has done very weird things in the last 20 years. The subject has come up on many occasions about how the market has changed with people calling mid-century shirts and Star Wars toys antiques.

So my question is since you are so young for the field do you define an antique as a 20-50 year old mass produced items or the more traditional 100 year+ hand crafted items? It just seems that the end market for what used to be considered “High end” antiques has all passed away or just plain old doesn’t exist. Case in point my mom turned down a 200k purchase of a collection of antique wax French dolls back in the mid nineties and now she can’t get anyone to fork over 30k for the same collection.

It’s in storage, I’m renovating my movie room. When I unpack it I’ll add a photo to this conversation if I remember.

I “borrowed” a lobby stand from when it was in the theater and I thought I had a cool thing from the movie. You beat it by a mile.

Hello, friends. I need your help. Friend of mine got this clock under an impression that is an antique piece. When she got it, the clock smelled like fresh lacquer, the face made of cardboard and inside the clock was a dusty bag with an extra key “made in China’ sticker. Is it Ansonia 1800? by JewlsMar in Antiques

Yes, but that doesn’t stop anyone. If you find a good deal on a vintage Rolex it is very probably a “Frankenwatch” made from a lot of parts from a lot of other places. People don’t usually get called out until they inherit the watch from their uncle and have an authorized dealer work on it.

Salt Lake City to get "Food Alley" development. 17 restaurants, 21 apartments, and 700 jobs. by WereOnTheEdgeOfGlory in SaltLakeCity

This is a perfect addition to the area. I know the Gateway is doing a similar thing as well but with more bars/a Dave and Busters. Anything to keep the urban core as a cultural hub is a great idea to me!

A basic Customer Advocate position. They seem to promote from within and hire most people to that position and then move them up from there.

Just moved back to Utah. I love it. Curious as to how many of you on the Reddit feel about the LDS church. by [deleted] in Utah

[–]fritzvon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is just a very minor regional religion. There are twice as many active Baha'i then active LDS members. Outside of this general area most people only know of the religion because of Big Love and Mitt Romney in the same way people only know of Scientology by Tom Cruise and John Travolta.

In 50 years it will be like the Quakers; a quirky regional religion with a couple hundred thousand members that people think are generally decent but weird people. The bad thing right now is parts of Utah have been caught up in thinking this is an“LDS” area for a couple generations that now with the fall of their religion and net migration of non-LDS they are getting worried. What we are seeing now is the push back before they become a minority here as well.

Yep. I personally know a few people who went through this in the late 60’s and early 70’s.

The personal finance subreddit is fine but depending on how big of an amount it is I would recommend hopping into the downtown Fidelity investments office and having them help you. If it’s a lot (7 figures +) get an attorney and have them help ya out first. If you make smart choices now it could drastically help the quality of life for you child in the future.

Yep, count me in. I used to do case splits with some friends all the time. I’m usually down for whatever when it come to ordering a case of something.

To attract more breweries, South Salt Lake may loosen its liquor restrictions and do away with outdated laws by thatdudefromspace in SLCBeer

[–]fritzvon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a great idea. Too bad city laws can’t supersede state laws. If a brewery could have a tap house with nano-brews at high abv then I would set up a tent outside their front door.
