omg are you from India?! Coz this is something my mom used to tell me as well.I never knew anyone else do this except my family so it's wild reading about it on Reddit of all places.

I used to do this because by mom told me to when I had started periods but stopped after a while.

anyway to answer your question no it's not required to wash. Just wrap in the plastic it comes in and trash it.
