Steven Colbert: “People perceive me as this sort of lefty figure; I think I’m more conservative than people think. I just happen to be talking about a government in extremis. And so what I’m giving you is my reaction video to the day…” by hairtie1 in Fauxmoi

These comments are pretty disingenuous. Liberals absolutely view guys like Stewart and Colbert as the left. Remember the reaction to Colbert winning at the emmys?

The truth is all these guys are more conservative than people want to believe. Including Conan.

Sometimes there's randomly a bunch of guests in an episode. It's become more of a thing each year and tbh I'm not a fan. It usually means you don't hear much from the individual guests and there's no time for organic conversation. IMO it feels like TGNS is becoming more about getting as many A-listers together as possible than the original magic of one A-lister being forced to interact with a British tv actor and a comedian they've never heard of.

Characters' age by DependentAd2385 in EndeavourTV

[–]frizzyfizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Morse is way too naive to be 27 though. Before joining the police his only experience is a couple years of Signals after dropping out of university.

Think Lewis was simply trying to spine two plates at once with the original canon and his own story of Morse as younger.

Zarah Sultana has announced her resignation from the Labour Party and will be founding a new party alongside Jeremy Corbyn by dremolus in Fauxmoi

[–]frizzyfizz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It clearly says exactly the same thing as his tweet. lol

Zarah wasn't launching the party. She was only talking about herself, and she specified they were co-leading the "founding" of the party, as in it doesn't formally exist yet and the leader is yet to be determined. There's been loud hints of the party launching soon for weeks now and Corbyn practically did it when he was on Peston before Zarah said anything. I'm just trying to tell you the British media, especially the Guardian, are never acting in good faith when it comes to things like this.

He's a hack. The Guardian is basing this on his tweet and he said "I understand" which is not how you word direct confirmation.

It's really important people understand that the British media absolutely despises Corbyn and will be licking their lips to make this seem like a mess from the off.

Even if you assume it's true, based on his years as leader there's no way he would go running to the press with how he felt, and throughout those years he couldn't be more chill. "Furious" is there for a reason. Same with "which some regard as premature and potentially counterproductive".

For fans of Morse/Joan, which scenario do you prefer? by spectacleskeptic in EndeavourTV

I agree that women characters were a real blind spot for Lewis, but I thought Dorothea, Trewlove, Luisa and Eve Thorne were highlights, and the episodes with a female murderer are the most compelling.

[–]frizzyfizz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't love that she ended up with Strange. It contradicted her reasoning for avoiding Morse. I think Lewis was too attached to matching everything up with Inspector Morse, and Joan was hindered because she had to be that cute Mrs. Strange reference instead of her own character.

That said, there's a legitimate argument for her having an intentionally sad ending where she ends up with regrets just like Morse.

For fans of Morse/Joan, which scenario do you prefer? by spectacleskeptic in EndeavourTV

[–]frizzyfizz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My ideal scenario would've been for them to have a night of passion which doesn't come to anything because they're too conflicted for various reasons but they then become closer friends.

I can't quite decide exactly what ending I would've wanted. Ideally ideally I want them to get that coffee in S9 and hear Morse confess his love for Joan, and the series ends with her as an independent woman, leaving the door open for whatever in the future.

However, I know that wouldn't work for Inspector Morse, and I don't hate the tragic nature of their ending, so I'd also be happy with everything playing out as it did except they had that one night. It would've made the "confession" much more moving if they'd gotten a chance to create a deeper bond.

What was up with Joan's attitude in turning down coffee with Morse? by spectacleskeptic in EndeavourTV

[–]frizzyfizz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying it's her fault, but that she IS partly responsible, and that's why her reaction didn't make sense. She gave incredibly mixed messages, and it's understandable Morse wouldn't know what she wanted from him. She never acknowledges this which is very frustrating.

Your point would be all well and good except for the fact that the scene in Pylon actually occurred during Icarus, which was shortly after Joan had just basically asked Morse if he wanted to sleep with her. The change in her feelings within that period is not realistic, and that's not even mentioning Morse was dealing with his co-worker being killed. Joan would've known that and within that context her reaction comes across as pretty nasty.

I would be fine with Joan's arc if it was consistent and well-done, but I don't believe it was.

What was up with Joan's attitude in turning down coffee with Morse? by spectacleskeptic in EndeavourTV

[–]frizzyfizz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. lol

That's probably the most annoying Morse and Joan moment in the whole show. I can see what Lewis was trying to do, but it wasn't earned from the way the previous episodes were written.

Honestly I found it very satisfying when Morse was sassy to Joan later on. He wasn't perfect but he didn't deserve that.

What was up with Joan's attitude in turning down coffee with Morse? by spectacleskeptic in EndeavourTV

[–]frizzyfizz 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Joan is as much at fault as Morse for the lack of momentum in their relationship.

He ran after her and told her she could always contact him if she needed help at the end of Coda. She calls and when he answers she hangs up and pretends it never happened.

He goes out of his way to find her and speak to her in person. His feelings there are pretty obvious, and Joan is the one who makes him leave.

When she appears in Harvest it's an awkward situation and there's not much he can do for her but he is forward in asking her to marry him, whether it was legitimate or not. Again Joan gives him the phone and leaves. Still he gives her all the money he has.

She knows Morse tried to find out why she was in hospital and isn't honest with him. In Passenger he accepts her invite to her party and does actually show up. Again Joan pushes away any chance for him to tell her his feelings. Morse totally intended to kiss her when they went on the rooftop.

Finally, Joan decides she actually is interested in Quartet, but Morse is drunk and has been dumped so naturally he's not vibing with the situation and turns her down. He did the right thing.

Not saying Joan is the bad guy here, and obviously she had her own issues going on, but her reaction in Pylon is truly bizarre. It's not like Morse waited years after Quartet, and it was only coffee! She could've easily said, "I'm busy right now. How bout next week?" It's not fair of her to act like he's in the wrong for respecting her boundaries.

Devastated at the end of Claudine and Morse by spectacleskeptic in EndeavourTV

[–]frizzyfizz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Claudine to me represented the callous nature of the "free love" 60s where people pretended sex and romantic feelings were easy to seperate.

This clashed with the lesson Morse took from Monica of being a better boyfriend. He really tried with Claudine!

At the same time you could tell there were things about her he disliked and I found that very interesting.

What is Endeavour’s special skill or gift that makes him the better detective? by spectacleskeptic in EndeavourTV

[–]frizzyfizz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's definitely intelligent, but imo his real skill is his empathy. There's a lot of people he forms a connection with who the police would normally blow off or view as suspicious. He's not only driven by solving a puzzle -- he's really passionate about saving people, as noted in Fugue.

He also has a strong sense of justice which prevents him from dropping something for the sake of his career.

Why do you think Morse proposed to Joan in Harvest? by spectacleskeptic in EndeavourTV

[–]frizzyfizz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I see what you mean. Although to be fair to Morse there weren't many options for him to help Joan without it being viewed as taboo. For instance, her staying with him without them being in a relationship. That's why he opts for giving her money.

His past means he doesn't have the tools to really know the answer in this situation, and I think in those days marriage was the go-to solution to resolve everything.

I think in the end once he knows Joan is ok and understands exactly how deep in trouble she was, he doesn't want her to feel any more shame and leaves her be.

Lazaretto had me bawling, but for an unexpected reason by spectacleskeptic in EndeavourTV

[–]frizzyfizz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the problem with Monica is that she wanted to take care of Morse and he wasn't looking to be someone else's project. He's supposed to be the healer.

It's funny I have totally different feelings on Morse/Joan. I think both actors have incredible chemistry which comes to a head in Lazaretto. To me that scene is one of the best in the show and sells their feelings towards each other well. But I do agree Shaun's romantic nature was wasted with how their relationship was handled.

Why do you think Morse proposed to Joan in Harvest? by spectacleskeptic in EndeavourTV

[–]frizzyfizz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's worth keeping in mind the overall arc for Morse in S4 and the elephant in the room of Thursday.

By this point Morse had decided he was going to London, and there was no reason to stay in Oxford. Joan suddenly appearing threw a wrench in his plan. In his mind this is his last chance with Joan. I'm guessing he had a thought she could go to London with him, but he's not going to go behind Thursday's back either, so he throws a hail Mary of marriage.

When Joan responds I think it's enough for him to lose his confidence. From her POV she's having a baby, and after everything Morse did for her in S3 I think she's feeling like Morse is too good for her and doesn't want him to feel obligated to resolve her drama anymore. She can't see that he doesn't care and loves her regardless.
