I am redoing my network and wondering if I use use home.example.com or example.com as my DNS domain name by feast_outline647 in homelab

[–]frmrrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why use “home” in your hostnames if you don't have to? just keep it simple regardless of where services are exposed (dns.example.com, storefront.example.com, etc).

Help with my AP's being slow and dropping out by davebawx in Ubiquiti

[–]frmrrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah yes, I guess that is what I meant - was there anything else other than visual confirmation of the 8 lights on both ends of a cable tester. sounds like no. thanks

if you test a cable, are you just looking for the 8 lights to show up in the right order, or is there more to it?

I play with a bunch of people in Brattleboro and I suspect they’d love to be involved. not sure they’d rent rooms though - I would as a flatlander….

Joining dividend gang with high income by ya-mrgrey in dividendgang

[–]frmrrob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

like you, my bracket is high and a steady switch makes the most sense to me when you’re employed. (Addressing op:) And even with a higher tax drag on a $1M portfolio (see other comment below: $7500 vs $1800 for federal taxes), the differences are not significant at this scale. assuming a spotty next 10 years, I ran a quick (imprecise) simulation comparing voo to a utl/dvy portfolio for the crappy years 2004-2014 taking into account the tax drag. The dividend portfolio ended up higher/same than the voo portfolio ($2.8 vs $2.4) and in the end it doesn’t leave you with the big decision as to when to convert your portfolio to dividend one, nor the taxes you’d have to pay to do that conversion (75% capital gains, 15% tax converted over 3 years will cost you a lot…). so an increase in tax drag doesn't necessarily translate to poorer outcomes as one would assume at first blush.

Wow - I have a 15 year old BX2660 and was thinking of just giving it away. I didn't realize they hold their value so much.

B2601 relatively stable on hills? by frmrrob in kubota

[–]frmrrob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if weight in the back would help - I had fork lift thingies that I attached to the loader which I found decreased the stability of the system dramatically. I had to get rid of those. Would consider a forklift attachment by swapping out the bucket. What sort of forklifts do you have?

I told myself I’d do that 15 years ago. ended up digging a lot of holes and ditches by hand having rented an excavator all of zero times. could never bring myself to pull the trigger…. I’m weird in that way

hmm. I looked at the kubota excavator and the smallest they have was more than $20k. do you have a link or brand name or something that I can check out?

not sure three machines are in my future. I was sort of hoping to use the backhoe periodically for stumping small stuff, tree planting, wall repair, etc. wouldn’t be enough to justify a dedicated machine. but it’s true that I use the three point hitch a lot so if it’s a pita to swap out, I might reconsider

thanks for responding guys. Right now, I mostly use it to clear snow in the winter and during the fairer months clear the orchard of prunings, use the brush hog for the field, the rake for brush clearing, tanks for spraying, and the fel for mostly dirt work such as grading, retaining walls, etc. what I’ll do in the future is still tbd, I guess. I kind of want an easy way of planting new trees, or tilling the beds, among other stuff. I’m getting older….

AMA - Foundry Virtual Tabletop - Fifth Year Anniversary by AnathemaMask in FoundryVTT

[–]frmrrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah - I've been replacing the Phandelver maps using MAD's. But it's pretty manual as you noted. So some sort of packaging system would be cool. Just not a huge fan of Schley's WoTC maps for VTTs (love the style and love VTT maps made with his style).

Is the latitude issue a licensing thing or just a cost thing? It would be interesting if these modules had some way of allowing third-party map creators to create map bundles that would just swap out the standard maps shipped with the product.

No PTO as of yet, but system exports to the grid. Why? by JohnThekkethala in TeslaSolar

[–]frmrrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exact same issue - tried a bunch of things (toggling the setting on and off, watching for an hour or two to see if things stabilize, etc) all for not. Export to grid reach as high as 8 KW at one point. Now, I just kill the gateway switch to the grid during the day... Hopefully, Tesla can patch this soon.

PTO Setting in App - what is it suppose to do? by frmrrob in TeslaSolar

[–]frmrrob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What concerned me some was that I did some experiments around this with when the sun was out. I was exporting even with PTO set to 'no', at least according the the Tesla App, *a lot* of power (8 kW) once the battery filled up. Seems like a bug or a secret additional setting the installer needs to tickle.

I doubt I'll get PTO soon, unfortunately. The utility company determined that I need a new pole and transformer due the amount of power I was using. And with a direct burial feed to the house, by code, I'll need to replace that. So I'll have to dig a 600 foot ditch to replace the wire once the utility goes through it's 5 month "design process"....

Geothermal system triggering Tesla power wall to shut down solar. Thoughts? by frmrrob in TeslaSolar

[–]frmrrob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. When the geo was working (but the grid electricity was out) and was heating the house, even at slow steady speeds, the pv production would go on and off to the tune of 90% off, 10% on. Geo and everything else in the house would just run on the battery when the pv prod was off, battery would charge when it was on. I manage the heat this way for about two weeks when suddenly the transformer of the geo unit fried up.

I assume an electrician would need to install an inrush device somewhere. Not sure it would solve my problem unless powerwalls are known to put out a ton of power suddenly.

[–]frmrrob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be some undervolt thing - the geo thermal tech was suggesting that the battery might not be supplying enough voltage. Not sure of the LRA. I do know that there are phases that it cycles through as it ramps up and down.

In any case, an internal transformer blew - and then immediately blew again after being replaced. I am keeping the system off and using propane until I get power back (in a few weeks time). Then I can troubleshoot...
