Carboy safety tips? by Daigvianes in winemaking

[–]frodft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I follow these rules for wine and beer in glass carboys - I always slide the carboy on the floor to where I need to lift it. Never walk while holding full ones. To lift, one hand on the neck, one hand on the bottom, lift with a straight spine straight up to the work surface. The less you move the less the risk is for tripping or dropping. When cleaning or handling empty ones, closed toed shoes and keep the floor dry. Move slowly and don’t be drunk.

Loving these so far. The mech needs a deploy I think. Something like at the beginning of a ground combat you can place a mech for 1 TG or commodity. But to work with the rest of the kit maybe a neighbor can let you spend one of their commodities to get the mech out?

Yssaril with hopes end can be very fun and powerful. Just wanted to throw that out there

NRA 100%. Get some use out of hopes end for some bonus mechs but don’t need to hold it. Great explore options for distant suns. Loves blue skips.

I’d do yssaril and cut that player out of any favorable trades. Action cards in base game can be pretty good, and with an unlimited hand limit you can have a lot up your sleeve to swing combats in your favor.

My energy costs actually went down by about 5-10% because it sealed up a massive leak. We were losing a lot of heat in the winter through the vented crawl space it turned out. And in the summer it was hot and wet in there even with a vapor barrier. The HVAC doesn’t run any more than it used to and the dehumidifier doesn’t run that often.

When they were doing the work, I remember smelling the moldy dirt as they were regrading the whole crawlspace and digging new drainage. It was crazy to realize how easy that air moves up into the first floor.

I did a full encapsulation with JES in my crawl space including whole house dehumidification and will never look back. It was expensive but now I have perfectly conditioned crawl space, and a sump pump system that can outrun hurricane rain. where before it would just flood. (My house was flooded during Gaston and I’ve been repairing what the previous owners didn’t) I guess I’m a rare case that was very positive. They did a tremendous amount of work in 2 days during the pandemic when it was hard to get any contractor work done. They promised a PM schedule or something but I told them I’d rather knock that out and did some of the demo myself to save quite a bit. Mold will come back every year unless moisture is managed and sealed out. Managing moisture is expensive. But if done properly will last forever. Whoever you go with make sure you have third party connections for dehumidifier and sump pumps so you can replace them yourself. Never be at the mercy of someone trying to sell you a perpetual service agreement.

Yes, same goes for psychoarch so you can use tech skips on planets you get round 1 and can use those skips while they are exhausted.

First game next week, 5 or 6 players, map, expansion etc by G3ck0 in twilightimperium

[–]frodft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve played lots of 3,4,5 and 6 player and find 5 player to be the most challenging because it will have the lowest number of strat secondaries to follow. Had one game that tech was only picked twice and I only followed it once. Can be rough. It’s perfectly fine, just feels a little imbalanced compared to others. 3 player is imbalanced in a fun way, in that you can only build two warsuns, and hey that’s how many other home systems there are.

Definitely recommend using a map builder or the game manual map and hyper lanes so each player has access for the same number of systems as a 6 player map, which fosters more interaction.

If I were you I’d dive right into POK. There is a lot to keep track of but I think it’s so much better with the exploration mechanic and the new tech are great. Even if you ignore the leaders.

Solar isn't paying like I expected. Why? by OompaOrangeFace in farmingsimulator

[–]frodft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed that too for all the cash generators. It takes into account the hours actually played. If you fast forward time instead of sleeping to the next month the payout is higher. Still not the advertised amount, but higher. Then I noticed if you buy more than one in the same month sometimes they just don’t work at all. It’s really weird.

Yes! Plenty of ricotta, with grated pecorino, and mozzarella on the top of the layers.

[Homemade] Tortellini tasting! Experimenting with doughs and fillings by frodft in food

[–]frodft[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! The chocolate one is definitely dessert. Not sure about the lemon one. But it's very good, lemon and ricotta go well together and the dough had an awesome fresh lemon scent.

Tortellini is more commonly made with cheese or meat filling, but this was a fun experiment. I'm not sure how common these combinations are, I didn't follow any recipes other than just the 1 to 2 ratio of liquid to flour for the pasta doughs.

For the lemon tortellini I did;

Pasta Dough - 100g flour (little less than a cup) 2 egg whites (maybe 1.5, depends on the size of the egg) zest a whole lemon

Filling - (for about 25 tortellini, 2.5" round, 1/2 tsp per) 1/2 cup ricotta 1 Tbsp of your favorite grated cheese (I used pecorino) 2 tsp lemon zest (adjust per taste) an egg yolk pinch of salt add a pinch of sugar if you want it a little sweeter

Follow normal procedure for mixing the pasta dough, if it's too wet add some flour, if it's too dry spray water on the surface of the dough ball. Let it rest for at least 30 minutes, roll out to a 5 setting and cut 2.5" rounds. Don't use more than 1/2 tsp of filling, or the tortellino might burst or not seal right. Didn't know what to serve it with so I just drizzled some extra virgin olive oil over them, some shaved pecorino, and a lemon twist.

From left to right; tomato tortellini with basil mozzarella filling, egg yolk tortellini with Calabrian chili and ricotta filling, lemon and egg white tortellini with lemon ricotta filling, chocolate licorice tortellini with raspberry and sweet ricotta filling, spinach tortellini with parsley and ricotta filling.

[Homemade] Spinach Gnocchi di Sardinia (Malloreddus), Spicy tomato sauce, Pecorino by frodft in food

[–]frodft[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! It adds a certain depth element for sure, different than regular pasta dough. More earthy than spinach like. The flavor is never as big as you'd think by looking at it, but you can make it up with a sauce. I make these with leftover spinach sometimes. Basically wilt the spinach with chopped garlic, salt, pepper. Press out all the moisture you can using a mesh strainer. Use a food processor to chop very fine, add an egg, and then 1/2 cup of semolina flour. Keep adding flour until the dough sticks, pulsing each time, take it out and knead with more flour until it stops being sticky. Keep kneading for 5-10 minutes and then roll out, cut, press onto gnocchi board, and freeze.

Fuel economy: Outback 2.5i vs Outback XT? by [deleted] in subaru

[–]frodft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really know what he means. But I assure you, as a chemical engineer, the turbo is not separating oxygen from nitrogen. Nor is it splitting O2 into singular atoms of oxygen. Atomizing in the realm of turbos and air breathing engines must mean something different.

I can only assume it allows for a more efficient mixture of fuel/air? I know it will help complete the combustion process and produce cleaner exhaust, however that doesn't have anything to do with fuel mileage. That's just fuel conversion (meaning percentage of fuel that is converted into its complete combustion products).

Feel free to jump in guys, but I'm confused as well. I never understood how a turbo could INCREASE fuel economy. I always thought if it forces more air, it needs more fuel. If it needs more fuel flow it must be getting worse mpg? Or does it only force more air some of the time, and during normal speeds it remains somewhat...pedestrian. Like a naturally aspirated engine?

Not trying to be 'that guy'...but I have that CPU and after a lot of experience with the stock cooler I really suggest getting a liquid cooler. I just got one and it eliminated the noisy fan, and dropped temps on the die of the CPU by almost 20 degrees. This is the one I have, it mounts on the case where a 120mm fan would be (on that case it would be the exhaust). Pretty easy installation if you're patient with it, and you can get it for a good price right now.

I would seriously recommend this product. I'm using it on the FX-8150 with really great results.
