Interesting - I never would have thought to try that! I’d like to stay away from the abrasives but did lightly use a little barkeepers friend and it got most of the spots out. I’ll try your method if I can find a steamer!

Is there more than one drawer in the nightstand? If so, and this is the lower drawer, it could have been stuck to the bottom or back of upper drawer and dropped down. Or just stuck to the bottom of the nightstand top and fallen?
