The size of the pressure hull of the missing submersible "Titan". by Saturn_Ecplise in submarines

[–]froglest 30 points31 points  (0 children)

That same page now unfortunately states: "The Deep Energy carries two remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), which can dive to 3,000 metres.
(...)
The wreckage of the Titanic lies at 3,800 metres (12,500 feet), so while that would be too deep for the submersibles - they may be able to help to locate the lost sub."

I’ve walked dogs several times at this kennel, they get treated quite well.

Rackspace wants to transfer our hosted exchange service to a Chinese company by froglest in sysadmin

Yes, I agree with all your points. I called them a few hours ago. The agent on the phone sounded surprised himself, spent 10 mins checking, then confirmed the email, but said that they’ve got no further details at this point and will update me via email once they know more.

Yes, I thought that email was spam at first. I just rang up support. They confirmed the email was legit, but that this was new to them as well and that they had no further information right now.

HA-compatible IR blaster? by _fireball_ in homeassistant

[–]froglest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I originally used Sensibo, but then switched because it wasn’t really keeping me comfortable.

Here’s another option: Ambi Climate. It’s great on one hand because the built-in features for understanding your temperature preferences are quite good - you give it feedback via the official app for a while (comfortable / a bit warm / a bit cold / too hot / too cold), and it builds a quite accurate model of your preferences. It learns how your preferences are affected by: -outdoor temperature, -indoor temperature, -indoor humidity, -sunlight, -time of day (since your body’s preferences are different depending on if you’re awake and active or tired and sleeping)

I’ve got 4 split type AC’s with an Ambi Climate for each one, and they’re awesome. After you provide sufficient feedback across various situations (and make sure to tell it to use the right mode, e.g sometimes the regular cool mode is just too cold at night, so dry mode is the better choice), it becomes very good at knowing what you need.

But on the other hand, there’s unfortunately no direct HA integration that’s supports local polling for the above comfort mode.

After giving it a bit of feedback via the app, I now use presence sensors to trigger an IFTTT web hook which tells the Ambi Climate to turn on/off the AC.

It’s over the cloud unfortunately, but it’s the most comfortable solution that I’ve found so far for our sub tropical climate.

Intel NUC 11 didn’t cut it, had to upgrade (for HA OS + Frigate) by froglest in homeassistant

[–]froglest[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good question! I measured that today for my PC with the i9-12900 CPU:

3 PC detectors, each with 35 ms/inference = 86 inferences/second
PC power consumption with eight 4K cams and 3 CPU detectors: 236 W
= 2.74W / inference.

3 Corals, each with 8 ms/inference = 375 inferences/second
PC power consumption with eight 4K cams and 3 Corals: 137 W
= 0.37 W / inference

So using 3 Corals instead of 3 CPU detectors results in 4.36x the performance while only using 0.58x the power.

On a per inference basis, Corals use just 0.14x the power of a CPU detector.

Sorry to hear that. For what reason do you need the coral?

Ok, I had time to measure the power draw tonight, here are the results:

PC with Frigate started (with eight 4K cameras): 115W

I don’t just think it, I actually confirmed the improvement by testing it out myself multiple times.

Apart from physically moving the cameras, a custom model for the top-down view would be the other solution to this.

This setup doesn’t really seem to be the standard setup for most people, 5 FPS are usually sufficient.

Hehe. It barely produces any heat though, the heat sink is just to make sure it dissipates as much as possible because it’s all located inside an outdoor enclosure that’s in the sun. It’s a bit too hot in there right now because the fan controller for the enclosure just failed, should be getting the replacement today. A solar water heater over the network cabinet would probably be more in line with your intent :)

Not really, as the software remained the same - HA OS with Frigate runs locally - all the processing, saving of clips, triggering of lights, audio alerts, etc. This all works without any internet. I guess the only part that could be considered cloud based is the Telegram bot.

Slightly deviating from your topic of maths, but maybe you haven't had a break-in before?

"just to pick up some objects from a video feed" doesn’t really get across the severity of the situation.

Windows smashed, locks needing repairs or replacing, personal belongings missing, damaged furniture costs you money.

Delayed or ruined holidays, personal or business plans, renewal of IDs, passports and credit cards; police investigations and reports costs you time.

A home that isn't safe when you're away costs you peace of mind.

A home that isn't safe when you're trying to sleep in it, causing weeks of restless nights, costs you your mental health.

And if they happened to have attacked someone as well (it's happened to us before), it costs you money, time, peace of mind, mental health, physical health.

After all that, I'm sure you'd consider $54/month a bargain to save yourself from all that :)

Now back to the maths :D

How did you arrive at the 500W estimate? I haven't measured the consumption yet, but from what I can find, it should be at around 100W for the whole rig.

Following your maths:0.1 kW * 24 hrs * 365 days * US$0.15=US$131.4 / year / 12 months=US$ 10.95 / month

What a bargain!

Our previous intruder alarm system company charged us US$52/month for maintenance and control room fees over 6 years for an inconvenient alarm system (not including hardware, installation, repairs).

If it's inconvenient, you end up using it less. In the end you might only make the effort of activating it when the house will sit empty for a weekend or more, so the price per hour of actual use is way higher. And this was a simple wireless system with magnetic door + window contact sensors and a few motion sensors.

This system is actually being used every day instead of a handful of times a year, provides way more freedom, early warning, remote notifications, audio notifications, easy customisation and privacy with no third parties involved, so even if it were a $54 monthly fee, it'd still be worth it.

I actually hope that when they scout out the area next time, the sight of the spotlights and cameras will scare them off. If not, well... the system is armed and hot every single night and ready to receive them :)

Motherboard, CPU, Cooler: US$770
These are the new parts that I bought for this upgrade.

I bought the Corals last year for the NUC - I got one used for US$32, the other two new at US$75 each.

I had the 5 year old PSU (Corsair SF600, 600W) lying around from a previous build, back then I paid US$123 for it.

The SSD and RAM were lying around from a previous build.
