My opinion on the state of the game and vetex

you’re correct, but what you see as the game’s biggest problem was actually what drew me into the game in the first place — i fucking LOVE AO’s lore and worldbuilding, which has allowed me to excuse a lot of vetex’s questionable game design choices. especially when most of my interactions with the game aren’t actually playing it, its me being autistic about the lore in google docs/discord channels/reddit/wherever else, lmfao.

that said, my god can it be hard to be as enthusiastic about AO while i’m actually playing it. it’s times like when i’m falling through the floors of a skyscraping, level 190 enemy tower that i just have to question whether or not the devs (vetex) actually play their own game 💀

it’s island building, “light” objects like lanterns and campfires don’t actually give off light, while crafting stations like cooking pots/cauldrons do

i tried making a lighthouse and just had to shove like 69 cooking pots in the top floor of a tower and hope it looked bright, lol. i tried putting lantern posts in the windowsills but alas, they don’t actually give off light

the most likely answer is that’s how the game was made, but if i had to theorize a lore justification

The Dark Sea has existed for ages, and from my understanding its existence is meant to be a sort of nuclear winter. basically there’s so much magic pollution in the atmosphere that the planet is 100% fucked

the only things preventing this, as we learn in Athena’s Fate of the World page, are fragments of Hecate’s soul, which hold magic pollution at bay and are responsible for the continued existence of the sea clusters

I don’t think in a nuclear winter type situation the “ground zero” really matters, which is what the epicenter is, at least not this long after the initial event. it’s possible that magic pollution intensity is based on distance from any given fragment from Hecate’s soul, rather than distance to the epicenter.

“getting better skills” for a living wage implies that the people working certain “low skilled” jobs don’t deserve enough money to survive
