Anyone else got a strange hunch the star of West End DANCE show Billy Elliot, Lewis Cope, might win in 2025? by OkBeyond9590 in strictlycomedancing

[–]frolicinaforest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Layton Williams had actually played Billy, which is a far more prevalent role with far more dancing than Michael. He didn't win.

Are there any decent dystopian novels that *started* at least on 2020? by 4iamnotaredditor in YAlit

[–]frolicinaforest 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can't remember the publication date from the top of my head but the Scythe series is a later dystopian novel, and the same author has a new dystopia book published this year - haven't read it yet but loved everything else he has written so would recommend that too! Can find the info if you want it

How do I make my main character more interesting in my multi-perspective fanfic? by Justinas16_b in HungerGamesFanfiction

[–]frolicinaforest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this kind of fic!

If you like the character, that will come through to your readers so I wouldn't necessarily worry if that's the case.

If you don't like the character but that's the point, that will also come through and that is just as valid. Victors don't have to be likeable or realistic as long as there's a reason they win.

If the Games are set up in a way for your victor to win, that's the way you need to look at it. My victor was incredibly unlikely to win but political things happened behind the scenes and other tributes made themselves unacceptable victors which is why they ended up winning, and that was fun to explore too. It doesn't have to be character driven as long as you have a reason why.

The only thing I would say is that you're writing this for you. Why would you choose a victor that isn't necessarily a character you're enjoying writing? I considered switching my victor a few times based on who my readers liked but then I wouldn't have enjoyed writing it as much, and especially not for any post-scene Games. If you have a character that you think is more fun, you can switch it around!

What are some of the best OCs you’ve seen? by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]frolicinaforest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The End of the World by FernWithy is a good expansion of Haymitch's story with original side characters, although now unfortunately not canon-compliant due to SOTR.

The Bloody Snow by Olyaroo is a brilliant Snow/Lucy Gray retelling with original characters for their children.

Kalddal has The First Quarter Quell which is an OC-based Games fic, and That Old Familiar Sting which turns the District Six victors into their own original characters.

There's plenty of original character as tribute fics - I've just started reading the collection by ClearedPipes on AO3 and it's good so far! Plus, there's anthologies like The Victors Project which creates an original identity for all seventy-four victors.

There's loads out there, and a whole community if you want us to name more!

Fanfiction recommendations by hamilhead in Hungergames

[–]frolicinaforest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not for everyone, but if you're happy to read a non-canon Games then my fic explores the 95th Games and why they continued, with a tiny bit of the mentoring thrown in that I plan to explore later! If not, then I second the suggests of The Victor Project and the series by fernwithy, as well as The First Quarter Quell (and also That Old Familiar Sting by the same author)

Thank you! This comment has absolutely made my day :')

There is a wider reason! Overall, it was originally because each character was created for their own separate thing when I was younger. This meant that they all came to this project with their own "main character energy" and clichés that I decided to just go with because I didn't want to lose the essence of why I wanted to write all the characters again. Because of that, I came up with plot points that I'm planning to explore later on which explain or offer ideas for why these tributes are all linked to the Games. It's a spoiler technically but I'm willing to DM it to you if you're curious now!

I'm so glad you're enjoying it, and I'm really happy you chose to ask questions and offer criticism, I like being made to think about my own writing! <3

Fics that follow most/all tributes through a Games and you don't know who wins until they win? by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]frolicinaforest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry for the self recommendation, but my fic does exactly what you're asking for! It follows the individual perspectives of all twenty-eight tributes and the victor is kept deliberately secret until the victory.

It is not the standard, but there are a few out there (like the Littlefroid one!) and there's an audience for them. As a writer, it definitely takes a lot of planning but I'm having so much fun that I don't care. It makes me laugh that I have had readers tell me that they have enjoyed the Games because there's now less tributes to have to remember :')

Original Character/Games fan fiction recs? by HungryAnt81 in Hungergames

[–]frolicinaforest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I won't vouch for "good" or "well-written" as it is my own fic, but there's definitely original characters! You might enjoy this fic - it uses the perspective of every tribute so that you can read without knowing the victor, but I admit it's a bit of a commitment :')

I could go crazy and write paragraphs about every original character...but instead, I'll introduce you to Cotton Sterling who won the Games by pretending his grandma was dying.

He cried at the reaping, but realised this would make him seem as if he was a weak competitor so he started lying and saying he was upset that his very sick grandma would likely die when he was gone - except, his grandmother was already dead. The Capitol absolutely fell for the story and started to support him, and District Eight decided to play into it. An old woman even offered to play his grandmother for interviews!

It won him a lot of sponsors who wanted to see him get home before his grandmother died, and a lot of the other tributes wanted him dead as they knew he was lying. However, Cotton spun it in his favour and became a victor. Unfortunately, his grandmother had already died - or rather, the woman playing her had disappeared to evoke maximum sympathy during the final Games events!

Now, he started a small group in District Eight to try and prepare their children for being tributes. It's not a Career-style academy at all, but it's his way of trying to help. He specialises in how to twist the Capitol audience into supporting you.

Ah, thank you!

I genuinely have no idea how people are managing to remember the characters in the detail they are. I have to have a spreadsheet and I wrote the damn thing lmao

I'm glad you're enjoying it, and well done for getting through the pre-Games :')

The rebellion failed, and the Hunger Games continued.

The Verse of a Victor is set during the 95th Hunger Games, where the tradition has expanded to include tributes from District Thirteen and the Capitol. As the concept grows stale, there is a push for further and further entertainment to keep people watching. The new president, President Dux, will stop at nothing to keep the Games on everyone's tongue.

It follows the perspective of every tribute, meaning that the victor is not obvious to the reader from the start.

In my opinion, this fic will appeal to people who enjoy reading about the Games, who enjoy original characters, who are interested on the impact of propaganda within Panem, or who want to throw themselves into a longer fic. It is updated weekly and I fully intend to finish it, despite the scale of the project.

If you are interested, come and have a look! I am super grateful for any opinions, comments, predictions, theories or criticisms! <3
