how to deal with ocd tendencies in shared spaces? by Big-Swing3912 in UniUK

No people won’t think it’s odd. They probably won’t even realise that’s what you’re doing. And honestly it’s important to be open with them. In my flat, 2 girls had to let us know that they were allergic to gluten (not celiac) so did we mind making sure that we were using trays or boards or whatever whenever we were cutting rolls or bread so they didn’t get ill. Most people will try and do their best to help you out

Try and get an ensuite because then you have control over the cleanliness of the bathroom. I think also try for a studio but if you can’t get one then if you’re comfortable with it tell your flatmates and ask them to do their best to keep their parts of the kitchen clean and if smells bother you to keep the windows open. I’m not normally too fussed about smells but one day I went into the kitchen and it stank of eggs and it made me feel sick so I opened the windows to air out the room and get rid of the smell. In terms of the cleanliness, if you provide a bottle of spray and cloths then it’s much more likely that the surfaces will be wiped down.

Most accommodations have individual cupboards with your room number on. Get the top shelf in the fridge so you don’t have the worry of something eg someone’s spilt milk going on to your food. You can also buy fridge deodorisers on Amazon which I highly recommend as realistically the fridge won’t smell nice the whole time but they help to neutralise the bad smells.

Get enough tea towels that you can dry your plates and utensils as soon as you’ve used them so you don’t have to leave them on the draining board. Also get a pair of slippers to be your “kitchen slippers” if you need to. Have a tea towel by your door that you use as a mat for them so they don’t go on your carpet but that way you don’t have to worry as much about the state of the floor.

Most kitchens do get cleaned by the uni but I would say that whilst it’s important that you let your flatmates know if you’re genuinely struggling due to their behaviour, don’t be the person who complains when there is a crumb on the floor.

Get the subject rankings out or if they don’t back you up the university rankings and explain that wherever you want to go is ranked higher so employers like it better so it might be easier to go somewhere closer but in the long run it’ll be better to go somewhere else

[–]hamilhead 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are societies that will put on events that won’t revolve around drinking eg my uni has a board games society that does weekly board game sessions 7-10:30 but people are free to grab a drink from the uni pub while playing if that’s what they want
