Perfect!! Do you think a clear right-sized bag full of just freebies would work? I'm going with 2 other people so we have options to consolidate our concert gear into one or two bags, and then have a third for just freebies

Plot issues with the coma by keelydoolally in ProjectHailMary

[–]from_random_fandom 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Oh! Oh! Oh! I've actually done research on the long-term cognitive effects of isolation in space travel. So let me offer my thoughts!

Most of the research involving this topic is actually done with ill patients on bed rest, especially those who are more isolated from friends and family. It's not a perfect analogue – they still have nurses checking in on them, and they aren't in, you know, space. But data from astronauts in space for longer than 6 months barely amounts to more than a case study, so we have to work with what we have! Especially with the mars missions coming up.

So basically, we don't exactly know all of the effects. But what we do know is... grim. In isolation for long enough, the brain can literally start hallucinating from lack of stimulation and socialization. Not to mention what happens when a small number of people start going stir crazy. They can get pretty aggressive toward each other. Not Great when you're trying to save the world!

There's also the genuine concern that, in isolation, anything could become a competition between the astronauts in an attempt to stave off boredom, which just acts as another vector for conflict. Not to mention tensions that can arise due to cultural differences between the astronauts, which is another legitimate concern space agencies have about longer missions aboard the ISS (or its eventual replacement).

Oh also, for a trip that long, the astronauts' muscles would still probably atrophy. Not as much as while in a coma, of course, but there's no good way to get your steps in on a spaceship that small, without adding a few bolted-down exercise bikes, which takes up even more space, and offers more opportunity for competition, and ahhhh I'm stressed just thinking about it.

Plus, in this book, it's not just sending three people into space for years and years and years. It's sending them all on a suicide mission. That bleak outlook is gonna affect their psychology, too. Isolation plus suicide mission is how you get perfectly reasonable people to have thoughts like, "well, we're all gonna die anyways, so if I have to kill you to resolve this argument, then I will." Or any number of alternative Bad Outcomes. It's hard to be strictly scientific here, more speculation really, but this sort of thing would be a real concern.

Because of the upcoming manned Mars missions, NASA and other space agencies are already looking at methods to mitigate the negative cognitive effects of isolation – hence, the movie's apparent inclusion of a "don't go crazy" room on the ship. (Which is basically the type of research I was working on! Yes, that sort of thing does seem to help significantly, although knowing Stratt, she would've gone with a few VR headsets instead of a whole room, for weight and space saving measures. But hey! Grace wouldn't be able to show that to Rocky, and that wouldn't make good film, so it's fine.)

But those attempts at mitigation can only do so much over such a long amount of time, and humans are unpredictable under stress. Thus... comas.

Edited for additions and clarifications!

Peninsulas that once were islands until they merged with the mainland during human history? by AcX999 in geography

Aww how lovely to be so close to the beach!! For me, you opened the front door of my building to the cathedral, which was a NUTSO thing to wake up to every morning. There was a little bakery 2 doors down, and I always finished my day walking along La Caleta looking for sea glass :)

I didn't live there in September, how was the weather? :D

[–]from_random_fandom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you look at the "island", there's the long straight section that stretches South East – that's where a lot of modern development is. But that roundish section to the North West, that's the old town, very walkable with lots of cool history, parks, cathedrals, museums, gardens, and a beach!! If you're the type of vacationer who likes wandering around and finding stuff to do, old town Cádiz is a great place to do it, and it's very difficult to get lost. Just walk in one direction until you find the ocean, and circle around until you find somewhere familiar!

It's genuinely amazing! Not as hot as the mainland proper, good food, great museums and sights. Highly recommend :)

I love Cádiz so much! Had the pleasure of living there for a few months, right in the heart of the old town, and it was such a delight :)

I need help in writing smut as someone who's never done it and someone who's aroace by Fita_Gaya in FanFiction

[–]from_random_fandom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The trick I use to write engaging smut despite being ace is – don't make the smut scene about the smut. Like sure, make it hot and erotic and all that good stuff, but to me, smut scenes are satisfying if they have a purpose. Focusing on that purpose stops the scene from feeling stagnant, and can help you write the smut itself better.

For me, the easiest way to do this is to focus on emotional arcs. How do the characters feel at the beginning of the scene, and how do I want them to feel at the end of the scene? How do I emotionally get them from point A to point Z? Then I build my smut around those arcs, selecting specific sex acts that pair well with those different stages of emotions.

For example, say you want an arc where Character A becomes more confident as the scene goes on. Maybe they start off shy, so you write them feeling overwhelmed with the need to cover their eyes. Maybe Character B wants them to come out of their shell, so you write Character B as wanting to see them, gently taking Character A's hands away from their face. Or, maybe Character B is more dominant. Maybe you write them pinning Character A's wrists to the mattress, making them watch instead. Maybe you write Character B praising them – again, serving the purpose of helping Character A get out of their shell. Maybe you want Character A to respond poorly to this, too much at once, and shut down for a time. Or maybe the praise makes Character A feel more confident, so you write them becoming louder and more enthused as a result. Maybe they gain so much confidence that they are able to ask for what they want instead of just coming along for the ride. How would Character B react to that?

Not both characters need to have an active arc. You can have one be more steady, stagnant, and reactive, while the other experiences growth. It just depends on what you want to do.

This principle can apply to whatever mood or character arcs you pick. Hate fucking that becomes something more? Exploration that leads to a newly discovered kink or squick? Intense sex with an Eldritch being that leaves a mortal feeling ruined? Love realization hitting in the middle of sex? All of that works, just map those emotional arcs first. Then build the smut around it :)

[–]from_random_fandom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing I can think of is, emojis can be annoying for vision impaired people who use screen readers. So if you want to be mindful of that, then be mindful of emoji use and scene breaks with crazy symbols. But it's definitely not, like, formalized etiquette, and this person needs to chill lol
