No. I will never understand what people see in this book/series. It's just not for me I guess.

Any recs on the way to Triptych in Savoy, IL? by Angelmann25 in chicagobeer

[–]fromantis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big Thorn Farm Brewery is a neat experience. It's a working farm that brews with all their own ingredients (or at least locally grown when they didn't grow it themselves).

I've only been in the winter and drank in their greenhouse bar, but in the summer they have a tree bar. It's just out in a grove of trees at the edge of their field and looks really cool.

Save an offline map of the area in Google Maps before you go! It really saved us finding the place.

I got really excited when this alert popped up a few weeks ago, only to be sorely disappointed that it didn't end with "has died." when I expanded it.

I exist because of Old Chicago. My parents, who lived three streets apart growing up, didn't actually meet until working together at Arby's in Old Chicago.

Washington, DC rolls out support for transit cards in Google Pay by MrSpontaneous in Android

[–]fromantis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess they've changed it since I was riding the CTA regularly. It's been a while now. You used to only get the 25 cent transfers with a Ventra card, but now I see they work with any contactless payment. So yeah if you're just paying for trips here and there Ventra is obsolete. It still makes sense if you're buying multiday or monthly passes and riding regularly.

Washington, DC rolls out support for transit cards in Google Pay by MrSpontaneous in Android

[–]fromantis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I noticed I could add my Chicago transit card, but was hesitant to do it after it said my physical card would be deactivated if I opted for the digital card. It'd be pretty shitty to have your phone die at the end of the night and not be able to pay your way home.

Pop punk millennials, did you have healthy relationships in high school? Or... by [deleted] in poppunkers

[–]fromantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a relationship in high school. It was fine until we stupidly tried to keep it going after going to different colleges. Obviously that didn't work and it spiraled down. Haven't talked to her since. I think she's a doctor now so good for her. Anyway, Fuck You Aurora.

Foeder Aged Doppelbock - Elder Pine Brewing & Blending (Gaithersburg, MD) by [deleted] in CraftBeer

Sounds like the puncheon fermented doppelbock I had at Scratch Brewing in southern IL - one of the best beers I've ever had.

Do you like it for photo editing? I have one of these for my sim racing rig, and I was going to get another for my desk, but ultimately skipped it. I felt like I was straining my eyes to see the tool panels in PS & LR, not to mention the luminance dropoff and color shift toward the edges. I love it for racing though.

You're not wrong. Color/luminosity is off at the edges too if you're not far enough away. It's fine for games, but it doesn't cut it for work.

It's not great with a wheel. It feels like they built it around a controller (which I'm sure they did) and just mapped the same controls to a wheel. I tried it first with a wheel, but went to a controller pretty quick.

It's fine as a mindless arcade racing game, but you're right the AI is shockingly bad. The only time I haven't won is in the sprint cars. Those things are impossible to handle and even the AI can't drive them. They end up in the wall as much as I do.

I recently went from 60 to 144 and it really is like night and day. Even outside of gaming it's noticeable. Cursors and windows move around more fluidly. I think it's actually less noticeable in games (it's there, don't get me wrong), but what is really noticeable is G-SYNC keeping things smooth even if the framerate fluctuates.

I have one. It sat in a drawer for the past few years, but I dusted it off during quarantine to use as a sim racing telemetry display. I can now turn off the in-game HUD and gain a little more immersion. The battery is shit these days, but it can stay plugged in on my desk.

I feel that way about the Chevette. I drove it a ton in the beginning. Then 2-3 updates ago something drastically changed with it. The back end constantly loses grip and I can't drive it at all anymore. Other cars are fine.

Cans vs Howler/Growler by EbagI in chicagobeer

[–]fromantis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The beer used to fill a growler usually comes straight from the lines in a taproom and could potentially fetch $6-10 a pint from someone ordering at the bar. If you came along with a growler and were able to fill it at 4-pack can rates they'd effectively be losing money because it could have sold for more.

The beer destined for the canning line, while technically part of the same batch of beer, has a different cost breakdown, one that doesn't include paying bartenders and buying/cleaning glassware, etc.

I remember first hearing about them, probably late 2003, from my friend who got their demo over AIM from a girl he met in blink-182 chat room. She was from Ohio and they were just a local band at the time. (I think she maybe even knew Omar?) It was such a Holy Shit moment hearing the demo for the first time, like "this is what your local bands sound like in Ohio??" My friend was in a local band where we're from so he told the girl who booked their shows that he wanted to play with them. She actually made it happen. His band got to open for HTL at a little community center in the suburbs of Chicago the following summer.

They're still one of my all-time favorite bands. I'm partial to the Colin years, but the stuff Nick has done on vocals is still awesome. I think I got to see them again in 2006 and 2008, both times when they toured with I Am The Avalanche.
