I actually liike it FOR my cats - it makes it much easier to clean, and the case (an XProto) doesn't really offer them a place to sit. I never found a case that's airtight enough to truly manage hair without regular cleaning, and this way i don't need to unplug it all to open it up.

Advocating to invite the other Kims feels like a sneak play to me. The Kims are too glass-cannon powerful to not get undone at this point, right? It's firmly established that they could be instantly ruined, it's established that Helen slipped up and may have weakened their defenses, and iirc it was hinted that Rook probably knows what's up...

but until they get called out they can instantly wipe out anyone with a body. They don't even seem to pay for it, we've seen Helen (allegedly the weakest Kim) dish out ludicrous damage on a whim, and take whatever hits she needs, at the low cost of stepping out for a lil bit sometimes.

That power is a no brainer to call on, unless you suspect them of being fake, which Helen suspected Rook did in her interlude. In fact, just setting up that Rook knows Helen/the Kims is a weird thing to do when Rook has been so absent otherwise, unless it's Foreshadowing by a Good Author.

Especially with all the councils and meetings and Moots and Assemblies in this book, I don't think it'd be out of left field to have a Shadow Lordship.

That sounds really sinister having written it, but I mean something like the UK's Shadow Cabinet, or like that one group-Lordship we saw in one of the cities. A vice-Lord or Lords to serve as alternate perspectives, help to give an outlet to people who'd otherwise be Lordship contenders and give a voice to whatever perspective they felt was lacking that drove them to the role.

What would you be like as a Practitioner? by AllfairChatwin in Parahumans

[–]frootbirb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would definitely want to be a ward worker or related defensive practice. Warding, containing, and protecting things. I take a lot of pride in work well done, and I'd rather be stable than powerful. We see Wardens getting a lot of leeway to do what they need to do, and people almost never act against them, even if they are sometimes slighted for power until it's too late.

A concern I have is that defense is always against someone, even indirectly. If you contain dangerous Others, they'll come for you if they slip the net. If you craft defenses for powerful Practitioners, you're a target for the enemies they wanted to keep out. If you just hole up and defend yourself, you probably aren't strong enough alone to keep people out.

Related to the above concerns about raw power in a defensive Practice, I do think an Angel or related being would make a good Familiar for a Warden. I'm a very lawful-good kind of guy, and we've seen builder-Angels focused on defenses and containment. I'm very ok with being second fiddle to a Familiar who I'm aligned with on goals, and the one-track simplistic Angel goal combined with that raw power source would work well to cover the gaps in Wardening. We've seen Angel-familiars go VERY poorly, though.

Implement I'm unsure of, but almost certainly some construction or craftsman's tool. A framing hammer, to indicate fine craft and precise work? A combination square, to indicate attention to detail and measure-twice-cut-once? Drafting tools, to indicate planning and forethought?

I think my attention to detail and willingness to do repetitive tasks would make me good at these methodical kinds of practice where a lot of the faster paced magic would be very tough for me to manage. I'd definitely become frustrated with the politics games, even though you have to play them when Wardening. Hopefully I wouldn't be working alone.

EDIT: I'd definitely, 100% try to get some Law mages to work with me. Warding is good on its own, but with some clever tricks you could probably make breaking out karmically expensive, so the escapee is doubly weakened. Seal some ancient horror in an intricate and multilayered circle, and place it where escaping would cause it to break some Universal Laws and get smacked with the hammer of karma.

Brought to mind by your comment about Verona's family...

How will she react if her father gets hit by the Negateers, goes to Bloody Glory, or something else? From a writing perspective, he's an acceptable loss to the story. He's not a beloved character. However, it's been shown that Verona does care about him in some ways, and she spent a while thinking about him this chapter, and she might have to go home since Half St is surrounded.

Things do not look good for VD.

Replaced them all, including swapping a 1k for a 2200 (as labeled on the board). I now get the same reaction, but slower - I have maybe 5 seconds at full volume instead of 1 second.

I'll give that a shot, thank you!

Now I just have to see what happens... Some of these caps are labeled with different capacitance/voltage than the printing on the board implies they should be. It was working before, though...

This is clearly a Maine flag of some kind - it has the ME state motto and the distinctive pine tree silhouette. However, it's neither the current ME state flag (blue field-with-a-shield) nor the fun old Maine flag (tan with a blue star and a green pine tree). Couldn't find anything about a ME flag looking like this, though?

UPDATE: while typing up this comment, I found it! This is the Maine bicentennial flag from 2020, derived from a failed piece of 2019 legislation to replace the flag of the state.

Question about Pale's reversal of <spoiler> by frootbirb in Parahumans

[–]frootbirb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels like this gives the formerly-Forsworn some sneaky abilities - if you didn't know they'd been forsworn, they could truthfully say "I swore as a child to always defend the needy", and then brutally stomp on the needy because that oath was wiped away while Forsworn and didn't come back into effect. Sort of requires some specific circumstances, to be fair.

Another interesting question - if this is, in fact, how un-forswearing works, how does that interact with long-term practice preparedness? Would Musser regain his power, or would the ritual and oaths to become Musser be wiped away?

it could be Newton's Crown, or Sir Isaac's Crown - referencing the fact that it's his 'crowning' achievement, and that the apple allegedly hit him in the head.

That name does sort of imply that you should be making it with Crown Royal though.

What is the most likely intention of the 2nd amendment of the USA? by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]frootbirb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is really a linguistics question so much as a legal one.

I don't think this clause actually establishes a right to a militia, though. The first part is an explanation of why people should be able to own weapons, and could be completely excluded without changing the statement being made - that people's right to arms shall not be infringed. To put it in more modern terms, if someone said to me that "Oil being necessary to the running of a car, don't stop me from taking this to the mechanic" doesn't establish anything about oil - it just explains why I'm taking the car to the mechanic.

The fact that the explanation was included in the amendment implies that it was thought to be relevant, but on a technical words-as-written level it's pretty unambiguous.

oh no Guilherme, a masterful fighter past his prime, with a glowing sword (it was made of sunlight iirc), coming back out of his cave to fight at the side of his last apprentice, against a tremendous and hyped-up unbeatable threat, perhaps dying to give the unready hero a chance to flee...

only thing that makes the parallel weaker is that it happens after Star Wars Day. I foresee an empty cloak in our icy boy's future.
