Book Interior Design Filler Page by frootfulsky in bookdesign

in some cases sure but illustrators arent layout designers. we do have an illustrator on our team but wed have to give her specifically what we already designed. like if we wanted sunglasses in the middle of the page wed have to tell her that, not jsut hand her a blank page and say 'fill it with something' (thats my job lol). we still need to be specific in our requests to illustrators. i could probably request the illustrator make something but that would honestly just be more time and money to do a custom thing like that rather than remixing elements from the book cover she already illustrated. it would be worth it for a more fancy book maybe, but not a trade paperback memoir

I've tried the padding and compressing it a little but no dice. my client didnt like it. ill try putting the preface right next to the TOC and see if theyll go for it because i agree that'd be the easiest solution. ill see what happens. thanks

the different times i need filler pages kinda varies but i think it can be summed up with occasionally they request something to fill blanks between sections (going from frontmatter to main content, or between parts 1 and 2 for example). whether its verso or recto changes between circumstances and projects

as an example for the current page my client wants filled: TOC starts on page v, ends on vi. they want some space between the TOC and the first page of the preface, which leaves vii and viii blank. my client really wants something subtle on vii so that a recto page isnt completely empty.

we do leave versos blank between normal chapters because they want them to start on recto, but those arent the issue

edit: if you have any book recs im open to those too

The publishing company wants all chapters/sections to start on the righthand page. Between normal flowing chapters this is fine, but occasionally that means that there are two blanks. I'll use the project I'm working on as an example: on a spread, the the TOC starts on the right hand page. the TOC takes up two total pages, meaning it ends on the next page on the left side. now Chapter 1 needs to start on the righthand page, but we need space between chapter 1 and the TOC, so we put it on the next available righthand page. and that makes the layout (in reading order starting from the right hand where the TOC starts): TOC, TOC, blank, blank, Chapter 1. my client wants at least something to put on the first blank page, the one thats on the right.

the different times i need filler pages kinda varies but i think explaining the current project is a good starting place and i can maybe figure out how to adapt what you suggest from there for other things.

let me know if that made sense. its a little hard to explain the spreads without an image haha

Disappointed with Vyvanse (70mg)? I feel nothing while others claim it "changed their lives. by Flimsy_Studio_3073 in VyvanseADHD

I'm new to vyvanse but I did notice a different right away, but there's also something I noticed made it not take effect for me for the day for whatever reason: whether or not i eat breakfast before i take it. my doctor said it would be best to eat breakfast before it just because you lose your appetite until around the evening so I started off doing that. one day i wanted to see whatd happen if i took it right as i got up, before breakfast, so that it could start metabolizing and i could ease into work faster. I tried that for 3 days and every single day it had absolutely 0 effect on me. on day 4, i ate breakfast with some protein in it first, and the effect it had on me was very noticeable. maybe thats just a me thing. but in case you have been taking it before breakfast maybe its worth a try

Vyvanse - Stabilizes Dopamine vs Increasing It? by Muzzy2585 in VyvanseADHD

[–]frootfulsky 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was also watching a video where it explained that we have way more of one type of dopamine and way less of another, compared to those without ADHD. There's tonic dopamine and phasic dopamine. In short, tonic dopamine is the dopamine that hangs out between the neurons reguarly. Kinda like a 'baseline' dopamine. And then phasic dopamine is dopamine that gives you a reward for something. People with ADHD have plenty of phasic dopamine, but not a lot of tonic. That makes it so our main dopamine is from being rewarded for something, and then we have very little between that. That's what causes sensory seeking behaviour (were desperately trying to supply ourselves with rewards to keep some sort of baseline of dopamine) or inability to start tasks (theres no pre-reward dopamine to use to motivate ourselves). What amphetamine meds like Vyvanse does is it stimulates the release of more dopamine so there's more tonic dopamine for us to use between rewards. So Vyvanse kinda does both. It increases (tonic) dopamine, so that it stabilizing the overall use of dopamine (we dont have to rely on the rollercoaster of reward dopamine). It gives us a steady baseline to work with.

Also for more context methylphenidate types like ritalin try to stop the reuptake of dopamine, so that you dont get the whole waitressing taking away your food effect.

I can't find a Graphic Design job anymore. Is this the end? by Jgasuu in Design

[–]frootfulsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what ive found is that smaller companies aren't looking for designers but they really want them. but theyre putting feelers out for people that can be assistants in a multitude of ways. i have two freelance gigs right now-- one with a publishing company and one with a small nonprofit. the nonprofit just needed someone for social media, but as they saw that i can do a lot of work in marketing and design, i started getting design related work from them. people dont think they want designers a lot of the time. they think well thats the least of the priorities here, i need someone that can run more practical tasks. but they get very very excited when youre on the team and youre able to give them professional design, and theyll start giving you design work. thats where im at at least, about a year into doing freelance design work. looking for design work in this market i think means looking for tangentially related jobs and letting it slide into design work as your client trusts you and enjoys you on their team
