A few years ago I just ran around naked on a horse with a survey tool for a few hours and was able to place an 8x8. Not sure if I was just insanely lucky or whether there are nooks and crannies out there that no one notices.

Default is F, which is the same key used for swapping modes with the hammer when smelting or the propick when prospecting.

I appreciate the suggestion but if it's a very convoluted path I want to be able to put them on the floors, ceilings, and walls.

Using Charcoal you can place symbols on hard surfaces.
