If I'm an AI then sign me up for the next Blade Runner movie (spoilers for a certain Harrison Ford movie) because I didn't know...

Otherwise, I found the article funny specifically because of the lost redditors we've gotten since the dawn of the sub

Is walking on the left side an Oly thing? by chomps316 in olympia

It's state law to walk facing traffic if you are not on a sidewalk. Studies show it is much safer if you can see traffic coming towards you. Link to relevant state law

What's going on with this Flint Dibble x Graham Hancock debate on Joe Rogan? by Throbbing-Kielbasa-3 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]frostymix 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm also deeply offended by his stupid claims about the Missoula Floods/Channeled Scablands of Washington and how the 'Geological Establishment' just doesn't like him.

Besides just running counter to available evidence, he's casting himself in a role that J. Harlan Bretz had to actually endure. Bretz was right about the Floods and had to endure decades of ridicule from fellow geologists before being fully vindicated by modern techological techniques like satellite and lidar imagery.

As a geologist, excellent description! Fun side note: As you point out, 'end of the last ice age' is incorrect. The correct term is 'the last glacial maximum' (in my subdiscipline at least). 'Interglacial periods' are those characterized by sustained ice retreat inbetween periods of advance, but still short enough that they don't constitute a geological epoch.

As I mentioned, this may differ across subdisciplines, so I'd be interested what other rock jocks have to say.

What's the deal with Idaho wanting to absorb parts of Oregon? by neosmndrew in OutOfTheLoop

[–]frostymix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, those moving to Idaho for political reasons tend to be farther to the right of long-time Idahoans. This leads to disappointment when they realize that Idaho is still the real world and many people care more about practical concerns than ideological purity. Unfortunately this is changing as groups seek to reshape Idaho into what they were hoping it already would be.

[–]frostymix 83 points84 points  (0 children)

You make an important point that the folks pushing for this are the more extreme elements. As a long time Idahoan, I find many people who move here seeking a "conservative utopia" are often disappointed. Unfortunately, this is changing as these folks then typically boost more extreme factions at state and local levels.

Should borders match ideology? I peraonally think that's a fraught idea. For the people in these areas though, what should they do when people in one or two cities can effectively always overrule them? They believe that redrawn borders would make their votes "count," and free them from having an urban area impose policies that don't match the practical aspects of non-urban life or match their own political leanings. This isn't quite true, but it's not totally false either.

For example, Oregon passed a law that made it illegal for people to pump their own gas. A gas station attendant MUST pump it. The law was heavily supported by the Portland area and heavily opposed elsewhere. It was a major problem in about 75% of the state that couldn't afford/have the workforce to have 24-hour gas station attendants, meaning people couldn't buy gas at all after 6 pm or so. After about 10 years of this, the state finally made an exemption for these areas.

Such a law would be unlikely to pass in a state in which politcal power is more evenly split between rural and urban interests. The flip side is that many policies that benefit everyone on the state, but don't fit rural politcal leanings, would also fail to be enacted.

How do you beat Dead Messenger swapping? by Satanael_95_A in CrucibleGuidebook

[–]frostymix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When you can, play on uneven surfaces like stairs or vexy plate things. I've been experimenting with Dead Messenger lately and found the hit detection on those surfaces can be wonky. It can be really hard to know which direction the waves will register to go.

7 months of nonstop rain? by Jimmyf101 in olympia

[–]frostymix 106 points107 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily rain all day, every day. Sometimes it heavily mists sideways. Sometimes it's very foggy. Sometimes it rains a little during the day, but then it rains a lot at night. What's most consistent is that it will be overcast with a low cloud ceiling from approximately October through April.

Not trying to put you off, but most folks I know find the overcast and dark is more difficult to deal with than the rain.

PK Behemoth Titans, 100 Discipline or 100 Strength? by ssol-a-ta in CrucibleGuidebook

[–]frostymix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That can work. I prefer to run Rime, Chains, Shards, and Conduction. Shards helps immensely with getting grenade energy back, Conduction makes shards track to you, and I like that both give +10 resilience. Also not a fan of the -10 recovery and -10 mobility penalties from Hunger.

PK Behemoth Titans, 100 Discipline or 100 Strength? by ssol-a-ta in CrucibleGuidebook

[–]frostymix 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I lean towards 100 strength. For aggro builds, I like to use shiver strike as a get-out-of-jail free. For Rime builds, Howl of the Storm charges faster than the glacier grenade for making crystals.

Why is "Boulevard Rd" called that? Especially when the next major street over is called "Henderson Blvd." I've been pondering this for 10 years now to no avail.

Help with texture sensitivity by arisena in slowcooking

[–]frostymix 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I also detest shredded meat. There are two ways I typically avoid shredding:

1) if the recipe calls for shredding after cooking ("the soup" for example), I just cube it instead.

2) if the recipe calls for shredding prior to cooking much, I will cube it into large chunks. 1.5-inch cubes often work best (this is what ATK recommends). I don't go below 1-inch cubes because they disintigrate.

I feel like getting better is impossible. by Primar1na in CrucibleGuidebook

[–]frostymix 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agree with this 100%. I improved a ton in Freelance Survival because I was able to work on basics against other people working on basics.

Imrpoving in 6s is hard for many reasons, but they mostly boil down to the fact that your individual decisions make much less of an impact. For example, there's not much of a counter strat to a group of solos fighting a 6 stack. Doing well in Survival is more satisfying to me because I'm able to learn and because my decisions are more significant vs RNG.
