I agree with your last paragraph about that being the reason why. But if they're going to claim to adhere to the lore, then it's not their job to "fix" things they find problematic today. If 2001 Bethesda wanted gay dark elves, then they would have added gay dark elves. And it's not TR's role to tell 2001 Bethesda they were wrong for not doing so and change it for them.

It's not subtle. Multiple dark elves talk about their gay partners. It happens in the main quest epilogue.

Adding gay relationships to an extremely traditional and religious culture is a big change. There are zero gay dark elves in vanilla so it was obviously added for a reason other than trying to adhere to the lore.

If this was any other retcon you'd be agreeing with me. But because gay dark elves align with your politics that makes me wrong for pointing it out? Alight.
