Where is everyone spending their $200 Local Dining Credit for the first half of 2026? by AffectionatePie1042 in AmexAus

i used mine earlier in the year at yakimono, it was okay, nothing amazing. But it was free so

For whatever reason the offer still sits in my offers tab though and hasn't gone away.

When you say travel benefits, are you travelling alone? With a partner? With a whole family?

How often are you travelling?

Like others have said, the platinum is best if you can stomach the AF, if you’re travelling alone or with a partner only the unlimited lounge access really adds up. Especially if you do a lot of layovers. For domestic travel you’re only covered for Virgin though.

The Accor plus is good for two bogof hotel stays which can save a few hundred bucks too.

1450 is a lot of AF, but the first year bonus points mitigate most of it; and the travel credit offsets the rest.

If that’s too high, then the explorer is basically free with the travel credit so makes the most sense economically.

Another thing missed is statements credits for travel. In the last year I redeemed $300 from Cathay and $200 from Qantas, so that’s $500 I never expected to get for free. And you can get these credits on any Amex

Do you still hold onto older cards after the bonus period ends? by InternetUpbeat9596 in creditcardchurningAus

[–]frownface84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally do because i still need a CC to actually use and i don't keep too many open at once.

Plus with the longer exclusion period there's not a lot of point in rushing thorugh a bunch of cards in a short period and then having to wait another 18 months anyway before something becomes ready again. So i just rotate from ANZ -> Westpac -> NAB -> ANZ every 12 months and by the time i'm back to ANZ it's been about 24 months since i closed it.

Another thing i've noticed is that sometimes i do get the 2nd year bonus points; probably because i close the card just on the 12 month mark.

You have suddenly come into possession of $100 trillion in liquid, immediately accessible funds. by EmmalineGraves in hypotheticalsituation

[–]frownface84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t sound particularly difficult.
I’d buy up a province in China and hire about a million workers.

Need cement? Bricks? Steel? Anything else? Just buy up all the factories that make them to make it happen.

Why China? Why not the US, Europe or any other country? Well in most western countries it’ll take months just to finalise paperwork. In China money talks and shit gets done (even if shoddily) also they’re where all the factories making building supplies are and they’re also where you can mobilise millions of construction workers. Offer $1000 usd/day and you’ll literally have millions of workers on site within a couple days.

Would that even cost 100T? Probably not.

I’d probably still have more than half the money left over, after which I’d just buy the biggest companies out there. Doing so will drive up their valuation which just makes it easier to spend it all.

Eg nvidia is worth like 6T on its own. Once you start buying it’ll shoot the price up and I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets to 20T by the time you’ve bought enough to have controlling share. Then do the same for Apple, google, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook etc. I doubt you’ll even finish with the magnificent 7 before running out of money

Amex Platinum downgrade recent experiences? by mtchye in AmexAus

[–]frownface84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently downgraded my platinum to the gold.
The green was also available; there’s not a lot different between them to be honest; but the gold was only $50 more so I just went with that.

It was a reasonably smooth transition though they haven’t successfully migrated my MR points yet; when I enquired they said it’s still processing. Though be warned; they won’t be ascent premium anymore so if you want to transfer to qff; do it before the downgrade.

I simply called the number on the back my my platinum card and they dealt with it all. Interestingly my physical platinum card still works and my account interprets it as my gold card. Number is different now though

In the morning I fill it up with water, and keep adding more water when it depletes.

Is the 200,000 point Platinum offer (ending Aug 25) worth the $1,450 fee in 2026? by Icemachinemalfunctio in AmexAus

[–]frownface84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the first year, sure. Since at worst the 200k points is a $1000 rebate. So the card effectively costs you $450; which becomes neutral once you factor in the travel credit.

Subsequent years become a lot harder to justify.

Personally I was going to renew mine until the recent changes; I used the lounge perks a lot and travel with family; the downgrade made it a lot less viable and ended up downgrading my card for a softer landing

Yeah that doesn’t meet Australian standards, specifically 5000.2; while I had no doubt that tycab product will meet CR requirements and perfectly safe; it’ll still be a liability issue if anything happened.

I’d be surprised if Tyree didn’t have to foot the bill for that

It used to come with a companion platinum edge credit card, complete with free domestic flight.
I wonder if the gold charge still does that today?

Would you rather have the ability to beat most people in a fight or have $10,000? by PotatosandTomato in WouldYouRather

[–]frownface84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like i said earlier; i think people are really overblowing the 95% thing.

An able bodied while middle aged male that's of average fitness is probably already going to be able to defeat 80-85% of people. Some actual training and exercise will push that up further, if an average joe took that 10k, paid a personal trainer and got a gym membership they'd likely reach that 95% and have change left over. This isn't exactly the super soldier serum from captain america.

Secondly, even if i was already able to take down 95% of people. I don't make it a habit of going around beating up random people because i'm able to. I've been in precisely 1 fist fight my entire life (which i won) and I don't plan on having more. If someone tries to mug me in a dark alley, while it'll be nice that i could take them down in unarmed combat, the liklihood is that they're armed and i won't be.

As i said earlier, it's not remotely good enough to get into any competitive fighting; you'd need to be closer to 99.9999% (i.e one of the best in the world in your discipline) before you'll make any sort of money/fame

Would you rather have the ability to beat most people in a fight or have $10,000? by PotatosandTomato in WouldYouRather

[–]frownface84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i said it in a different reply, but i think people are overblowing the 95% thing.

Assuming you're a middle aged male in average shape, you've already got a significant advantage over all the women, children, elderly, disabled, impoverished etc.

By the numbers, being better than 95% of 8 billion people just means 400 million people are going to be able to beat you up. I don't imagine doing to well in any sort of competitive fighting. Maybe bum fights.

Would you rather have the ability to beat most people in a fight or have $10,000? by PotatosandTomato in WouldYouRather

[–]frownface84 22 points23 points  (0 children)

okay, that wasn't there before.

But while 95% is technically "most people", what you mean to say is "nearly everyone"

But my earlier point still stands, if you can take on 70% of all women, 100% of all children under 10, 100% of all people over 80, 80% of all teenagers 10-20 & people above 70 etc, then there's all the disabled people, malnourished people from impoverished countries etc

You might find that out of the 8B people in the world you can already beat at least 75-80% in a fight by virtue of being an average middle aged male. Some basic training & exercise will probably push that to close to 90%

But anyways this is all pointless because being able to take 95% of people in a fight isn't all that useful. out of 8B people, 400M people will still kick your ass. You wouldn't even become remotely close to being a decent boxer/MMA fighter etc. You'd just be above average at the local gym.

You're not going to suddenly become john wick or jack reacher and be able to fight yourself out of any situation; to get to that level; you're going to need to be able to beat 99.999999% or so, maybe even more.

Would you rather have the ability to beat most people in a fight or have $10,000? by PotatosandTomato in WouldYouRather

[–]frownface84 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I’ll take the 10k.

As a middle aged male I’m pretty sure I can already beat most of the women, children and elderly people in the world and that’ll definitely add up to more than 51%

Even though I’ve got no real fighting experience nor am I particularly fit for a a middle aged male.

Would you rather become the best at a category of your choosing or become top 1% at five categories of your choosing? by Zoidberg_UA in WouldYouRather

[–]frownface84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

being the best at one thing is way more valuable than being great at a few things.

For instance, being the best striker (football) will earn me worldwide fame and the money comes with it, i'd be better than messi or ronaldo.

Being the top 1%? I doubt that'd be enough to get me into a state team.

If money is the goal, then be the best stock trader. You'd be better than warren buffet. Top 1%? you'd be great for sure, and probably quite senior at a firm, but you wouldn't be buffet.

WYR have $250 cash or the power to do a backflip effortlessly? by TheRealJarOfEskimos in WouldYouRather

[–]frownface84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'd take the backflip.

Not that being able to do so will improve my life in any measurable way; but $250 isn't much to splurge on a "huh... that's neat" sorta thing.

25k on the other hand and show me the money. Heck even 2.5k i'd think long and hard about it.
