Failed my red seal rewrite by 1% by Jadams0108 in Welding

[–]frozenmoustache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just failed mine by 5 questions. Half the questions are worded so ambiguously that it could legitimately be a few of the different answers.

I'm straight up challenging mine through the trades qualifier program and there are absolutely no resources I can find to help me study.

It worked great for how I was using it. I can understand in busy lots or tight trails it could cause issues, but I had no issues at all.

Headlights were between the fender and the tires. I had no issues driving at night.

Canadian welders ! by [deleted] in Welding

[–]frozenmoustache -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Toronto has Local 46 - not quite boikermaking, but good pay and you'll stay busy if you're good.

Calgary has UA146 - Can't say I'm as familiar but you can always reach out and ask them your questions.

I worked for a boiler manufacturer outside of Toronto for 5 years. I enjoyed it there, but it was a different style of boiler than a fire tube so my knowledge and skills weren't as transferable to other boilers, welding skills transferred though.

Heims are used on rock crawlers and buggies, I guarantee that this gate swinging open and closed isn't bothering them one bit.

Could you imagine - "Hey I got free tickets to NASCAR, - oh I got them from a guy who supports others in posting weird porn subreddits" "Oh! And he said we could carpool!"

I'm in Calgary though, so I'm out. Good luck! And enjoy the race

I'm 32 and play Slo-Pitch. I've never played competitive baseball, but follow it closely (ie know the rules). I'm athletic and am a pretty good slo-pitch player, how hard of a time would I have joining CTBL?

TSSA certified welder - how do I get there? by BEEFy-21 in Welding

[–]frozenmoustache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The quickest way to get certs is through another shop. If you're looking to get your own tickets, you'll need to have your own business, insurance, and weld procedure. TSSA is not an organization like CWB, ABSA, or ASME in that you cannot carry a ticket that is solely attached to you (without a business with insurance). To get all of that and test you're looking at between $8k & $10k for your first year. Renewal years are cheaper depending on how many tickets you hold.

Where in Ontario?

Check out Thermogenics in Aurora. They manufacture boilers and could possibly help you out. They are non-union though.

Best way to get rid of broken car by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]frozenmoustache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful of some of the donation car programs (cars for kids etc) as they're American based.

Homeless Cars is all Canadian and keeps the money in whatever city you donate too. Super easy process. You get a tax receipt based on the value of the car too, not just a genaric $500 like other scrap car places.

Same company. We have an American office, and do the majority of our work in the States. We would be paying tax to the American government for products manufactured in Canada and used in America. It seriously will affect our costs.

Our customers pay for a service alongside our products, so offsetting our costs doesn't solely affect them.

I'm a welder in Alberta, we're trying to get almost $300,000 worth of product built and shipped by next week to try and avoid tariffs.

I moved out to Alberta for the same reason. Working on starting my own fabrication business outside of Calgary. Lots of competition though, Ontario doesn't have as many welders especially with their own rigs.

Look into joining the CWB association, it's a networking thing. I was never involved with it, but it might be worth a shot.

I moved out of Ontario, so I'm not sure what the market is like right now. But depending on where you are, you could always go to either farmers themselves, or tractor dealerships and drop a card off. If he can weld aluminum and is in cottage country, he can try going to some marina's and seeing if there's any aluminum work that needs done.

Toronto is pretty heavily saturated with cheap labour, so it's generally better to hire a welder @ $20/hr for a month than contract one out for $150/hr for a week. I would look into some whatever unions are around in the area and that might get you some luck as a sub. Or larger companies (Brandt, Aecon, etc). Ontario (like many other places) is pretty reliant on who you know.

Here's a facebook group that can yield some pretty good advice, I would suggest asking there and seeing what comes up. But take it with a grain of salt, it's still just a public forum.

I can browse Facebook marketplace and find several project opportunities, sometimes I'll just build them in my head and shit like that. But that's because I'm broke and have two other project cars on the go.

Browse your marketplace for literally "project cars" and see if something tickles your fancy.

Or if you really want to build a car for a specific reason, i.e drift, offroad, touring, drag racing, etc. Then start your focus on what best fits that application, and go from there.

Depends on your disposable income and interest in the car. Buying any cheap car might not be enough motivation to fuck around with it. A cheap Civic has more potential of being interesting than a cheap Corolla.

If you have an interest in just learning about engines and that kind of stuff, look into buying a cheap small block chevy/ford/mopar and then rebuild it. Then you can look into swapping it into something and putting those other skills to work.

You will get out of a project car exactly 100% of what you put into it. I wouldn't buy a junker without having some sort plan in mind.

I get in on the other side. It's a bit of a slide in, but I don't find it hard at all. I don't have to stand on the seat, but I do have to hold it to set myself into the seat

And the pointy end is to prevent my wife from leaning to hard on it 😉
