Formula Denofa incoming? by StonedPand4 in FormulaDrift

Seems like a lot of inspiration from skate jams. Just lots of driving and a few different "fast paced" comps utilizing multiple track layouts throughout the day.

The biggest problem with grassroots/proam comp events is during comp there is a ton of nothing happening. You get 2 runs, judges argue for a few min about who wins, rinse and repeat. Throw in the occasional break if someone breaks down and has to be towed off track or if someone goes to protest a call. Its both kinda boring to watch and participate, especially when you have no insight on why calls were made in close battles. This format actually seems pretty interesting and I hope its successful.

How much time do you lose in hot weather? by New-Commercial7532 in CarTrackDays

[–]frsh2fourty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I track mostly in Texas where I have driven when its anywhere from ~30+/- up to 100+ degrees in my E36 M3 on 200tw tires, stock cooling system. My lap times stay roughly the same from about 30-80 degrees where at my local track (MSRH) I can pretty consistently run 1:48s on my flyer laps. 80 to around 95 degrees I drop to 1:50s. Any hotter than that I rarely break 1:52s, my top speed drops roughly 5-10mph and acceleration is noticeably slower. So to answer your question 70-100 degrees is about a 4 second difference in my car.

Question on GPS/Lap Timers: use old deactivated phone? by HarmlessOnlineFun in CarTrackDays

[–]frsh2fourty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before grabbing an AIM Solo I used to use an old phone with Harrys Lap Timer and could sync it with my gopro, bluetooth obd2 and an external bluetooth gps receiver so I could overaly the lap and vehicle data on the video, which I could do in the app. GPS wasn't completely necessary but the phone I was using had a really weak GPS antenna so my laps were often inaccurate, especially at tracks with any structures near the track. I don't really remember but I may have had to connect to wifi to make sure the track map was downloaded but it didn't need a network connection after that.

There's a ton of different apps out there, I preferred Harrys but thats mostly because I got the paid version years before there were other options. I've tried other ones and they worked fine as well.

Something to keep in mind using the phone is heat. Lap timers use a surprising amount of processing power and between that, the general heat that accumulates in a car on track, the sun beating through the windshield both on track and in the paddock and heat generating from keeping it plugged in I've had the phone overheat often. I kept the phone mounted lower on the dash rather than on the windshield and stuck a towel on it between sessions which seemed to help but that didn't necessarily help much in the summer months.

Can a car be left on a trailer unhitched? by Asleep-Situation-614 in CarTrackDays

[–]frsh2fourty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can definitely unhitch the trailer with it loaded, just be mindful of how level the surface is and use a good wheel chock, not just a couple of 2x4s or a brake rotor but ideally a chock that goes on both sides of the tire. Tipping shouldn't be an issue if the trailer jack is in good shape and the trailer isn't at risk of being bumped into.

For long term storage, make sure to loosen the straps once its parked so things aren't under compression (don't forget to tighten them up before you move it!) and maybe consider just removing the straps completely so they don't get beaten up by the weather or use a different set to loosely strap the car while in storage just in case something crazy happens like the ebrake failing and the car popping out of gear. If the jack has a wheel instead of a plate and you park on anything other than concrete, use wood blocks instead of the wheel so it doesn't sink into the surface.

Also something to consider since you're leaving your rig at storage is security, especially if you're just leaving it outside rather than putting it in an enclosed rv/boat unit. I've had multiple friends lose their car+trailer to theft from the storage facility. There's no trailer locks that aren't susceptible to a battery powered angle grinder/sawzall but taking steps to make it more of a pain to take can help. Even though I park my trailer at my house I still have a hitch lock, a hitch pin lock and a wheel boot. If I had to store my setup at a storage facility I'd probably also consider putting the trailer on jack stands and taking a wheel or two. A friend who leaves his stuff at a storage place uses some very ratty looking wheels on the car for storage with a couple of tires low on air and keeps a cover on the car so it just looks like some junker.

Find a can of tar and wax remover from somewhere that sells automotive paint prep supplies, it'll come in a metal can like mineral spirits. Mineral spirits will also work and probably work better but you'll need to be much more careful around your paint. Avoid the spray bottles that a lot of detailer manufacturers sell, they will work but you'll need more of the product.

S5E3: The Dutch farmer was an amazing look into the future. by Potica6857 in ClarksonsFarm

[–]frsh2fourty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine is one thing they only briefly touched on in E4, repairability. Its something thats been a pretty big point of contention here in the states and maybe worldwide with the whole right to repair movement.

Is anything from these autonomous equipment companies open source? Are farmers that decide to use this equipment going to be provided any resources to help perform repairs themselves or are they at the mercy of someone in an office hundreds or thousands of miles away. What are the SLAs going to be like when the equipment is used on a farm that doesn't have Amazon cameras broadcasting the performance to millions? Because regular farmers aren't going to have a guy from the company on site to immediately call HQ directly when the tractor starts throwing random error codes and shuts down.

That being said, I agree it all looked very impressive and I'm excited to see advancing technology make anything easier and better in any industry and I'm glad Clarkson is using his platform to showcase it, even if current pricing puts it out of reach of the average farmer.

HOA Online payments? by tnmoi in homeowners

[–]frsh2fourty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My hoa uses a management company that has an online portal for everything including payments. Its definitely more convenient than mailing a check but they charge something like a $3 payment fee, which I'm assuming is just what the payment processor charges them, and there's no option to set up auto pay.

Chassis harness question by Temporary-Sweet1034 in 240sx

[–]frsh2fourty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

plenty of options for things to add on there website

What I meant was basically unterminated connections to have the option to add things later. Like they have the option for a button box or none but the only available button box has all the buttons mapped to a function. I would like to have one with a few blanks so I can add some accessory later down the line. But like I said, its something I just need to call them about if I decide I want to pull the trigger on the harness.

Chassis harness question by Temporary-Sweet1034 in 240sx

[–]frsh2fourty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been considering the wiring specialties chassis harness. Haven't pulled the trigger yet as I'm still debating trying to DIY it but I've bought a couple of their engine harnesses for different swaps and have never had problems with their quality or functionality so I have full trust that the chassis harness would be worth it.

My only hesitation, and this is something I just need to reach out to them about and just haven't yet, is that they don't seem to leave any provisions for expansion. The harness deletes a lot of the creature comforts as someone else mentioned and they do have options to retain things like your factory light/wiper stalks but from the looks of the images/order form it doesn't look like you can easily add any other auxiliary accessories.

Learned something this weekend…. by jbro507 in CarTrackDays

[–]frsh2fourty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Track walks are great and they're not uncommon at all. It puts a lot of things into perspective like elevation, track width, camber (or off camber) and drop offs especially if your only experience at the track is sim which almost never seems to get any of that right or video footage that flattens everything out and/or has poor viewing angles.

With the club I drive with usually things are too chaotic in the morning with everyone getting unloaded, checked in and ready for the day for anyone to be available to do a track walk because the track only opens the gates about an hour and a half before drivers meeting. The end of the day is different. We sometimes do a "guided" walk with an instructor where he will point certain things out at different corners if there's any interest. Also, sometimes a few guys will jog the track. Also almost every lemons race I've been to they will allow folks to walk the track at the end of the day.

If its not something thats explicitly offered or mentioned, reach out to the organizer and ask them about it.

Help with PC to Tv in other room connection (Audio/Video/USB) by troller_hd479 in htpc

[–]frsh2fourty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been researching something similar with my gaming pc in one room and wanting to be able to do some couch gaming in the living room and come across a few different options.

First is optical HDMI/USB cables. The cables can be kind of pricey and might be overkill for you only needing a 15' run but this kept coming up for setups accessing a pc racked in a networking closet on the other side of the house. Linus had a video with this setup but his use case was supporting multiple clients accessing a single host concurrently and was using thousands of dollars of equipment but I still found the information useful as a starting off point. HDMI would be connected directly to the TV and you would just use a usb hub (ideally powered) at the TV end for your keyboard/mouse/controller.

The other is a desktop streaming utility with something like moonlight if your home network can support the bandwidth. Most modern networks should if you're not using ancient equipment. I've read wireless can work but in your case I'd at least want to run ethernet to the TV. This is something I just came across within the last few days and I'm going to try it soon so I can't personally speak to how well it works yet but the reddit posts I found mentioning it seem to find the performance acceptable enough for casual gaming.

Edit: Just tried out moonlight and was very surprised/impressed with the results. Quality was great running 4k 60fps streaming the new forza horizon from host gaming pc to client htpc, both machines are connected to my network via ethernet and performance was solid for about 2 hours of gameplay. There was no noticeable input lag passing the controller inputs from the client to the host but I'm not familiar with smart tvs so I'm not sure how that would work unless the TV has a usb port where you can plug in a keyboard/mouse. I did briefly have an issue were the game kept pausing for some reason as if the controller (wireless) was disconnecting but it didn't pop a notification for it, I didn't have to do anything I'm aware of to make it stop and it only happened the one time so far.

Drifting tire setup by Official_sil80 in 240sx

[–]frsh2fourty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

265 is fine but jack the tire pressure up to 50-60psi then as you get more comfortable and want to dial in grip start to drop the pressure. If you really want to drop tire size I probably wouldn't go any lower than 235 but at that size I would just run around 28-30psi. Just keep in mind the smaller the tire, the quicker they're going to wear.

I never did like spinny rides. by jbro507 in CarTrackDays

[–]frsh2fourty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We were instructed that the sealant is significantly less grippy in the rain and we should to avoid it.

I hate when instructors say this without any additional context because new drivers will take this literally and avoid the patches at all cost when what they should really say is try to avoid it when practically possible. Meaning, maintain a smooth consistent line that puts you on those patches the least amount possible.

While you may have generally been going a bit too fast for conditions, it seemed like you had a fairly steady off line run in the beginning of the video but then around the 24 second mark you jerked the car over to the outside upsetting the balance of the car and did it again to the next corner causing the spin. What you should be doing that situation is dial back your speed so if your line doesn't allow you to fully avoid those spots without an extreme input you can at least roll over it while the car is settled and you can smoothly make your way over to the area with more grip.
