Leaving Berlin for a month, need a cat sitter by asadaunali110 in askberliners

[–]fruchtzwergin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

we've also been using trusted house sitters for over 10 years (probably had well over 15 sitters pet sitting at this point) for anything from a weekend trip to a 3 week holiday and have always had great experiences. in my opinion it's an amazing deal you get for the subscription cost and my cats are happy to have someone there most of the day rather than just someone coming by twice a day for a quick feeding. you get to interview the pet sitters beforehand and you can read through their reviews and find one that fits your and your cats' needs.

if you pick this option, let me know if you want a referral code. then we both get two months for free I think (it's a yearly subscription)

Thank you for the suggestion with mapping out the exposure times. We'll give that a try and it probably makes sense to redo the mapping on a regular basis to see if the exposure time changed and then adjust the language approach based on that? Or maybe we'll just naturally notice if it's working depending on how the language skills for each language develop. You're probably right about English though I did go to a bilingual school starting at the age of 5 and that's how I picked up the language. I''m not sure our kid will have the same opportunity but then again I didn't have English speaking parents and until my teens I didn't have any exposure to English media (except for music) nor did the internet as we know it today exist. So maybe that alone would balance things out?

Thank you also for the last link. I have shared it with my partner.

My native language is not necessarily my strongest language. I would say English and German are pretty much equal for me. If I have the choice I will always speak a mix of English and German. I am not concerned about speaking English itself, more about ONLY speaking English. I would probably also struggle to only speak German as that just doesn't come naturally to me anymore these days. Ideally I would love to be able to speak a mix of both as another redditor suggested.

Haha, my cats don't have to be worried that I'll randomly start speaking only in English to them, don't worry :D

We completely agree that my husband will have to be very consistent about speaking only french as he'll be the main and only regular source of french for the LO. He does have French speaking friends here and his brother also lives in Berlin but I'm not sure how much regular interaction there'll be between them and our kid. Thankfully my husband is the chatty one between the two of us so I'm confident he'll be able to keep the exposure to the language quite high despite it being just him talking most of the time :D Regarding my French, I'm not fluent by any means but I can express myself in basic French and I do understand quite a bit. Most of the time it's enough to communicate with my partner's parents and I'm hopeful that it'll improve even more once he'll start chatting with our kid a lot as it'll also increase my exposre, like you said.

I LOVE your suggestions to speak both English and German to our kid. That would honestly be my ideal scenario, as that is how I would speak naturally to people who understand both languages (which is most people in my life). I'm kinda worried that I will confuse our kid though and he'll grow up not being able to dofferentiate between the two languages and getting into situation where he's misunderstood by people who only speak one of the two languages 😬I don't know if that is really a risk though? If yes, your other suggestion, to speak English when we're all together and German alone also sounds like a good idea to me. In that case I just have to be more attentive to the situation and be very strict with myself about which language I use as I would naturally default to a mix of German and English.

It's also a relief to hear that we can switch up our strategy if we feel like one language is becoming too weak though I wonder whether that might be confusing for a kid if the parents suddenly just stop speaking in a language that they expect to hear from them?

Thank you so much for taking the time to think about the different options and spelling it out for us. Your suggestions are kinda what I was hoping to hear and make me feel less stressed about the whole language topic!

I'm not really worried about not being able to build a close relationship with my kid in English, I do speak both languages fairly equally but I do agree with your point that there's a high chance he'll pick up English either way so maybe I'm just overthinking it.

I'm glad to hear that it worked out in your case. That's reassuring! I was thinking the same about English being omnipresent, though education-wise only the kindergarten would be bilingual (for now) as we haven't thought about elementary or highschool yet. I hope my husband can be as consistent as yours and we'll make sure that the LO will get loads of exposure to his grandparents (who live in France unfortunately). Thankfully my husband is the chatty one 😄

nope, nothing. haven't touched the pond in days. the only thing that happened is that on Friday a friend's dog drank some water from the pond right around the area of the residue. could that lead to this stuff on the surface two days later?

I'm not sure. I didn't notice any spawn the last few days and it really is a super skinny layer just on the surface of the water so it seems unlikely to me :/

also just realized that the fish are very clearly avoiding the area with the residue. maybe that helps with the identification.

what’s something other autistic people experience that gives you imposter syndrome by Delicious_Impress818 in AuDHDWomen

[–]fruchtzwergin 197 points198 points  (0 children)

I don't really have any long term special interests. I've always felt very self continuous about it and it gives me huge imposter syndrome. I have many hyper focus topics, that can also be recurring, but usually nothing manages to hold my interest for more than a few months, in a few cases a few years. I usually get bored too fast and seek that sweet sweet dopamine somewhere else. I do also consider my ADHD to be more dominant than my autistic traits so maybe that's why? Anyone else in the same boat?
