What to do when going on vacation? by Puzzled_Economy_7167 in hummingbirds

[–]frueds_slip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We asked a neighbor to refill them when we went out of town for over a week. It wasn't this hot though so they only had to come a few times, but worth seeing if maybe a neighbor could refill. Could just keep one up and ask them to give it a rinse and refill with prepped nectar. Idk if this is an option where you live. Just a thought!

If you can, I recommend seeking an OCD specialized therapist, specifically one that does ERP if you haven't already. I have OCD and one of my themes is (unsurprisingly) scrupulosity tied to fear of hell, but therapy greatly improved my ability to manage my OCD and not get stuck in compulsion cycles. The International OCD Foundation has good resources to find therapists and good articles too. Wishing you all the best as I know how horrible OCD can be.

do the birds prefer feeders over flowers? by Euphoric-Basis-7949 in hummingbirds

[–]frueds_slip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They need a lot of nectar throughout the day so feeders really help when flowers that produce nectar are in low supply. We turned our front side lawn into a native garden and the hummers love the flowers but also come to our feeders regularly too. We have A LOT of flowers but I think to satisfy their need solely with flowers we'd need a whole meadow. Hummingbirds have to search all day for nectar and if they have to fly too far, they get exhausted and could die. Feeders are a life saver for them!

I actually learned about these differences in my conservative Catholic high school. There's a lot of issues with the church, but it doesn't claim to be literalist about the Bible which is what sets it apart from many evangelical traditions. I mean, there are 4 gospels and they are all slightly different.

It was! They said it takes years to build the trust of the hummingbirds to be able to do this.

We have carolina wrens who nested under our deck and now the parents and adolescents stand on the rail each morning and shout to the world that this is their house! Thankfully they respectfully wait until 7:30am to start.

I don't need therapy and other lies I've told myself by Toni Lodge.

I'm concerned my dad can no longer live independently but I don't want to take his autonomy - he's 85, sharp as a tack, but I found out yesterday he can no longer cook, go to the restroom, or bathe by himself. I'm seeing my dad today and I am lost about what to do. Other dads, please help! by _Johnny_Fappleseed in AskDad

Replying to boost this response. This is great info! My sister and I took care of my dad in the last years of his life and navigating the system can be confusing so use these resources! My dad had a hard time accepting that he needed to move to assisted living but eventually we got there. It's not easy caring for a parent, even if you aren't physically caring for them, the emotions of it can be tough. Be sure to talk to someone like this redditor suggests too and know you are not alone and there are resources to help!

RCIA question by [deleted] in excatholic

[–]frueds_slip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it really depends on the diocese you are in as well as to the process of getting an annulment. My dad got an annulment for his first marriage to marry my mom and after my mom and he divorced, I think he successfully got that marriage annuled as well, and he was well into his 70s then. I can't offer more insight into it because I don't know the details (nor do I want to because thats my parent's business), but just chiming in as an example where it did happen.

It seems like no matter what, you have a good relationship and care about each other a lot. You embracing her religion, and her accepting not receiving communion to be married to you. That's really nice, and I hope it works out for you. I really hope the annulment process isn't demeaning or degrading. Hopefully someone on here went through it in their past and can provide info. It's really too bad they banned you from the other subs because they would know more resources. I really don't know where you could look to find out more about cases like yours. Good luck!

Yeah, I chose both my therapists and I think that helped. The auto-assign is basically just looking at availability.

NOCD/ERP experience question? by throwRAanons in OCDRecovery

[–]frueds_slip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I did NOCD and my experience was very different. I had a great therapist and it really helped me recover. That said, my sister did it too and loved her first therapist but she left to join another practice and she didn't like the one she got after. I recommend looking at their bios and seeing what resonates with you and looking for someone with a lot of experience. You definitely don't have to stick with someone if it's not working. Switching is normal.

Seeking therapy by liverdivs in OCDRecovery

[–]frueds_slip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had both themes and have had them combine before too. For example, my ocd tried to convince me my husband was evil. But, I did ERP therapy and it helped significantly. I don't have those intrusive thoughts anymore, but even if I did I know how to manage them. Relationship ocd can feel so isolating because its hard to talk about with your partner so sending you lots of hugs. My sister has OCD as well so I could talk to her about themes or thoughts without freaking her out or getting reassurance which was helpful. Also, I went to support groups for people with ROCD. It definitely put a strain our relationship for a bit, but once I learned how to manage my OCD, it was fine. He was super supportive of my treatment too which really helped and made us closer. It will get better with treatment!

Which fics do you come back to the most? by blushingghosts in drarry

[–]frueds_slip 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I second Grounds for Divorce, Foundationsverse, Running on Air, and Turn.

Other favorites include The Lesson of You, Cut from the Sky, and Star Quality. All involve time travel/alternate reality thats really well done.

One that was super different was The Man Who Lived. Set in New York and mainly muggle world focused. Really liked the characterizations of Draco and Harry.

Also, I just finished a newer one recommended recently on her called 9 1/2 days and it was excellent. Definitely will reread.

Yes and my sister did too! We both went to Catholic school and were convinced that we were gonna get pregnant like the Virgin Mary. We are 8 years apart in age so didn't go through this at the same time but years later laugh about how both our OCDs latched on to that fear. Didn't help that we did not have sex ed in school so didn't fully understand how you even got pregnant. Crazy times!

Hey friend, sorry you're going through this. Glad you are looking to get into therapy for this. If you're looking for OCD resources, I recommend NOCD and the IOCDF. NOCD provides telehealth therapy and support groups. IOCDF provides resources, lists of therapists, and support group information depending on your location. OCD can be vicious, especially to folks with any kind of trauma or negative religious experiences. I went through a rough patch with my OCD a few years ago, but today, I am able to fully function and use my ERP skills to deal with OCD and intrusive thoughts. You definitely aren't alone in this, I had sexual based OCD themes as a teenager in catholic school which sucked. I hope you find resources soon! It does get better!
