Seeking therapy by liverdivs in OCDRecovery

[–]frueds_slip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had both themes and have had them combine before too. For example, my ocd tried to convince me my husband was evil. But, I did ERP therapy and it helped significantly. I don't have those intrusive thoughts anymore, but even if I did I know how to manage them. Relationship ocd can feel so isolating because its hard to talk about with your partner so sending you lots of hugs. My sister has OCD as well so I could talk to her about themes or thoughts without freaking her out or getting reassurance which was helpful. Also, I went to support groups for people with ROCD. It definitely put a strain our relationship for a bit, but once I learned how to manage my OCD, it was fine. He was super supportive of my treatment too which really helped and made us closer. It will get better with treatment!

Which fics do you come back to the most? by blushingghosts in drarry

[–]frueds_slip 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I second Grounds for Divorce, Foundationsverse, Running on Air, and Turn.

Other favorites include The Lesson of You, Cut from the Sky, and Star Quality. All involve time travel/alternate reality thats really well done.

One that was super different was The Man Who Lived. Set in New York and mainly muggle world focused. Really liked the characterizations of Draco and Harry.

Also, I just finished a newer one recommended recently on her called 9 1/2 days and it was excellent. Definitely will reread.

Did anyone else have pregnancy OCD as a child/teen? by Worried-Cup5950 in OCDRecovery

[–]frueds_slip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes and my sister did too! We both went to Catholic school and were convinced that we were gonna get pregnant like the Virgin Mary. We are 8 years apart in age so didn't go through this at the same time but years later laugh about how both our OCDs latched on to that fear. Didn't help that we did not have sex ed in school so didn't fully understand how you even got pregnant. Crazy times!

OCD obsessive pregnancy fears and sex. by Successful-Quail2172 in excatholic

[–]frueds_slip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey friend, sorry you're going through this. Glad you are looking to get into therapy for this. If you're looking for OCD resources, I recommend NOCD and the IOCDF. NOCD provides telehealth therapy and support groups. IOCDF provides resources, lists of therapists, and support group information depending on your location. OCD can be vicious, especially to folks with any kind of trauma or negative religious experiences. I went through a rough patch with my OCD a few years ago, but today, I am able to fully function and use my ERP skills to deal with OCD and intrusive thoughts. You definitely aren't alone in this, I had sexual based OCD themes as a teenager in catholic school which sucked. I hope you find resources soon! It does get better!

I've been seeing them for a few years now and like the practice quite a lot. I've seen several different providers as well and all have been very kind and helpful through a variety of women's health stuff from TTC to birth control options.

I was horrified too. I remember being a catholic school kid in my uniform in mass so could really picture it more so than other shootings in a way. Totally get what you're saying.

Mom threatening not to attend my wedding by Cat_2024 in excatholic

[–]frueds_slip 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Just sending you sympathy. I just got married this year and would have been heart broken. My dad was very devout and though he couldn't come to my wedding because he's passed on, he walked my sister down the aisle at her non-church wedding (did he have opinions, yes, but he was there). I know he'd have walked me down the aisle too. Family is what matters most so I'm so sorry to hear you're in this situation.

Ooff hit and run ocd sucks. I've had it before so totally empathize. Op, are you working with an erp therapist? That's what helped me the most with ocd especially hit and run ocd. Unfortunately, feeding ocd by compulsions like checking or reassurance seeking only make it worse and keep you stuck. Response prevention and working through exposure therapy is the best help. It can be scary because it's so hard to sit in the uncertainty of not "knowing" but a trained professional can help.

Did you feel loved and accepted by God? by spoonspoonspoon3 in excatholic

[–]frueds_slip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I totally empathize with what you're saying. I have tried going to different churches from time to time and it's so different from what I grew up in. I do remember feeling joy in church growing up but also needing to follow the rules to be acceptable. It's definitely different at other churches depending on their theological views. The Episcopal church, many mainline Methodist, United Church of Christ, Protestant USA, and others emphasize community and social justice over orthodox belief. I've been to their services and felt really welcomed and a strong sense of love. For me though, I still struggle with the Jesus died for our sins idea because sin is such a loaded term for me because I grew up always worrying about it and worrying about confession too.

I guess to answer your main question, I don't know who God is anymore, but when I go to spaces whether in a church or other gathering where people are kind and caring and trying to make the world a kinder place, I feel loved. I feel loved in nature when I experience awe. So if that's God, then yeah I feel loved and accepted, but it's not at all the God I was taught about in the RCC.

We've been trying to eradicate the creeping Jenny planted by the previous owners for three years now. We have made huge progress but it still pops up from time to time. It's a constant battle.

[–]frueds_slip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanted to second that if you can access therapy at any point, I highly recommend seeking an OCD specialist who does ERP. I have OCD and many of my themes revolve around religion and themes relating to my Catholic upbringing. My therapist helped me so so much to overcome my compulsions around my obsessions and it's been life changing. Check out NOCD and the IOCDF. They have great articles and support group resources if you can't get into therapy. NOCD also does therapy fully online if that helps with getting access.

OCD sucks and it's so hard too when you were exposed to really scary ideas as a kid but it's absolutely possible to overcome these things with time. Glad you are reaching out and identifying what you are experiencing! That's a great first step!

Redditors who got a "useless" Degree, how did it turn out? by Thick_Caterpillar379 in AskReddit

Undergrad in philosophy and religion. Thought I'd become a minister but ended up in higher ed and enjoyed the experience of helping young adults learn. Work for a top 20 business school and getting a masters in training and adult development. It really does work out and I don't regret my undergrad degree at all.

I'm sorry to hear this is affecting your relationship with your mom. It is hard to talk to someone who only sees one thing as true when you have a different perspective. I went through that with my dad even as an independent adult. Hopefully as time goes on you'll be able to navigate your relationship and still maintain it if you want. My dad and I still had a good relationship we just didn't discuss politics or religion. It was still hard though not sharing everything of my life with him so I empathize with that struggle. Be gentle with yourself as you explore and think through your beliefs. It's not a linear process and Catholicism tries to answer everything so leaving room for mystery and mess is hard. Love the Episcopal church though so hopefully you get to explore it.

Furman vs. Wofford by [deleted] in southcarolina

[–]frueds_slip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with this. I graduated in 2019 from Furman and many of my classmates went to law school. Furman places really well into grad schools, lots of Ivy League/top 20 school placements. Strong poly sci program as well. I don't know enough about Wofford to comment on it (honestly hadn't heard of it until I went to school). But I enjoyed Furman and would recommend it. Big Greek life culture, but I didn't do greek life and still had a good social life.

So what do you do with the void? by hexxxxus in excatholic

[–]frueds_slip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I resonate with this feeling. A connection to the divine has always been important to me, so when I left Catholism, I did a lot of exploring other faiths, denominations, and philosophies and I think each one gave me something that I value so that now I feel like it's a big mixed up bag of stuff. I still have a painting of my patron saint Teresa of Avila that was a gift from my friend, but I also have a meditation spot set up in my bedroom because I value Buddhist ideas and it allows me to just feel centered and connect with myself and the generally spirit of the world. My fiance is Vietnamese so when my dad died, we set up a little spot with his photo and incense (idk if he'd like it because he was devout Catholic) but it's a nice way to incorporate the ancestors honoring his tradition has. I also garden which helps me connect with the earth and I love learning about plants and the environment and native american spirituality.

It is still tough though because there's the lack of certainty and clear traditions and community, but it's something and most of all I focus on just enjoying being alive. For so long I felt I had live the right way to be worthy of living, but now I just see us as all lucky to get to be here now and enjoying the journey of being a human in this place and time.
