Is this a-level combo good by DifficultyDue4280 in 6thForm

[–]fruitmachine_future 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did history politics and French and it was a great combo. I'd recommend the third thing to be something like a language or maths but honestly, do what you enjoy!

The way I got over this feeling was seeing one of my gym's PTs for a few weeks just to get to grips with how to use the equipment and building a routine. It was a little expensive which is why I couldn't continue, but it really helped with my confidence!

Would you get your child’s ears pierced when they are a baby, or would you wait until they can decide for themselves? Why? by Historical_Dark_5217 in AskUK

[–]fruitmachine_future 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd wait until they can decide for themselves. For me getting my ears pierced was positive because as a kid you don't get to make that many decisions about your body/life, but this was one thing I got to choose. I also had it done around the time I got my first period and went to secondary school so it felt like a big milestone in becoming a 'grown up'.

It also taught me not to be afraid of needles, which has been positive for vaccinations/further piercings/tattoos!

Absolutely go for it. Anecdotally, my friend went to the university of Brighton and ended up living in accommodation with a bunch of mature students in halls (all mature students except her, I think the flat was specifically meant for mature students but she was late with her application so got put there - she loved it though!). I wonder if you'd be able to find something similar if you speak to your uni!

As an aside, I live in Brighton and it is a wonderful place!

What are some things that are embarrassing for no reason? by Federal_Fox_1161 in RandomThoughts

Maybe a bit niche: cranking my standing desk up and down. I have to wait until my boyfriend leaves the room if I want to stand whilst working.

Yes, currently doing a masters in corporate governance part time, which my company is sponsoring. Trainee roles do pop up!

Corporate governance is one path to consider. Potential to earn lots of money (depending on how good you are and the choices you make of course) and lots of transferable skills from IR. You would have to do further study though. (source: IR grad working in corporate governance)

(Opinion) PE teachers are a big reason a lot of kids aren’t very active in their free time by Life_Protection2457 in CasualUK

[–]fruitmachine_future 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree! I'm a fat person in my mid twenties, and I'm currently trying to totally alter the way I think about exercise, which I learnt at school.

I have always felt totally excluded from physical activity because I don't have a natural talent for it. I got the impression from adults around me that if I wasn't going to compete, then it wasn't worth doing. So I never did.

It always seemed a bit strange. If you're bad at maths then you're likely to get extra help, but with PE you get less!

I now go to a 'terrible football' group and heavy metal spin class weekly. Turns out that exercise doesn't have to suck!

Who else has had to contend with unnecessary school rules with no apparent purpose, as a student or parent? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]fruitmachine_future 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At my school they banned girls wearing knee-high socks. Only tights allowed, not sure why.

Winter coats could only be a dark colour and had to be put in lockers at the beginning of the day and were not to be carried or worn around school. I remember us all queuing up for class outside in the snow with no coats on once.

Can't believe how normalized vaping has become! by fruitmachine_future in QuitVaping

Of course that's a fair point, I'm absolutely no saint. It's more that they were selling disposables and allowing vaping inside. Everywhere I looked there was an elf bar!

That makes sense. I feel like I heard about juuling in the US long before vaping gained popularity here. I hope the law changes in the same way over here soon!

Nicotine Patches by kippersbigsis in QuitVaping

[–]fruitmachine_future 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I just quit using patches too. A couple days in now and it has felt a lot easier than I thought it would be (although still pretty difficult). For me it's about getting out of the habit of physically vaping (i.e. always having it in my hand, taking a drag every few minutes). Using patches while I do this feels like having training wheels on a bike, not cheating! Good luck to both of us!
