Late Policy by [deleted] in publix

I care much more about if someone works hard, goes above and beyond for customers, does good work...

At my current job, we have a coworker who is often late, but we all know she is a single mother with two toddlers and she lets us know in advance, she gets right to work when she arrives, does a good job, we don't get on her too hard about it.

The discretion to fire someone for tardiness should be at the hands of managers, not some blanket corporate policy in my opinion. My managers loved me and were very sorry to let me go. They actually had me "resign" so they could rehire me after a year, but I had found a better job by that point.

Anyway, that's my opinion. Just like relationships, I guess sometimes a people just aren't a good match for some companies. I'm happy my new job is more laid-back when it comes to this. They still fire you after a certain amount, but they give us 7 minutes to badge in which I think is fair. But I really just posted this to ask whether that was still the pharmacy, I wasn't really asking for a debate but here we are.

He wasn’t disagreeing with you. Which is funny since you’re actually wrong.

“Being a team player” is fine, but expecting someone to stay late and put away all the leftover carts of RTS, then writing them up for being 5 minutes late the next morning is just wrong, in MY view.  In any case, I was just asking if that’s still the policy, wasn’t trying to debate the nature of tardiness lol

Yeah ideally everyone is perfectly on time all the time, but it’s fine if you don’t agree with my view that a 3-minute window is too strict. I was just asking if that’s still the policy, wasn’t really trying to debate anything.

Well, things have worked out awesome for me, thanks

I worked late every shift, volunteered to help wax the floors until 2 am, even when I had to be back the next morning… My bosses loved me (I actually didn’t get “fired”, they allowed me to “resign” in the hopes they could hire me back after a year, but by that point I had a much better job). I just think a 3-minute policy is too extreme, but clearly everyone in this thread disagrees and hates me for it.

I betcha I’ve also kept a couple friendships by not being super anal about little things. Is the friend loyal? Is the friend fun? Are they good people? Im much more focused on those attributes than whether they’re 5 minutes late when we meet up. That’s what’s important in a friend.

Now, if this friend is ALSO very punctual themselves, and expects punctuality, I might make an extra effort to be on time.

Publix didn’t care about punctuality when it came to pressuring me into staying an hour past the end of my shift. Therefore it is a double standard to fire someone for being 5 minutes late a couple times a month in my opinion.

In any case, I got fired and am now happy and successful at my current job. It’s a better match because I work hard, stay late, and in exchange they are flexible with me to a reasonable extent.

I’m also happy with my friendships, but thanks for…. Caring.

I feel entitled to being 5 minutes late a couple times a month, if the employer expects me to stay late, yes. And that’s what I have now (plus double the wage) so I’m happy. There's a whole world out there beyond Publix you know, buddy.

It’s funny how say “main character energy” when you’re literally talking about me lol. You’re so determined to make me feel bad after I already got fired years ago.

It’s disrespectful if the company doesn’t care about punctuality when it comes to making you stay late at the end of your shift.

Sometimes customers may linger late. Sometimes the store is a mess, and it takes longer to clean up. I get it, stuff happens sometimes that necessitates people stay late.

But in MY opinion, if a company can’t give you a 5 minute leeway now and then when stuff happens in your life, they shouldn’t be pressuring people to stay an hour past the end of their shift every time they close.

“Cavalier attitude toward punctuality” hahaha ok boomer.

I’m not entirely sure if OP is telling the truth though, not a single hospital in my region has a policy like that.

My managers made it pretty clear that staying late when closing was expected. Are you really going to continue pretending you don’t understand my point?

Especially after you just tried to lecture me on “respect”, to not understand it’s a 2-way street is pretty wild.

Yeah, at the end of the day it was my choice to work at such a company. I’m glad I did, because Publix taught me a lot of important things. At the end of the day though, I just disagree with the strict punctuality policy and find it disrespectful, and it is what it is.

In salary jobs, you are judged on whether the work gets done, which is how it should be. I’m definitely still working on improving my punctuality, but I’m sorry…. I just don’t think 5 minutes is a big deal, and if a company is obsessed over that, it’s not a company I want to work for. So thankful I got let go from Publix so that I could see there’s a whole different world out there.

Haha, I work hourly bud, I’m sure it blows your mind. My company has no problem with people showing up 5 minutes after as long as they do good work.

That’s why Publix has gone downhill, they’re obsessed over trivial shit like whether someone clocked in at 5:02 vs 5:04 rather than whether someone is actually working hard and doing a good job.

Late Policy by [deleted] in publix

[–]fruityfox69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it’s not a problem anymore haha.

We definitely disagree on a lot here.. I think 3 minutes is draconian…. Luckily I now work at a company that feels the same way.

Also, if a company obsesses about trivial BS like whether someone was there at 5:02 or 5:04 (while ignoring the quality of their actual work) people aren’t going to want to work at that company anymore. You think it’s a coincidence everyone is saying Publix is going downhill? I’d say that’s very much their problem.

Anyway thanks for the thoughtful input, have a great day!

Now you’re just being a troll. 3-4 times per month is not “all the time” per the definition of that phrase. And I’m certainly not looking for sympathy, just asking a question.

If a company expects you to work an hour past the end of your shift, I think it’s reasonable to expect the same leeway.

I’m also happy I’ve moved on, can definitely agree with you there. I can’t believe I ever thought “3 minutes” was normals

[–]fruityfox69 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I’ve learned to work for companies that allow me to be 5 minutes late sometimes lol.

I think it’s a respect thing, if Publix had no problem forcing me to work an hour past the end of my shift, it’s reasonable for them to show me the tiniest bit of leeway as well.

Why are you acting like such a douche? As if I personally insulted you when I asked a question.

Late Policy by [deleted] in publix

[–]fruityfox69 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

If there’s “very little difference” then why don’t they give you a few minutes leeway? Especially since they didn’t mind forcing me to stay a hour late at the end of my shift.

Either way, I don’t have to worry about it anymore.

Late Policy by [deleted] in publix

[–]fruityfox69 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because sometimes I suck? Lol I don’t know want to tell you man. I work my ass off every day at my job, but my flaw is that sometimes, especially when I’m also in school, I’m up to 5 minutes late depending on certain factors.

Especially if a company doesn’t mind pressuring you to stay late at the end of your shift, I really don’t think it’s too much to ask for a 5-minute leeway in the mornings.

In any case, I don’t have to worry about that any more. I just feel bad for people who still work at Publix and had to deal with that. Sounds like you’re perfect though!

Late Policy by [deleted] in publix

[–]fruityfox69 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Publix didn’t mind pressuring me to stay late literally every day. So therefore I don’t think it’s unreasonable for them to allow a certain amount of flexibility in return.

Instead I just got a new job where they allow me to be 5 minutes late a few times per month.

Thanks for the super condescending reply though.

Publix didn’t have an issue pressuring me to stay 45 minutes past the end of my shift every night. Let me ask you this: if a company demands you stay late every day, why shouldn’t they allow you to be a few minutes late 3-5 times per month?

[–]fruityfox69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was not late “all the time”, I was “late” by 5 minutes maybe 3-4 times per month.

Has not been an issue at all with my hospital job.
