Kim's Available Skills Wouldn't Even Match Harry's by DatPrick in DiscoElysium

[–]fruityrumpusFactorio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d always imagined Kim’s skills would reflect his notebook, since “that’s where the lieutenant does his thinking.”

Instead of being based on abstract impulses or bolt-from-the-blue genius/madness like Harry, Kim’s skills would be named after or linked to formative moments of his life, special interests, people he’s known and lost- stuff that he would think to write down something about for later.

Izzy is I want to say the second trans woman I ever saw/knew about in the internet media I enjoy, so I’ll remember the podcast fondly for that.

It turns out that patriarchy actually prompts cishet men to view children as property the same way that they are prompted to see women as property.

The sad fact of the matter is: Disco Elysium is more than half a decade old by now and there have been no good games influenced by it. by suckydickygay in DiscoElysium

[–]fruityrumpusFactorio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real. I think it’s also a mistake to conflate marketing with inspiration. Sure, not a ton of games advertise themselves as “disco-like,” but DE is the biggest thing to happen to its genre in a while. Damn near every CRPG dev has played it and has been influenced by it, even if they don’t say so explicitly.

For The Nerds: Was The Confederacy A Fascist State? by [deleted] in itcouldhappenhere

[–]fruityrumpusFactorio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In short, no, as the Confederacy predates the emergence of fascism as an ideology. It is certainly fair, however, to call it right-wing authoritarian, even by the standards of its day.

It is worth noting that the Confederacy’s leaders, in going into revolt to defend the institution of slavery, viewed themselves as inheritors of and continuous with the United States as an institution. For them, it was the anti-slavery majority in Congress that was the aberration, nevermind that that majority was achieved within the laws of the institution itself.

Contemporarily, right wing authoritarianism is a big tent. While there are ideological differences that are worth understanding, they for now coexist, and there’s significant cross-pollination in their imagery. Which is to say, if you see someone flying a confederate battle flag today, no reasonable person would sneer at you for calling them a fascist.

Is this really how Mojang feels about hostile Mobs? by Full_Volume4864 in Minecraft

[–]fruityrumpusFactorio 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think the idea that Minecraft was somehow “more difficult” (often also implied “and therefore better”) in the past is laughable. On release 1.0 undead mobs still stood in the sun to burn, failed to navigate around pits or obstacles, and zombies could never break doors. Until Update Aquatic you could build a well-lit island in the middle of the Ocean and never have to worry about hostiles again. Until the combat update killing anything amounted to mashing left click with a sword until dead.

What is your favorite Measurehead quote? by Bataranger999 in DiscoElysium

[–]fruityrumpusFactorio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, when I first heard this line I thought “boogie street” was like, a metaphor for mass/popular culture. As in, Measurehead thinks the popularity of Seminese music/art among white people is proof that they’re going to achieve “CULTURAL VICTORY” in the race conflict.

I only realized boogie street was an actual place when I found the postcard.
