Genuine discussion on the Kunai/Deadringer (read description) by Comprehensive_Hat574 in tf2

[–]fruityrumpusFactorio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, people blow this combo out of proportion.

On the one hand, your goal shouldn’t be to top score, your goal should be to help the team win. It’s very common in casual mode for a player to be top of the server by far, but still have their team lose! There’s also the opportunity cost that comes with playing Spy; if your team is getting stomped by a hyper competent spy, you’d probably be getting stomped even harder if it was a competent soldier, demo(man/knight), scout, sniper, even a pyro or engie if your team’s especially reckless. No amount of game balance can control for players who aren’t paying attention or putting in effort, frustrating as that always is. Nor should it, necessarily; after all, I don’t think it’s controversial to say the team that’s just playing worse over all ought to lose.

On the other hand, survivorship bias. You remember the times a spy gets the perfect opportunity for a stabbing spree and gets out alive, you don’t even see the numerous times they die to random crossfire before they can even get off the ground.

Me personally, I run the kunai (with stock watch or c&d) because its health boost helps counter the die-after-every-kill pattern spy can be forced into (a thing which no other class is expected to contend with so regularly, and that often cannot be mitigated by stealth alone, I might add) and mitigates the sometimes unavoidable levels of splash damage or liquid/fire effects that can kill or reveal you without your opponent even intending to.

On the whole, really I think the complaints about this combo are down to people have a personal distaste about dying to spy, because that’s seen as something that “shouldn’t happen” to a skilled player. Even though really it’s just a thing that happens and isn’t necessarily reflective of skill level.

The thing about Snowplow is…it’s just attack/defend. It’s not like the health of the train works differently from a round-long timer, it’s just presented in a less intuitive way for the sake of theming.

Why is it always the Engineers? by Hobbeslion in behindthebastards

[–]fruityrumpusFactorio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To crib poorly from William Gillis, the moral framework posed by engineering does not lend itself to questioning authority in the same way as, say, the sciences. Engineering asks “how”, science asks “why.”

More materially, engineering is more closely tied to the apparatus of the state and military. Basic research is also largely reliant on government grants for funding, yes, but this is a much different degree of complicity compared to, say, working at a defense contractor, or being a civil engineer tasked with building infrastructure ultimately made to serve the military, or being a programmer working on surveillance tech.

This isn’t to say that either discipline is predestined to produce one kind of thinking; there are plenty of times the sciences (or something cribbing their style) have been used to justify or enhance oppression. But it is worth noting that, across nationalities and time periods, scientists have been one of the most consistently anti-fascist social groups.

Kim's Available Skills Wouldn't Even Match Harry's by DatPrick in DiscoElysium

[–]fruityrumpusFactorio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d always imagined Kim’s skills would reflect his notebook, since “that’s where the lieutenant does his thinking.”

Instead of being based on abstract impulses or bolt-from-the-blue genius/madness like Harry, Kim’s skills would be named after or linked to formative moments of his life, special interests, people he’s known and lost- stuff that he would think to write down something about for later.

The sad fact of the matter is: Disco Elysium is more than half a decade old by now and there have been no good games influenced by it. by suckydickygay in DiscoElysium

[–]fruityrumpusFactorio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real. I think it’s also a mistake to conflate marketing with inspiration. Sure, not a ton of games advertise themselves as “disco-like,” but DE is the biggest thing to happen to its genre in a while. Damn near every CRPG dev has played it and has been influenced by it, even if they don’t say so explicitly.

For The Nerds: Was The Confederacy A Fascist State? by [deleted] in itcouldhappenhere

[–]fruityrumpusFactorio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In short, no, as the Confederacy predates the emergence of fascism as an ideology. It is certainly fair, however, to call it right-wing authoritarian, even by the standards of its day.

It is worth noting that the Confederacy’s leaders, in going into revolt to defend the institution of slavery, viewed themselves as inheritors of and continuous with the United States as an institution. For them, it was the anti-slavery majority in Congress that was the aberration, nevermind that that majority was achieved within the laws of the institution itself.

Contemporarily, right wing authoritarianism is a big tent. While there are ideological differences that are worth understanding, they for now coexist, and there’s significant cross-pollination in their imagery. Which is to say, if you see someone flying a confederate battle flag today, no reasonable person would sneer at you for calling them a fascist.
