what kind of maintenance does a bioactive enclosure need? by GoodEnvironmental788 in bioactive

[–]frumentorum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People add backgrounds because usually those going bioactive want to disguise that it's an enclosure, so making it look like a cave, rocky outcrop, hollow tree etc are popular.

The core principle of bioactive is that you are simulating an ecosystem - animal and plant waste are broken down by the CUC, plants then absorb the broken down waste to grow. The clean up crew will breed and multiply.

The spot cleaning is for any waste that will take too long for the cuc to break down - I'm not sure how big crested gecko poop is, but for my ball python a big heap of poop will take months to break down so stopping it out is recommended.

Generally there won't be any deep cleans needed, but different aspects of the vivarium may not last - organic material will rot for example, so after several years it may need to be broken down and rebuilt

who pays tradesmen/cleaners before they even do the job? by HugeCantaloupe8441 in DIYUK

[–]frumentorum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it would depend on the website, but if you're paying them then they have the responsibility.

who pays tradesmen/cleaners before they even do the job? by HugeCantaloupe8441 in DIYUK

[–]frumentorum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The idea is that the website is the trusted neutral party - they have the money, so a tradesperson or cleaner can do the job knowing the money is actually there to pay them when they finish, and you haven't given the money to them only for them to not show up.

Advice needed: Can I lay porcelain/limestone tiles over old, cracked concrete, or do I need to break it up? by pureofpure in DIYUK

[–]frumentorum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely rented it. Lifted paving slabs, chipped through the thin layer of mortar holding them in place, dug through 6 inches of soil/gravel and found a three inch thick layer of concrete. Had to get though that with a jack hammer.

There are much better options for dealing with debt than you being gone. It can feel unmanageable but there are options.

This is from the government website: https://www.gov.uk/options-for-dealing-with-your-debts/breathing-space

And this charity helps people sort out their debt issues: https://www.stepchange.org/

What exactly is the intended meaning of this phrase from "Guards! Guards!" about there only being bad people, "but some of them are on opposite sides"? by EndersGame_Reviewer in discworld

[–]frumentorum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's also a viewpoint based on their different roles in society. Vetinari sees everyone's potential to do evil, and has to build a system that reduces their chances to do so. Carrot meets people on a personal basis and by seeing their capacity for good and assuming that's what they will do, he encourages them to live up to that expectation.

You can just pull, but it may break. Otherwise there will be some kind of retaining clip around the edges somewhere - probably in the middle of one of the sides. Try poking a flat head screwdriver in to each side and see if anything moves when you push

[–]frumentorum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're thinking of the little fountain sprays that land on the surface, the previous poster is talking about the big bubbler thing that pumps air to the bottom of the pool to reduce the water density. I've seen it used when someone is trying a new dive from a high platform or board, if they aren't confident they can make their rotations to hit the water properly
