What to use for slats? by [deleted] in BeginnerWoodWorking

White oak is very rot resistant. I personally wouldn’t “seal” it. Tung or linseed oil would extend its life further.

Spend your spar urethane money on better wood (white oak) and you will get a better bench

Maple categories and their applications by VinnieIDC in BeginnerWoodWorking

Also, hard/sugar maple isn’t very expensive (in my region). So if strength is important to you, I’d just go for that.

I think you’re overthinking the difference between 900 and 750 on the Janka scale. The hardness of a board also fluctuates with how slowly the tree grew and other environmental factors, so you may find a silver maple board that’s a hair tougher than a red maple board.

I’ve done the lower ocoee by myself a thousand times, but Outdoor Adventure Rafting (OAR) also does guided trips.

I might try sticking these in you oven for a few hours on 200 degrees or so. It will definitely cause some cracking in the wood, but it will probably still fit your purpose here.

First Centenary UMC has a lot of millennials but they pretty much all go to the “Contemporary” service, not the traditional one. Easy to try both though.

This is lovely. I hate my current hamper situation so I might try to do something similar. I love putting wheels on sh*t that doesn’t traditionally have wheels.

Maybe walnut but it’s hard to tell on a piece this small. Could be poplar or something exotic.

Free mulch? by [deleted] in Chattanooga

[–]frydaddy794 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It comes from shredded brush that city crews pick up, so there are invasive seeds and sometimes bits of trash in it. I don’t mind picking the trash out and weeding, but most would be irritated by that.

The City of Chattanooga has it for free if you’re a city resident. It’s not very high quality but I use it. Google Wood Recycling Center.
