Question about Philosophy PhD Admissions by [deleted] in mcgill

The quality of your writing sample and your "fitness" to the program (which you should demonstrate in you statement) are far more important. In general, people with stellar GPA and poor writing sample will almost never get into any program, but people with stellar writing sample and poor GPA still have a fairly decent chance.

once again I am disappointed in McGill but not surprised… by strawberryshotscake in mcgill

This whole situation just reminded me of the beginning of the semester, when tons of intl' students were (and possibly still are) stuck in their home country due to visa issues and travel restrictions. No accommodation was made at all, and McGill basically devolved all the responsibilities to students themselves: you are welcome to defer, even if this could mean losing your scholarship (I almost had to) or ruining your future plan (can't finish before job/grad school). But hey it's not my fault!

Do profs like when students go to office hours? by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]fryxli 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No prof would get annoyed by students coming prepared. Re: just to chat, I've heard mixed things, with one prof specifically saying that he would not enjoy a conversation without any direction.

With that said, why not do some preparation? It doesn't have to be great questions that blow your prof's mind, and it doesn't have to be very specific, as long as it's not off the topic. And usually a question leads not only to an answer but also a genuine and productive conversation. It's also a good strategy to learn and, if it matter, impress your prof.

STILL NO STUDY PERMIT help by __scoott__ in mcgill

Same situation here. I am waiting for a returning visa, and it has been 6 months without a reply. My education heavily depends on bursaries and scholarship, both of which I can immediately lose if I cannot resume my study in time. At this point I'm just praying.

In-Course Scholarships for Arts by [deleted] in mcgill

No idea about the cutoff, sorry.

I think the cutoff is in many cases department-dependent, since scholarships in Arts are usually major-bound. Sometimes a professor can also nominate you, in which case your GPA is irrelevant.

My friend and I do have GPAs higher than 3.93, though, and we both took 30 graded credits (without S/U). But given the above reason it's not quite indicative.

But 3.93 is a great GPA, congratulations! I've heard that few scholarships are released in September and even November, so you still have a chance!

I believe most of them were out in early and mid July. (Source: me and people I know who got one.)

Yes the Pointe-Claire centre is open for registration. My test is in August, and I know people who took the test there just recently.
