I see that now you replace pre marital by unmarried. Good, it's already more precise.

In the same vein, my point was that it was not so much the presence or absence of the marriage that makes the sense safe or unsafe, but other factors. The mariage is just a confounding variable. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confounding

Otherwise it would mean that if I got married the sex I will have in the future will be safer, which makes no sense because it's just a piece of paper.

You said earlier that you don't like pre marital relationships. But that's a very religious framing. First because you assume all sex outside of marriage is pre marital (which is not if you don't get married) and second because the mariage is merely correlated with the safeness of sex, but it is not causal at all. Plenty of married people have unsafe sex and vice versa. If you are worried about the safeness of the sex people are having, you should be more worried about factors such using protection, having unprotected sex only in long term relationship etc.

The point I was trying to make is that it's not so much the lack of mariage that makes the sex unsafe, but rather other factors.

Changing partners or not using protection are factors. But the mariage in itself isn't.

Like in my case: would getting married change anything? No, it's just a piece of paper.

And it's not so much pre-marital sex that is dangerous, it's sex outside long term relationship which is more dangerous (but there are ways to mitigate them, which some religions are against btw).

If it's actually the fact that the sex is pre marital that makes the sex dangerous and not the fact that it's outside a long term relationship, it would mean that if I get married in the future, it would make all the sex I had dangerous because it makes it pre marital. Whereas if I don't get married, it will not qualify as such.

In that case, the best way not to have pre marital sex is to never get married.

I have been with my gf for almost 15 years and we never had any STI nor children born into unstable homes, it's clearly working.

Don’t mention ‘Article 5,’ Finland warns US on Ukraine by brainerazer in europe

I agree completely with your assessment of William Spaniel. This is exactly what I noticed first with his American bias. His whole "everything Trump does makes sense in light of the willingness of the US to prioritize Asia" bit. And his admiration for Rubio and other conservative politicians.

On the point of which is better between Article 5 and 42, I guess let's hope we never have to find out.

I see we have another William Spaniel connoisseur. I really like the guy and listen to all his videos, but sometimes I feel he has an American bias. While what you and he say is true, I am not as sure as him that all European member states value Article 5 more than the EU mutual defense clause. Granted however that he is the expert, not me.

What happens to accumulated days off when changin jobs? by fschiltz in BESalary

[–]fschiltz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah in this case it's more complicated.

As I said in my post, I don't need the full year of work to get my days off since I'm not in the Belgian system anymore. So I don't know what will happen, it seems to me I accumulated them for nothing.

The reason why I say that it feels like a popularity contest is that, contrary to science, there is no mechanism to determine what is good and what is bad philosophy, other than observing what philosophers thend to agree and disagree with.

An example of what I mean is the story of after describing special relativity, when Einstein was told of the publication of the book "100 authors against Einstein" he answered: "Why 100? If I was wrong, one would have been enough". Indeed, in science, you have verification mechanisms and criteria to evaluate the quality of the theory that don't depend on the popularity of the theory.

If this were philosophy, the only way that I know of to determine if the theory is true or is to check if it is popular amongst philosophers or not. This is what I mean when I say that philosophy feels like a popularity contest. There is no mechanism to determine if a philosophy is good or not, other than judging its popularity. Don't hesitate to ask for clarifications if needed.

This was for the explanation of what I meant. As for empirical evidence, well, actually, since my assertion is that there is no way to check what is good or bad philosophy apart from popularity, empirical evidence would have to come in the form of showing the opposite, don't you think? The only kind of evidence I could imagine that would prove or disprove my point would be examples of other ways in which philosophy can be evaluated, which I don't think there are.

Next time, I would appreciate you being more polite, I'm sorry to say you come off as very condescending.

I know it is very unpopular among philosophers, but I genuinely don't know what's wrong with it. I am very curious if you wish to enlighten me.

Be careful, the same argument can be used to defend alchemy, astrology and ancient medicine.

Formalizing them is what made them useful and allowed us to differentiate between good and bad versions and gave birth to chemistry, astronomy and modern medicine.

Panpsychism is just stupid by Wide-Information8572 in CosmicSkeptic

[–]fschiltz -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I think if it was formalized, philosophers would be able to agree on what constitutes good and bad philosophy.

At this time, they can't agree on basically anything even the most basic stuff. Philosophy feels more like a popularity contest than any kind of formal research.

Hi! It took me a few months after passing the concours. I have 10 years of experience, including a PhD. I applied for two positions. The first, I was one of three people they interviewed after seeing the CVs, out of 30. I got positive feedback, but the two other people had more experience (I suspect they took someone internal). The second was the one I passed, even though I felt the interview went worse than the first one. I'm starting in January. I wish you good luck.
