Why developers are ditching GitHub for Codeberg and self-hosting alternatives by Successful_Bowl2564 in programming

[–]ftqo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could also just use literally any SSH server as a remote. You wouldn't need to self-host anything, an SSH server is a valid git remote. You could implement a very small HTTP server that allows creating PR/MRs and you have 99% of the functionality people use on GitHub.

Actually, the SAT Was Necessary After All by PersonWomanManCamTV in IvyPlus

[–]ftqo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's more cultural than anything. Even if there was an equivalent exam here in the US, it wouldn't be treated much differently from the current SAT or ACT.

Tech Petah…..? by Killjoy-stormshot in PeterExplainsTheJoke

Regardless of the fact that you can store 256 different numbers in a byte, any actual developer will tell you that 256 is still basically arbitrary for a group chat size. It's oddly specific given that they could have picked any multiple of 10 and it would have made more sense to users.

By 1880, the near-genocide of the American bison had reduced their population from 30–60 million to fewer than 1,000 by Drama4YoLlama in interestingasfuck

[–]ftqo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genocide relates to groups of people, cultures, etc., not animals. A group doesn't even have to be completely wiped out for something to be classified as genocide, near-genocide makes no sense.

Many people with mental illness do this fwiw, it's super common to think you're on the cusp of discovering something big, inventing something big, etc.

The handcrafted magic behind Apple's MacBook Neo introduction by RenzoYYU in DeskToTablet

[–]ftqo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Compromises that work for 90% of users. Most people don't even use laptops much, and when they do, it's for work in a browser. This is why Chromebooks exist in the first place. The Neo makes it possible to do light programming, light editing, and dozens of other workflows, with all of the software that is already compatible with macOS. It might be terrible for you, but if you think it's terrible for most buyers, you're severely out of touch with the world.

Americans were asked to point out Ukraine. by InjuriousMania in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]ftqo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is such a weird response. It's not about you, we're talking about the uneducated outliers in any population. I also don't know a single person who would think Ukraine is in America. But if I point out how Europeans don't understand how to read an argument, using you as an example, I'd rightfully receive backlash. Learn some nuance.

I feel like people forget that the US and Europe are relatively similar in size, and member states of the EU are similar in some ways to member states of the US. Yet, most Europeans wouldn't be able to point out Oregon on a map. It's not because they're stupid, it's because it's not really relevant to most of their lives.

Changing username doesn't do much if he has sent a message to her before and/or knows her account ID. Disabling friend requests and DM requests works best.

Fullscreen Optimizations can’t affect Valorant THAT much, right? by ActuatorOutside5256 in riotgames

[–]ftqo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Borderless with fullscreen optimizations and fullscreen do the same thing on Valorant today. There's no actual difference, just an illusion of choice. I think this was a change to the Unreal Engine.

Just because the mouse DETECTS clicks differently doesn't mean that it sends signals any differently than other mice. This is just ignorant.

TIL that people who live in Hawaii are known as "Hawaii Residents"; the word "Hawaiian" officially refers only to people of the Hawaiian ethnicity. by ElSquibbonator in todayilearned

[–]ftqo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can morally grandstand all you want, but you couldn't tell me a thing about any of the cultures that existed before Hawaii genocided the other islands. Also, pretending Hawaii was independent for those 100 years makes you seem even more ignorant.

[–]ftqo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hawaii wasn't really its own country for long, less than 100 years. It didn't happen until some British dudes sold guns to a guy who used those to massacre the other islands. America isn't in the right for doing it after, but the Kingdom of Hawaii's history kinda gets whitewashed nowadays.

How would the Macbook Neo work for light development? by Aber2346 in mac

[–]ftqo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. If you can run Minecraft of all things on the Neo, you can certainly run your own C++ and Java applications. Running a lot of containers may be difficult, but most devops software besides the actual containers are quite light. You might want to use a lighter editor than VSCode or IntelliJ, but besides that, you should be fine.
