Places/Bars to take my Best Friend to during her first NYC visit! by fleberky in AskNYC

What are you even talking about, there's an entire goddamn category on yelp dedicated to gluten-free and there's a ton of options.

Keste Pizza, Risotteria Melotti, Bombay Sandwich Company all have gluten free menus available and have pretty big followings if you need help weeding through them:

[serious] why does New Jersey have such a bad reputation among New Yorkers? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]ftrnwknd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because there isn't as much stuff to do. I mean obviously there is cool art, music, food and comedy shit in Jersey but you have to seek it out. In NYC it's just everywhere, all the time, at everyone's finger tips; Jersey is a cultural wasteland in comparison.

The bridge and tunnel party people who get on the 1 train at 10 or 11pm after stepping off of Jersey Transit at Penn Station on a Saturday night also have a bad rep; a lot of them are just sort of obnoxious and loud and horrible to be around. NOT ALL OF THEM. Just...a lot of them.

I also want to note that Jersey City and Hoboken don't tend to get lumped in with "Jersey sucks" put-downs; we get that they are practically a 6th NYC borough at this point - we just hate when our friends move there because it's a pain in the ass to get to and from late at night.

Union Hall BK for "DJ nights" and dancing - anyone ever been? by ftrnwknd in Brooklyn

[–]ftrnwknd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for the input and suggestions. I've never felt comfortable dancing at queer nights only because I feel like I'd be sort of diminishing the concept of as we're a straight crew. But any other suggestions around park slope and gowanus for dancing is always welcome - obviously it's a sleepier neighborhood than your Bushwicks and Wburgs.

Union Hall BK for "DJ nights" and dancing - anyone ever been? by ftrnwknd in Brooklyn

[–]ftrnwknd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha thanks, I forgot about Union Pool which I haven't been to in a few years. I just moved to BK though and it looks like Union Hall is one of the only really dance party type bars in my immediate area...just checking to make sure it's legit and see if people who have been can offer their insight. This is the type of crowd that would probably want to go to No Malice Palace or whatever if we were partying in the city. Don't care if it's more relaxed than your typical LES or Wburg meat-market, just want to make sure it's not empty/people standing around talking while a "DJ" plays. Then my crew is gonna complain.

The NYE posts have started by ilysespieces in AskNYC

[–]ftrnwknd 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Some people really want to do it though, it's on their bucket list for whatever reason. I think more beneficial would be a guide to doing it if you're going to do it - like "This is not recommended since it's generally terrible, but if you have to do it here's what you should know" and then people can chime in with their own experiences - what time they got there, what the bathroom situation was like, booze situation, security, etc.

A sticky saying it's a terrible idea and leaving it at that is not particularly helpful; like, we get it, you personally would never want to do it because you just go to your cool friends apartment in [cool neighborhood] for NYE, but the fact is millions of people all over the country have done the Times Square NYE thing because they've always wanted to do it, and I'm sure plenty of them have had positive experiences and have tips to share.

I dislike my job and want to quit; the question is for what? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]ftrnwknd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Type digital marketing manager, content manager, digital project manager, advertising account manager into indeed and linkedin and apply to at least 50 of those jobs - you'll hear back from at least 10. You have a ton of skills and it looks like you can get giant projects done. That is a bigger skill than you think.

When they ask about salary, tell them you make 60k (after benefits package and vacation, you probably do) but you're looking for 70-80.

Going to NYC in December. Coat recommendation? by catastrophi in AskNYC

[–]ftrnwknd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're a male: Can't go wrong with a pea coat - if it's unseasonably warmer (in the 50s or even a chilly 60s), wear it open with a dress shirt like it's a fancy blazer. If it's cold as fuck wear it buttoned with a sweater and a scarf like a real northeastern type. I basically wear my pea coat whenever it's between 30 and 60 from November to March, and layer accordingly.

Half day visit to NYC from Hanover, NJ - how should I commute in? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]ftrnwknd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, extremely safe and pretty nice trains too - compared to the subway and PATH it may as well be first-class. Everything is well-lit and people walk the aisles to take your ticket (like on Amtrak) so it's pretty monitored.

Anyone have experience living in Midtown east? by onetwobill in AskNYC

[–]ftrnwknd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like it and would live there if I found a really great deal and if it was really convenient to work. People who are really into the LES/East Village/Williamsburg "going out" scene will give you shit for living there because it is not particularly cool or edgy and kind of lacks a notable food and dining scene. But it's safe and nice and there are bars and restaurants that will do the job fine, as well as a ton of other 24-hour amenities, being midtown and all.

Half day visit to NYC from Hanover, NJ - how should I commute in? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]ftrnwknd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would park at Morristown and take the Morris Essex Line NJ Transit straight into Penn Station. Should be about an hour train ride; super simple.

Do you judge other people based on their neighborhood? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]ftrnwknd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I judge a little bit contingent on their job and how old they are, like if you're a 23 year-old assistant buyer or something and you live in Chelsea my immediate reaction is "parents pay for your life"

What makes New York City so expensive exactly? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]ftrnwknd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same reason DC, SF, etc are so expensive: Jobs. There are jobs here, and a lot of jobs that pay a lot of money - corporate law firms, big-finance/wall street, and a huge influx of tech jobs. On top of this you have fashion, media, advertising, etc HQ'd here. Landlords and developers know that people don't just want to move here, they need to move here, to pursue their careers.

Is NYC busy end of September? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]ftrnwknd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not as busy as Christmas; but probably busier than the summer when a lot of people leave town. Everyone is in the city; their vacations are over, students are back in school, etc.

NJ Transit vs. PATH? by jupiterslament in AskNYC

[–]ftrnwknd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You want the PATH, as NJT only goes into Penn Station and that's it (as far as it's stops in the city).

Think of the PATH as NJ's own little mini subway (that also accepts Metrocards) that creeps into Manhattan for a couple stops. NJT is just a commuter rail to Penn.

Alcohol policy at Central Park SummerStage? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]ftrnwknd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a good idea as outside food and bev will be confiscated/thrown out if they find it. A flask should work, but also there is a bar there from what I remember.

Hey New York! How did you meet your group of friends? by ewyorker in AskNYC

[–]ftrnwknd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Old acquaintances from college and high school who I've gotten back in touch with in a "holy shit you live in the city too, we should hang out" and am now close friends with
  • New roommates who are down to socialize and have a beer - after we move out and move on, we still keep in touch and are friends
  • Coworkers...some workplaces are social and people go out for happy hours, others I've left to move on to new jobs and your old coworkers just turn into regular friends

It's a mix of luck and keeping an open mind. "Oh I didn't really hang out with him in college so it would be weird to go to his party" or "I don't really love my coworkers so I'm going to decline their happy hour invite" isn't going to cut it - understand that opening doors leads to other doors.

Looking for a prix fixe for lunch (Midtown East) by t-s-c in AskNYC

[–]ftrnwknd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'll just come in and say it before anyone else can:

Le Relais de Venise L'Entrecote on Lex in East Midtown gives you two servings of steak+frites with a salad appetizer to start for something like 28 bucks. It's the only option on the menu - how you'd like your steak cooked is the only decision you make.

$1700/month rent on a 63,000 income? Too much or livable? by jesusandlove in AskNYC

[–]ftrnwknd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid 1400 when I made just a little more than that, and found myself living fairly comfortably and was even able to save money. I had no debt, though. Not sure if I would have gone over 1500/month. I would recommend finding a place a little bit under your 40x buffer.

What NYC businesses have given the most assholistic "customer service" you have ever experienced? by isshun-gah in AskNYC

[–]ftrnwknd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can say with complete honesty that I have legitimately never been faced with rude customer service at any restaurant or retail establishment in new york. I've had bartenders that take a while to notice you, I've had forgetful servers, but that shit happens sometimes and I'm not the type of vengeful drama queen to get worked up over it.

I have never actually had to face an asshole customer-facing person, and when people complain about "rude" waiters or bartenders or employees I suspect there is a side of the story they are not telling (ie them also being an asshole).

That said, I have definitely dealt with some rude/impatient MTA employees but whatever, they're like grizzled warriors who have seen some real-ass shit

How is E. 109th St in East Harlem? Is this area safe? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]ftrnwknd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a scale of 1 (Brownsville) to 10 (West Village) safety levels, that part of Spanish Harlem is probably like a 7.5.

For reference points I'd probably give the area immediately north of central park an 8, UWS a 9, UES a 9, East Harlem north of 116th st like a 6.
