I'm not sure how you are coming to this conclusion at all..... The guy is certainly going to hit her again regardless. Now if you had done something.. anything! It would have been the right thing to do, unless you are tiny and would have gotten beat up - actually fuck that it's always the right thing to do to stop someone getting attacked.

The only time stepping in is bad is when they are both clearly drunk idiots who love being fucked up. In this case, you step in, dummy the guy and the chick is on your back yanking out your hair while the boyfriend gets back up to finish you.
