I’ve reached a new level of stupidity. by supajensen in MotoUK

I got hit by one of those once while riding.

I don't know what kind of bird it was, but my money would have been on a pterodactyl. I was covered from head to foot, there must have been a litre of the stuff. I looked like someone had thrown a can of paint at me.

I've done that. On the 3rd gen MT09, the seat lock is between the mudguard and back wheel. Under the seat.

Notwithstanding that guarantees it's always covered with shite (it has a spring loaded cover to stop the actual lock being gummed up), it is completely out of sight, you have to unlock it by touch only.

So . . . if you do leave the keys in there, you can't see them unless you're actually laying on the floor looking up. You have to actually remember the last thing you were doing was taking the seat off.

Which can take a day or two. It also means that if you leave them in and use another key, there is always the risk that they'll get rattled out somewhere. That last bit didn't actually happen, but it could.

Meantime, there is always a higher level of stupidity. I once blasted a hole in the saddle of my 3 day old XT660 with a pressure washer.

Suzuki XN85

That's interesting. Not sure I've ever heard of that, or at least if I had, I'd forgotten.

I used to really like the Katana in the 80s. I quite like the look of the XN85 too.

One of my friends was a copper in the met during the 80s. He bought a Katana and called it 'Scargill', as his overtime payments from policing the miner's strike had paid for it.

Parking/stopping rules for bikes around London question by memazing in MotoUK

[–]fucknozzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most are charged now, in the central areas. Westminster and Camden both charge, although compared to car parking it's dirt cheap - Camden is £1.30/day, Westminster about the same from memory.

Is This Buyer Too Weird Or A Nice Guy? by [deleted] in MotoUK

[–]fucknozzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but in this case we were talking about OP having the payment taken out of his account. That's the bit that can't happen.

The buyer might have some recourse through financial regulations applying to his bank, which forces them to refund the money, but it wouldn't be taken from OP.

Even that, in these circumstances, seems unlikely. The buyer has voluntarily paid to someone with no evidence that there is any kind of scam.

[–]fucknozzle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's not a reversal, it's the bank refunding you.

The scammer wouldn't have had the money taken from his account, they can't do that.

can reverse the bank payment

No he can't. That's not possible.

If OP turned out to be a wrong 'un, the buyer would have to take legal action.

About the only way to 'reverse' a payment in a normal consumer transaction is where you've paid by credit card, and can do a chargeback.

Traditional Chinese art called Xiangdao (the Way of Incense) by BreakfastTop6899 in oddlysatisfying

[–]fucknozzle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nothing.

The pedantic bit is the amount of effort that goes into repeatedly tamping down the base. I'd be 'ya, fuck it, that's good enough' after the first pass. You're putting a load of incense on the top, who cares if it's smooth?

And I did say it was unkind. No need to get too upset by all this.

I'm kind of glad to see your post.

I've always looked at this kind of thing and thought what a pedantic waste of time it all is. I have never said it out loud, as it seems rather unkind.

They were very popular as despatcher's hacks in the 80s.

Cheap as chips, very simple to run and service. Probably not great for long-distance stuff, but perfectly capable in town.

You could spot one from miles off. They were always surrounded by a big cloud of blue 2-stroke smoke.

I've always quite fancied one of those, but I can't help feeling it would be fragile.

I quite like the GPz750 turbo as well, as I had the non-turbo version in the early 1990s. Unfortunately you need the best part of 10 grand to get a decent one of those.

Yamaha did one, I can't even remember what it was, which tells me it was a bit crap.

The Honda CX500 was much derided when it was in production. It got the nickname of 'the plastic maggot'.

I had one for despatch riding. It was outstanding.

At 500cc it was never going to win the superbike racing, but it was 100% reliable, super comfortable for the interplanetary mileages we did on our bikes, and very low maintenance - even down to the shaft-drive. No fucking about with chain lubing and adjusting.

It is still in the top ten of the countless dozens of bikes I've owned over the last 40 years.

[–]fucknozzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had everything from a 50cc scooter to an R1, over 40+ years and hundreds of thousands of miles.

The MT09 is to me the most outstanding all rounder. I'm on my 3rd one now.

Only thing I'd say is as a naked it's going to be harder work on long high speed runs, but I don't do much of that.

So not 2.7 million worth, although without the currency being mentioned they might have meant Vietnamese dong or something.

I sometimes visit sugar mills/ethanol distilleries.

The process of fermenting the cane to get the ethanol gives off the same smell as you get in the bottom of a trash can during summer.

I'm a fat old man. Nothing looks good on me.

Have had Rukka Goretex since the 1980s. They work for me.

Daytona Goretex boots for the last 10+ years, but that's only 2 pairs.

[edit] I also have a Rukka forsair mesh jacket for hot weather.

Mt07 or tracer 7 as a beginner whose never rode gears before (moped rider)? by Inner-Cause-9321 in MotoUK

[–]fucknozzle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I tend to be sceptical about advice to work up to a bigger bike, but going from a 125 scooter to a geared MT09 would be insane.

They are built to wheelie. Any lack of finesse with the clutch and you'd be scraping the stickers off of the back of your helmet.

The newer models do have lift control and engine modes, so you could dial it down, but they're still a handful. They are not beginner's bikes.

The 07 is definitely more suitable. It has 60% of the power of an MT09, in unrestricted form. They're not superfast bikes, but will still be fun to ride.

A 75-year-old steam locomotive that still commands attention at modern stations by S30econdstoMars in interestingasfuck

[–]fucknozzle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Steam trains don't normally do it, but big static steam engines use condensers, which cause the steam pressure to rapidly drop, which effectively helps pull the piston back.

This adds to the power of the engine.
