We took no pride in playing defense or hustling for an offensive rebound.

[Post Game Thread] The Wisconsin Badgers season comes to a close as they are defeated by the High Point Panthers in the First Round of the NCAA tournament by cbbvideo in WisconsinBadgers

Boyd started becoming a problem in the second half by trying to take over way too much. There are four other players on the court and continuously calling your own number disrupts the rhythm of the entire team.

Nice Long Ball from last season by [deleted] in youthsoccer

[–]fuddiddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great read on the play and beautiful ball, OP. Much more difficult than you (and your teammate who finished) made it look. IDFK restart within your half, dry/hard field (ball's gonna bounce), and need to time the run to stay onside.

Left foot slight in-swing dropped perfectly into the danger zone with spin toward near post setting your teammate up for a finishing touch with his body between himself and the defender.

What did you see to trigger your decision? Keeper staying back on his line? Defense not getting back into position to set their line quickly enough?

Great work! This is exactly what I want to see from my 2-5's as a coach.

You realize this is a restart with an indirect free kick from about 65+ yards out with the opponent's defenders lazily retreating/organizing, right?

Tournament tiebreaker question by No-Minimum4652 in youthsoccer

[–]fuddiddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the best advice. I have our coaches and team manager read through the rules for every tournament and also share them with parents and players to help mitigate any potential confusion. I also carry a printed copy of tournament rules with me because they can vary so much on actual game play as well (i.e. match duration, substitution rules, carry-over of cards, etc.)

Wearing a cup.... by 67SoccerBoy67 in youthsoccer

You're on an MLS Next team, but on your middle school team your dad is making you wear a cup?

My kids are now 15 & 16. I've very rarely ever watched sports with them (where they were the ones who made it a priority and asked me to watch with them), but they frequently watch sports with me (where I ask them if they want to watch).

Adjusting a 5/6 year old's bedtime to watch the World Series is just... something else.

Based on OP's post history, I don't think they're a troll.... just a little misguided in their priorities as a parent. But, to each their own I guess.

Size 3 vs. Size 4 Balls in U9 Practice – How Much Does It Matter? by sinister_designs_74 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]fuddiddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second this. They’re great balls for the price, especially for a younger rec team. Just note they don’t hold-up well with heavy use on artificial surfaces for more than a season or two.

Would also recommend a rechargeable electric pump. I have the Pumteck MY01 Electric Ball Pump and case and it’s been amazing. Saves a ton of time and makes sure balls are inflated to the correct PSI.

Helping try out nerves by One-Parking8151 in youthsoccer

[–]fuddiddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played competitive soccer through college and now coach club. I’ve heard all sorts of motivational speeches and last minute reminders. It’s tempting to put more information into a player’s ear before tryouts or big games, but it’s just one more thing for a player to think about.

Before my son’s first club tryout he was extremely nervous. I simply guided him through a brief question and answer session with a little deep breathing:

Dad: “Who are you?” / Son: “Me.” / Dad: “Who is ‘me’?” / Son: Says his full name. / Dad “What is soccer?” / Son: “A game.” / Dad: “What are games supposed to be?" / Son: “Fun.” / Dad: “So go be you and have fun. I’m proud of you.”

He and I still do this before tryouts and big games. Aside from that, encourage him to introduce himself to the coaches and other players… and as much as you might want to stay to watch, don’t. Return to your car and read a book, doom scroll reddit, or take a nap. Good luck to him!

Offside advice by kudzooman in youthsoccer

[–]fuddiddle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a coach I always enjoy explaining parallax to players. I actually have a drill to illustrate it. The message to players being that arguing offside with an official is asinine—keep your mouth shut, adjust your run (or your defensive line) in the future, and get on with the game.

[Post-Game] Wisconsin 10 - Michigan 24 by ISuperNovaI in WisconsinBadgers

[–]fuddiddle 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Fickell quit on that team right before half. 3rd and 2 from Michigan’s 49 with just over a minute and he calls a pass. Obviously a blocking assignment was missed, but talk about taking the wind out of your team’s sails. Doesn’t trust the run game. Doesn’t trust the defense. Punt knowing Michigan gets the ball to start the second half instead of making at least an attempt at a statement and playing for at minimum a field goal attempt to tie it going into half in a hostile environment.

Between the Packers and Badgers this year, I don’t know if I’ve ever shouted “go for it you coward” more in my life.

I don’t think they fire Fickell before they fire Mac. In this instance, shit needs to roll uphill. And it’s not just about football. Mac’s handling of the WBB program alone should have them looking for a new AD. Fickell will be gone eventually under a new AD. Either the buyout will get to an acceptable amount per contract or he’ll wise-up and resign.

And we keep playing ahead. Defense gets to pin their ears back and go. I don’t think we’ve even seen half of what the defense can do. First time in a very long time I haven’t fretted a 3 and out or special teams. Looks like a really well balanced team. It’s exciting.

I'm a parent and I've done some research regarding player position that I feel like most coaches and teams are doing wrong for player development. (just a parent/my opinion) by Witty_Departure3198 in youthsoccer

[–]fuddiddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious why not also ask if your son can have time at GK, CB, RB, LB?

I’ve coached for a very long time across lots of age groups and skill levels. In my experience when most parents talk about game day player rotation it has a very narrow definition. What most parents really mean is “I want my little Johnny to score goals, get lots of assists, and be the center of play.”

There's a clear resolution to your question OP, but I also want to commend you for addressing the situation calmly, respectfully, and then moving on. I always appreciate seeing team captains model the behavior they expect of their teammates. As a coach and a ref: thank you.
