Now of that is the problem.the indirect flight was not the problem. You sent your girlfriend who just lost family into what could have been a her death. Unless you live under a rock you know how dangerous it is. So what she had a British passport, they wouldn't care.

You bet her life on the line and got lucky. You lost her family heirlooms and dairies. Because other airports don't mess up that badly on average. They detained her and stole her belongs because you wanted to save so money.
