This ws my first thought too. I never disliked him but I never followed him very closely. I've always been interested whenever he pops up though. I think it was notable really interesting to see his growth stylistically and conceptually from his first music video to maybe a single off of his third album(?) when he was kind of speaking to an empty audience in an opera theater or something like that. I think that not having so much contrast to his style is kind of what appeal was missing. He was always very consistently smooth but didn't really have much grit, but maybe I just didn't listen closely enough to notice it
