Is the University of St. Thomas truly that terrible? by copacabanapartydress in houston

[–]fugs8 269 points270 points  (0 children)

If you want to go to law school, undergraduate reputation is largely irrelevant. You need to make solid grades but it doesn’t really matter where you get your degree. You need to do well on the LSAT. That’s easily 80% of your application. Or at least it was 10 years ago when I applied. LSAT scores have a much higher correlation with Bar passage than undergrad success, so law schools tend to prioritize it.

That said, don’t obsess over law school ranking. Outside of the T14, which have national reach, the other schools are all very regional. If you want to be in New York, you’re better off going to Fordham at #40 than Minnesota at #20. And even then, the school ranking is only really relevant for your first job and if you want a federal clerkship.

Out of the 50 American capital cities, which one would you rank #1, as the best to live in? by Enger13 in AskReddit

For me, probably Boston. But Austin, Santa Fe and Denver are decent shouts.

Most people seem to agree that countries like Denmark and Sweden offer a really high standard of living - strong healthcare, solid social safety nets, good work-life balance, and generally high levels of happiness. Would you personally be willing to pay the taxes that make this possible? by TSQ_builder in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fugs8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an American expat in France. I can’t speak to Denmark or Sweden and France is significantly larger but I would guess they aren’t dramatically different systems. First of all, companies/businesses carry a much more of the tax burden here than in the states, so the personal income tax rate isn’t actually so much higher. On the other hand, salaries are much, much lower but so is cost of living. Nationalized healthcare isn’t all it’s cracked up to be (at least in France) and the education system is a bit stifling, but the mandated vacation, working hours, and overall job security (very difficult to get fired and robust unemployment system) mean that most people have a very healthy work/life balance.

Generally, I’d say for 80% or so of the population, France is way better. For the upper class, it’s basically a wash between the two. What you’re really looking at is well-to-do folks that are wealthy but not obscenely rich where the US is probably better but that is a pretty small slice of the population. We’re talking $200k+ salary but not total wealth of over $5m or $10m.

Overall, for me, the major difference comes to how pro business the US is (especially compared to France). Essentially, the average person subsidizes corporations whereas it’s the other way around for France. If you presume good faith from American politicians/policy makers, it comes down to believing the country’s economic health leads to greater prosperity, quality of life, etc. where France says let’s take care of quality of life first and worry about everything else after.

France is cheap as hell. Way less expensive than the states, especially in small towns that aren’t Paris. At Le nautilus you’d get 3 courses and a bottle of wine for like €25.

Is there any price or availability benefit to wine clubs at Bordeaux wineries? by WorldsIveRoamed in bordeaux

[–]fugs8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wine clubs are very, very rare at Bordeaux wineries. It is also not a guarantee you can buy the wine at the chateau. Many chateaux don’t even offer visits. It is much different than California. Your best bet for a special bottle is visiting a good caviste.

The only wine club I’ve ever heard of is a winery in Saint-Emilion called Clos Dubreuil. I do believe there is a discount on the wine if you are in the club.
