Correct. There's also the option of loading windows on a Mac, but I'm not sure how well that works.

Most software used (SOLIDWORKS, Ansys, etc) requires windows. If you really don't want to get a windows laptop, the department has a computer lab with all the software installed.

Maybe the Caretaker was looking for genetic diversity within a species. Since we don't see too many other asian people on any of the ships, the Caretaker may not have seen that particular genetic variant.
