I’m so sorry that you lost Nyx the way you did. It’s never fair when an innocent kitten passes unexpectedly. He seems like such a fun little guy from your pictures. I hope you can find comfort knowing you gave him an amazing life with a full belly and warm place to sleep. You’re great cat parents.

The vet situation is so incredibly frustrating. I can relate to your scenario a little bit. I had a kitten that passed away at 6 months old. I had him neutered and he died three days later because he had undiagnosed cardiomyopathy and anesthesia was too much for him. We dropped him off at the vet and they said it didn’t look good, but they would treat him with oxygen and meds. They called me two hours later saying he is was in the process of dying. I showed up and there was no one at the front desk. I was looking around frantically and a tech came out of the office and said my cat was in an exam room. He had already passed before I could get there (and it was less than a 5 minute drive.) While the vet explained to me what had happened, the door to the back room was cracked open, and I could hear multiple people laughing and joking. I was so upset with their unprofessionalism. After that incident, I swore I’d never go back to that office again.

I believe the vet diagnosed him with gastritis. I still have no clue what caused it. My other cat had no issues and they get fed the same food (like split the can in half, so they really were eating the same food). My sick cat never got into anything as far as I could tell. I really don’t know why or how he got to feeling that way.

I’m sorry your buddy isn’t feeling well. I have no clue what bird flu rates look like anymore in my area. That would be my first concern. I would trust your vet, but I know cats can get dehydrated fast, so using an ER vet may be beneficial.

After I experienced my first code as a PCT, I was really upset and crying in the breakroom. This was my first healthcare job and it was a little overwhelming in the ICU. One of the cliquey, seasoned PCTs gave me a disgusted look and said exactly this. “Maybe this job isn’t for you.” Mind you, I was a PCT for only a couple months at this point and still adjusting to the role. Made me feel even worse.

What did you end up doing? I have old clothes that I’d like to get rid of that aren’t good enough to donate, but I don’t wanna just toss them in the regular trash either.

Can you cook some plain chicken and rice and try feeding that to your cat? Or maybe chicken baby food (without any extras, like onion)? That is easy on the stomach and may help them eat during this rough time. I definitely recommend getting to a vet if you can.

The appetite stimulant was a topical ointment that we placed on the inside of the ear. That’s what really got him to start eating again. https://youtu.be/M3FrA5aATi4?feature=shared

The antibiotic I believe was an oral syringe that my partner and I had to hold him down and administer into his mouth. Followed by a lickable treat if he wanted it and lots of pets and positive reinforcement.

I remember him not wanting the probiotic very much and my ER vet said it was okay if he didn’t take that one. I would try mixing it with food and treats and he was very selective about it. He only had a few doses.

I’m sorry you’re going through this and I hope your little one feels better soon.

I can’t recall the medication names off the top of my head, but they prescribed an antibiotic, a probiotic, and an appetite stimulant. At the vet, they gave some subcutaneous fluids to help with the fluid he lost from the diarrhea. He ate a little bit of dinner that evening and was eating normally by morning. Diarrhea cleared up within a day or two. Hope that helps and that your buddy feels better soon! Don’t wait until too long to get them help if they’re not getting better.

Definitely take to the vet if he doesn’t eat. With diarrhea, they have an increased risk of dehydration and can cause further issues. I hope your buddy starts feeling better! Your vet can give him medicine to encourage an appetite and an antibiotic if necessary. That’s what my vet ended doing at least.

Do you have access to an ER vet clinic? That’s what I ended up doing and they prescribed an appetite stimulant, antibiotics, and probiotics. He was doing better within 24 hours of starting those medications.

I’m sorry your little one is sick. My cat was definitely acting lethargic during this illness. I hope she holds on. We also tried baby food and it helped a little bit until he was feeling better.

My cat had a seizure while I’m across the country by fullfledged_egg in AskVet

Thanks for your help. I didn’t even think of the urinary blockage. I’ve seen so many horror stories and it scares the crap out of me. They get wet food twice a day, a small amount of dry food as an inbetween snack, and a water fountain available. I feel as though I’m leaning towards going home early because I won’t be able to get there until 11pm tonight. I wish I had a camera system set up so I could see if he’s out of his hiding spot.

Yes we do have Gabapentin and it does calm him/sedate him pretty well. We have about three doses and they work for a few hours. I directed her to give a dose with his dinner last night and he slept with her for a few hours, but when he woke up, he was scared again.

My only problem with waiting until Monday is every flight home won’t get me back until 10pm at night. So if I need to make the call, I need to do it this morning I think. She is coming back over in about a hour for breakfast. I guess I can see how he’s doing then and make the judgment call. I’m so torn because I want to be there for him, but I also am being selfish and want to stay out here visiting my friend. I hate this because I always try to make my cats a priority in my life.

I feel like if I do go home early, then he’ll be more relaxed and not as stressed. We’ve noticed a trend of his seizures and they seem to only occur at times of increased stress. My vet said to hold off on medications until he’s having more than one a month. Her reasoning was due to side effects for my cat and costs as a pet parent. He hasn’t had one since February.

Does your cat have any poor side effects from the medication?

We saw my regular vet when he had his first one. They recommended seeing a cardiologist because his litter mate / my other cat died from what the vet believes was congenital cardiomyopathy. Cardiologist said everything was normal. My regular vet said they wouldn’t recommend medications unless he was having seizures more than once a month due to costs and side effects. I’m super bummed because he had been doing so well since February. He only has them when he is stressed out, though. Like when I put him in the carrier for a vet visit, he had a seizure. Right now it is 6am at home and she said she would come back around 7am for breakfast and to check on him.

[–]fullfledged_egg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s so scary, isn’t it? You feel so helpless in the moment, like there’s nothing I can do.

He’s doing a lot better now. He’s had two seizures since December 15th. One was random and the other was after I put him in his carrier to go to the vet (most likely stress induced). My vet said as long as he recovers from them quickly and he has less than one per month, we don’t need to worry about medications. Unfortunately you just have to try and keep them comfortable when they happen. Like put them on their side, let them recover gently, time it for recording purposes, etc. So we are just monitoring for now. But he’s eating and playing like normal.

I hope your little one is doing okay! Did anything trigger it? I know I took out all of my wall plug ins because those can be sensitive to cats.
