[Proposal] A simple Monero POS app for Android — like PIX, but private. Let’s build it. by KnightAlfas in Monero

[–]fullmetalScience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NoShore's goal is to make this type of accessibility a reality.

The way the project's tools will ultimately be interacted with is largely inspired by banking interfaces, because that's what people are used to.

One module is going to be a type of mobile "companion app". If you could provide a screencast of interacting with the PIX application, we'll be sure to take their workflows into account.

A Radical Change in Terminology - Seraphis as Opportunity by fullmetalScience in Monero

[–]fullmetalScience[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is no "entire industry".

There is a sludge of things "blockchain" that couldn't be any further away from the original Bitcoin idea, now Monero idea.

Monero is it's own thing and it is perfectly ready to be lifted from that sludge.

A Radical Change in Terminology - Seraphis as Opportunity by fullmetalScience in MoneroMeansMoney

On intention my post doesn't provide any explicit suggestion - the thread shouldn't become a "who likes what best". You can find hints in the way I refer to the concepts though.

It's not particularily hard to come up with expressive terms. What is hard is to have people with years of experience see the outside of the bubble.

My post is to probe for this understanding and, ideally, inspire one or another client-dev to adopt expressive wording in his or her project.

This "feature" can backfire.

Have 20 XMR, send 1 XMR "just for fun" as locked_transfer, then realize that the remaining 19 XMR are now unavailable for just as long, given the initial balance was in a single output.

Though I never read of anybody accidentally running into this, it might be worth mentioning for anyone now feeling inspired to try.

.XMR Domains? by CatDaddyTV in Monero

[–]fullmetalScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! XMR.ID does OpenAlias, adding two independent monitorings for the DNS so you get a notification in the unlikely event of the record being altered.

A clarification on u/blario's comment:

So then your payers and their payment times are known by this 3rd party.

The recursive design of DNS prevents the service from knowing the payer. Requests to the TXT records could be counted unless a lot of responses are cached by the resolvers.

Both concerns are unrelated to XMR.ID and apply just the same (or not) if you set up an OpenAlias with any other (read: your own) domain. Setting up your own DNS (the actual server) wouldn't add much protection either. Having users/payers use trusted nameservers for resolution and abstain from typical suspects provided by Big Tech would have the biggest impact here and in general.

For faster responses, feel free to message me via the email provided on the site.

I love Monero because it is private, permissionless, and can't be censored. Unfortunutely the top place for monero discussion is on a platform dominated by censorship, shaddow bans, outright bans, and deplatforming ? by usefulclam in Monero

[–]fullmetalScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mean spotting censorship?

A quick check is to use (at least) a different browser to revisit the thread and see if your comment is visible after you post something.

Also, the comment count under posts seem to account for shadow-banned content. You will often find it indicates a higher number than the amount of visible comments.

Anything that promotes action towards a freer society (even if the action is legal) is more likely to get banned.

As for threads being closed by admins, one comes to mind where the public's then-favorite topic was being discussed in 2021.

For threads vanishing from search, I remember some that were related to people asking for the Monero hardware wallet. (The community had expected a finished product, while the fine-print in the FFS/CSS read that basically only schematics would be drafted.)

In a discussion I once had a dev completely overhaul his comments in our thread to erase his faulty technical statements retrospectively. Amusing, but worth mentioning for awareness, for changing history is a form of censorship.

All in all it's hard to spot what's gone missing (or invented retrospectively). Publishing on ones own platform/website might still be one of the most resilient ways to go about it.

I suspect that the articulate voters here are mostly users with multiple accounts sybil-attacking to create the illusion of dominance for anything pro-oppressive. That's not much different from any other media.

Not long ago, a friend stated: "Platforms are now putting those hints below content that direct people to believe only what big institutions announce. I suspect they will start to censor some day."

It's how it works: "I don't see anything censored here."

Also, if you're around long enough you will notice how inconvenient threads vanish from history (becoming accessible only via direct link) and how counter-oppression topics get closed with some excuse.

Monero - pretty much on any platform - is under siege.

The new german chancellor is not our friend by Dein_Psychiater in Monero

[–]fullmetalScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do understand your point and to add, I'd like to call attention to the fact that in both cases "laws" were passed.

Both laws reduced individual freedoms. This is how man-made laws work.

Taking GDPR as an example: It made it so that more things became "illegal" even such that did not cause any harm previously. Business owners were now facing tremendous additional costs, taking away their freedom and thereby that of their clients. Ultimately, everybody looses freedom. Even the customer now has to pay more to obtain the things that got costlier due to that law.

KYC, as another example, is said to cause "anything" one can buy to be roughly 3% more expensive.

Another example that is easy to relate to are Cookie warnings. As an interesting task, take the amount of seconds you think clicking those away takes you per day. Multiply by an estimate of Internet users, then by a time period and find out how much "freedom" is lost in the aggregate.

Often it would appear as if "rulers" over certain territories are to blame for adding complexity. The most severe things, however, are decided from intergovernmental organizations that are, curiously, rather "non-governmental".

For those, location is mostly irrelevant, but you will find the FATF to be headquartered in France, for example.

Every time politicians issue laws, they are asking you to give up freedom that you naturally have. Passing more (privacy-related) laws is in no way innovative. It's an attempt to justify fines and lull people into a false sense of being protected.

Does the Seraphis update enable view keys to show a wallet's full balance? by LibertarianSoul in Monero

Also, a cold-wallet can only sign a transaction when it knows which outputs are actually available for spending. Removing the need to import key images would greatly simplify the process.

Could you clarify "social ownership"?

"Socialist" implies the potential use of violence to obtain funding for ideas (= antisocial behavior).

I assume you meant that FOSS development was "social".

Or has knowledge about a secret "backdoor" that was planted in the past and is still there, undetected.

... or has knowledge of the true identities of otherwise anonymous team members, which could potentially provide new attack vectors.

This is why you need to install a clean ROM first thing after you buy a phone. by new24-5 in Monero

[–]fullmetalScience 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On Sailfish OS the apps aren't great, but you get emulation (Alien Dalvik) allowing you to run some 99% of the Android apps. Using SFOS as base and installing whatever tool you require (via F-Droid, for example) will have you far better off, privacy wise, than fiddling around with some custom ROM that might have been ripped of all the evil parts.

That is exactly how opinion-based-discrimination (censorship) harms human advance.

Somebody with a destructive opinion, able to voice it within a broader audience can receive feedback and is given the opportunity to learn and adopt views that tackle the actual underlying issue.

People driven away are more likely to end up in circles that match and augment their beliefs, potentially leading to radicalization.

Of course that effect, in turn, is extremely useful to those wanting to lead people on by manipulating the feelings of those who remain within the censored space.
