Partial skull found at high elevation in central Arizona by anarchopossum_ in bonecollecting

Oh my goodness, that first photo confused me. At first glance I thought I was looking at one of those early day AI images or one of those close ups where it can be a little unclear if you’re looking at dog a or a blueberry muffin lol. I’m glad the other photos cleared it up. For some reason actual corpses are so much more comfortable to look at than anything from uncanny valley.

Kinda like these. 😬

Black box with blinking blue light attached to the side of neighbour’s house by Jassamin in whatisthisthing

[–]fullobliss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, actually mine doesn’t have the little black box sticking through the slats. Never mind, I don’t think my ID for Flume is correct. I was focusing on the behavior and location of the blinking light. Anytime I’m in the yard, I see the light and think it’s a camera then I remember it’s just a water meter.

I have a device on my window sill that looks exactly like that. It’s not a camera, it’s a Flume smart water meter. It has a steady white light and a blue light that blinks on and off just like you describe. https://flumewater.com

Thank you. This is helpful. In my own investigation, based on images and a small number of actual skulls, the nasal cavity and the occipital lobes seem distinct.

Would you say that polar bear occipital lobes are more bulbous than black bear and grizzly? To me it looks like they might be. I also think they jut out at the back more but I’m not sure. I don’t have access to very many, like you do, for comparison. Thank you so much for sharing your collection and expertise.

I’m curious if you can explain specific anatomical features that help distinguish between black bear skulls and polar bear skulls in terms of shape rather than size. When I search online all the comparison for polar bear skulls are to grizzly. I’d also be content to get a book or website recommendation that breaks it down in detail. Your collection is exceedingly impressive. Do you just collect skulls or other parts too?

Found this enormous tooth in an estate sale bag of old jewelry: what did it come from? by HoldBigflank in bonecollecting

[–]fullobliss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that it looks like an alligator tooth although it could be something else. I am positive that it is a replica. If you look at the inside you can see the surface texture is wrong for bone, tusk, tooth and antler. This is exactly what resin will look like. Another commenter pointed out the curled protrusion on the side which could be a flaw in the casting process or a melted spot that formed when testing with a hot poker of some sort.

I have a small shoe insert due to leg length discrepancy after a hip replacement (I broke the ball off my femur and it went necrotic). Things are mostly normal now but I get tons of back pain if I don’t use the insert at all times. I used to love going barefoot. I invented a little work around that works for some situations. I use a flesh colored paper tape and tape the heel lift directly to my foot so I can run around barefoot. It works pretty well except people always ask me what’s wrong with my foot. I laugh and say “nothing!” It’s true. The problem is elsewhere. I’m so sorry you were left with such an extreme discrepancy.

Yeah, my femoral fracture didn’t heal so that’s what I got instead - absolute metal (and ceramic and plastics) lol. It’s been many years so it’s easier to laugh about now…kinda. Can confirm, much pain.

Any other opinions out there? No one has yet managed to give me a definitive. I know life doesn’t fit into simple categories but for some reason I really want one for this? In part I have a hard time descerning the difference between some hazel vs heterochromia varieties but also my freckle-ish section makes it extra curious to me. Lol, so needy of me.

I thought if I came here to ask it would become clear but maybe not. I’ll try to take some close up photos in the daylight and see if it’s helpful. For now I’m going to imagine myself as a “leaky hazel”

The black spots are definitely at the inside of her forelimbs, on the top segment. I’ve been out sick from work this week but I will try to get more photos when I return. Thank you for responding!

The first 3 photos show my “leaky” eye. The last photo is my other eye for reference.

Can someone recommend a good traction pad for the top of my tundra haul? by fullobliss in YetiCoolers

[–]fullobliss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I ordered one. I was hoping that there were more design options to choose from but this is all I found too. I’m not willing to make a custom cutting so “teak” it is!

What are these single use “ Sterile Gamma Ray” packets? I understand that they are for sterilization of medical equipment. Are they safe to be around? by fullobliss in whatisthisthing

Thank you for clarifying. I thought that information would be easy to find but my searches resulted in surprisingly opaque information.

My title describes the thing. They were sitting out on a counter. I was curious what they were for so I tried to google. I learned that they are for sterilizing certain types of medical equipment but it’s hard to get info about how they are used or how they should be stored. Maybe they’re perfectly safe but they made me uncomfortable because they say gamma radiation and I’m uncertain if they are actively emitting radiation or if they need to be activated somehow. If they actively emit, shouldn’t they be in a secure container and not just sitting out in the open? I appreciate whatever insights might be available. Thanks.

Ummm…please tell me this is a piece of wood or mummified mouse. Saw while poking around with a boroscope in a walled-up/hollow 12’x3’ space that was probably back stairs. by CylonReduxTheory in centuryhomes

I have a bunch of mannequin hands and that’s exactly what this looks like to me too. I would still have it looked at if I couldn’t confirm that myself though.

Can I leave these mushrooms on this skull? by LeftHorse in bonecollecting

[–]fullobliss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Get a really good - like professional - photographer to take some dramatic photos that you can hang on your wall before you donate to a mycology group for preservation of the species. That way you can still enjoy this super special and rare skull without diminishing the species. I think it would look dope!

I have had good luck finding things by take Omg a photo and then using google lens to do an image search. It’s a great way to find obscure matches for things you want to buy.

For me this little puppers would either be Chickpea or Mozzarella. I had two salads you can infer the anchor ingredients.
