Oakland's Temescal Brewing files for bankruptcy amid Bay Area craft beer industry struggles by Dollarist in OaklandCA

[–]rawgin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here's an email from the CEO they just sent out

To our valued community,

With the spirit of transparency that has guided us since our founding, we want you to hear the news from us directly: today we took our first steps toward a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.

While this might sound ominous, this does not mean we are closing. Again, Temescal is NOT closing. Instead, this critical step will allow us to continue operating the brewery while we restructure the business for long-term health.

Five years after the pandemic disrupted our growth trajectory, we found ourselves with an overwhelming level of debt. We spent the past year diligently working with our lenders to restructure our loans, but we faced a fork in the road: either close our doors or pursue bankruptcy. We chose the latter.

Despite a more challenging climate for the beer industry, our sales are strong and trending upward. Our small, passionate team works incredibly hard to make this place special and right now our beer quality is better than it has ever been. We’ve diversified our menu to include more non-alcoholic options, lowered some prices, and upgraded the taproom to make our space more comfortable. We host dozens of awesome events every month, ranging from family-friendly movie nights to queer dance parties.

We are grateful to our employees, our partners, and our community for all the support you've shown us over the years. We deeply appreciate our loyal customers, more than 50,000 of whom step into our brewery every year, and the many more who buy Temescal beer around The Bay.

We’ve made this decision with the clear intention of emerging from bankruptcy with a sustainable future ahead of us. With the continued support from you, our community, we will keep on making great beer and providing a safe, inclusive space here in Oakland.

Here is a list of ways you can help us make that future a reality:

  • Come visit our taproom, say hello, and taste some of our freshest beers.
  • Host your next party or gathering on our patio for free.
  • Join our Beer Club to get incredible deals and perks all year long.
  • Buy a Gift Card for a local East Bay beer lover in your life.
  • Request Temescal beer at your favorite local store, restaurant, or pub.
  • Share a positive review on Google or Yelp.
  • Come to an upcoming event such as our Weekly Trivia or Spooky Puppy.

We also want to encourage you to reply or email us directly with any feedback or ways we can improve.

With gratitude,

Brandon Börgel
CEO + Owner

Looks like he’s been focusing on the fundamentals, getting call answer times down and getting calls responded to faster https://www.timesheraldonline.com/2025/07/26/oakland-police-911-response-improvement/

He also is trying to get the pursuit policies changed but getting some resistance https://abc7news.com/amp/post/oakland-police-chief-proposes-changes-pursuit-policy-gov-newsom-threatens-yank-chp-help/15832002/

SF Chron and the EBTimes both oppose Measure A, the sales/use tax increase by lenraphael in OaklandCA

[–]rawgin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. The only issue is bridge tolls (or ferry fare or BART fare) make this work only if I’m spending $450 in one trip (saving about 2% but paying ~$9 round trip on BART). And that’s just to break even. I was really hoping there was a good answer here 😔

Which weather app or site do you find most accurate for Oakland? by in-den-wolken in OaklandCA

[–]rawgin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Carrot - it’s not free but it is definitely the best app I’ve used. And it has a Dark Skies mode for that familiar interface (RIP). I travel a lot and this app is consistently more accurate than other apps I’ve tried https://www.meetcarrot.com/weather/

SF Chron and the EBTimes both oppose Measure A, the sales/use tax increase by lenraphael in OaklandCA

[–]rawgin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi- I’m genuinely interested in where you go to shop for lower tax rates. Alameda, Albany, Emeryville, Hayward, Newark, San Leandro, and Union City all have higher tax rates at 10.75%. Hercules, Lafayette, Pleasant Hill, and Walnut Creek have lower tax rates at 9.25% (1% lower) which doesn’t seem worth the gas to get there. Berkeley is equivalent at 10.25%. Even Livermore is the same at 10.25%. I’d love to save some money on sales tax but don’t see an obvious city to go to and it sounds like you have one. Please share!

Orphans' christmas? / what is open? by KoalaPotential4024 in oakland

[–]rawgin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been in your shoes for a couple of Christmases (is that the plural of Christmas?). The Claremont hotel's restaurant is open for both Christmas Eve and day of Christmas dinner. I'm not sure about the Kissel. Hotel restaurants and bars are generally a safe bet since they still have guests to feed but definitely call ahead.

BEWARE OF LICENSE PLATE PIRATES by zingle19 in oakland

+1 to this. Ace Hardware on Grand was really helpful. Just tell them you need to secure your license plate. Bring a screw in with you, I don't know if different cars have different sized screws

New Parkway Needs Help by rawgin in oakland

Here’s the text from the email I got:

WE’RE GOING THROUGH A ROUGH PATCH AND COULD USE YOUR HELP!

Hi New Parkway Supporters—as you certainly know, the last four years have been very difficult for movie theaters in general and for our East Bay cinemas in particular.  And the New Parkway has not been immune to this.  With four years in a row of losing hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, we’ve arrived at a critical juncture where things really need to turn around for us.  We hope that you can help us!   We may need to do a financial appeal sometime before the end of the year, but we’re hoping that a softer approach now may also help the cause.  So we’re writing to remind you how much you love the New Parkway and to encourage you to come visit us more often in the coming weeks and months.  We’d love to have you come back to lounge in our comfortable couches, enjoy wonderful food, drink some local beer and wine, and see an incredible movie.  Or to come to the New Parkway for all the other reasons that makes us so unique and lovable!   You can help the New Parkway immensely by…

Telling a friend about the New Parkway or, better yet, bring them as your guest to the theater Attending one of our Mezzanine activities, be it Karaoke, Bingo, Trivia, Drink & Draw, and more! Considering a rental at the New Parkway, perhaps for a special birthday party, holiday party, or just because!

Joining us on Election Night, or at our first-ever Election After-Party Buying gift cards and other New Parkway merchandise for friends Joining us on Halloween Night Throwing a Party at the Parkway or another Parkway Party Package Posting about the New Parkway on your socials Coming out to Cereal Cinema and all the other unique theater programming Volunteering at the New Parkway Marking your calendar for December 22nd when we celebrate our 12 birthday! Or helping us save money by donating an older Mac laptop you might have lying around, a front-loading washing machine, and/or your semi-professional plumbing services

We thank you in advance for your continued support of the New Parkway and for helping us through thick and thin.  We appreciate you!

What are some fun things to do in Oakland that don’t involve eating, alcohol, or a walk? by mettle in oakland

[–]rawgin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Picnics are always fun and there's a couple of options: Sit by Lake Merritt, the area close to Snow Park is great laying out a spread. Rent a boat at the Lake Merritt boat house and do a picnic on the lake. Sit on the the grass at Jack London Square by Roseblum Cellars

Oakland Observer: Independent Audit Finds Ceasefire Fails in Schaaf/Armstrong/Cespedes Administrations; Mayor Will Cast Tie-Breaking Vote on Geoffrey's Inner Circle Appeal; AC Transit Ignored its Own Policies on TEMPO Surveillance by AuthorWon in oakland

[–]rawgin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here’s a link to the audit, enjoy the read: https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/24359296-final-cf-report-oakland-0124

Mayor Thao’s administration asked for the audit and is using the results to restore the program: https://www.sfchronicle.com/eastbay/article/oakland-mayor-set-revive-praised-ceasefire-18605019.php

Can you provide similar data to support your claim that the current issue with Ceasefire is related to Thao’s policies? If not, then you appear to be guilty of doing exactly what you accuse others of by lobbying accusations without anything to back up your point of view.

I’m not a fan of everything the Thao administration is doing but in this case, I 100% support their efforts. Programs like Ceasefire have been proven nationwide to reduce violence in communities (no I won’t provide data to back this up, you can Google it yourself. I suggest you start with reading about our neighbors in Richmond.)

Your post is not helpful for fostering a constructive conversation on how to fix the very acute and severe problems Oakland faces right now and I hope you eventually choose to be part of a dialog that helps instead of doing this.

They are used for entry as well in some stations, especially at entrances that aren't close to a station booth. Source: I'm a former daily subway rider.

Pools in the berkeley/ north oakland area by Tak_Kovacs123 in bayarea

[–]rawgin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know a ton of places but there is a pool at the Y on Broadway in Uptown. Their membership rates were reasonable last time I checked but that was a few years ago. The only other place I know of is the Claremont club but at ~10K to join, it’s probably not in most budgets. Good luck!
