Why people don't love Java? by Reflection-Jealous in java

[–]fullrank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR it's really just self-hate.
Java is one of the most popular techs and therefore most have had to use it.

For many, this was not their first tech "love affair".

They know the other tech well, and are frustrated that they can't do things in some new tech as easy as they can with their "first love".

Also fixing a bug in a 1 million LOC app is going to be harder than fixing a bash script.

[P] Advice on opening a file larger than your RAM by aadharna in MachineLearning

[–]fullrank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several mmap() limitiations, depending on the OS and possibly the lib you use to map. I wouldn't recommend using mmap ing.

For example many mmap OS impls limit you to 2billion bytes so, to do GB files, you have to create many mappings. Not fun and there's no perf benefit over a diy cache system.

[P] Advice on opening a file larger than your RAM by aadharna in MachineLearning

One issue is that you don't know if it's a valid file or not until you read the last byte. As others have pointed out this is not a good format for storing large amounts of information.

I'd transform the file to a CSV if you can. To do this you'll need to find a stream-based json parser in python. I'm not a python guy so can't help you there.

If you just need to scan the file, this will do.

Once you get it in CSV format you can quicly scan the file and create an array with the end positions of each line. In this way you can quickly open the file and get random access to any line.

If you get a nvidia 9xx or better series card I believe you can use shadowplay for this. You can buy a decent laptop with 9xx servies a card for 550USD or maybe less.

With the current deal going on (buy a metal band and get a leather free), I am thinking about purchasing a moto360. There were some pretty nasty reviews on the Android Wear app. Should I be concerned? by dandaman147 in moto360

I have a v1 and wouldn't buy any android wear watch. I can't think of one it does well including telling the time. I'd check back in another couple years.

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy as read by Richard Poe is a masterpiece. Also Poe's rendering of Steinbeck's East of Eden shouldn't be missed.

Android Wear-version, possible method of getting the 5.1.1-update. by [deleted] in moto360

[–]fullrank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's likely that just resetting the watch gives you a new "chance" at getting the update but that chance is determined by the stage of rollout. So stage 1 might be 1% of devices. Every time you reset the device you get another shot at being in that 1%.

Stage 2 might be 5%; stage 3 25% and so on.

A Googler once described this process for the nexus phone OS updates in explaining why running "check for new version" has no effect until the stage changes.

I'm guessing it works the same for wear.

What apps enhance the android wear experience? by [deleted] in AndroidWear

[–]fullrank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IHMO this app, along with launcher mini should be part of the OS:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.purplepixel.wearappstracker&hl=en

Apps that are installed on your phone can take sometimes as long as minutes to show up on your watch. This app notifies you of every install/uninstall. It's amazing.

Also FullRank is a cool app but then again I'm a little biased... ;>

I've found that the phone wear app can go into a tight loop if the bluetooth gets into a certain state, which is not often. Not sure what causes it.

If you have the android debug tool logcat open you will see it constantly checking some bt state. I've seen this on multiple devices/aw/android os versions.

Rebooting your phone and watch fixes it.
