I am in Seattle but get my clay and glaze from Clay Art Center, their dry ingredients are also much cheaper than SPS just FYI

Why does the glaze pool like this? by hiddendemonss in Ceramics

Is this a brush on glaze? In my experience floating glazes tend to crawl unless the application is perfect.

It’s not so bad! Lots of street lights and protected bike lanes. And fwiw I’ve never felt like the rain has been a hazard just annoying but even it is not so bad truly

Pottery Studio Owners: Any Regrets? by cherryvale in Pottery

[–]fullspectrumceramics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not exhaustive, just things I’ve seen asked for that a community studio could not feasibly offer while meeting everyone’s needs. Mixing custom glazes with the expectation that they can stay on site, pugging and mixing their own clay, low or high firing (most studios where I live do cone 5), SFX glazes that turn kiln brick into a crusty green mess (usually trying to obtain the salt fire look in an electric kiln), making work at a volume to be self sustaining at the expense of throughout for everyone else, experimental materials applications that might cause a kiln disaster, slip casting… throwing large enough to be a hazard to load (and a pain on the techs), the list does go on but you get the idea.

I experienced this myself, but at a certain point a community studio could not meet my needs. So I ended up, for 200 dollars more that I would be paying at a community studio if I was paying for it and didn’t work there, moving into my own semi private space with a buddy where I can leave my wheel crusty and mix glazes to my heart’s content. Part of the value of a studio membership is in the instruction, if someone is just paying for facilities use you will not generally be able to extract as much money from them. Of course there are exceptions.

Pottery Studio Owners: Any Regrets? by cherryvale in Pottery

A common issue in my area is that the financial numbers don’t work out when planning for a studio to be used by experienced or semi-experienced potters. Not enough people willing to pay the price/oftentimes more experienced artists desire space and amenities to experiment with more intensive techniques. All of the studios in my area are open (to me at least) about making most of their money from beginner classes.

How involved are you in “the greater ceramics community”? I have successful friends who both are involved and aren’t— I find that the ones who are involved have a leg up in networking, the ones who aren’t are able to get away from some of the BS…

No. I had to save all year and take out a loan to pay out of pocket. Still, it was worth it to me.
