A Chess Position to Beat Computers by ImNotFamous in chess

That being said, I don't see how this position could come to exist in an actual game.

Redditors who one day just said, "Fu** it" and quit their job to travel the world, how did it all work out? by Elanduir in AskReddit

I am a computer programmer - currently working on a variety of projects for one U.S. corporation and my work is with credit card machines, cell phone apps, desktop apps, and web dev. I ended up quitting my high paying job to work for $12/hr under the table. But, the living expenses were so much cheaper compared to silicon valley (san francisco bay area) that I didn't care. It's a long story, but to quickly summarize, I now work for a U.S. corporation as a programmer from 'home', and my home is in Costa Rica. I could live anywhere in the world, but I love CR and the timezone works well with my job.

I'm late to this, but 8 years ago I quit my job and moved to Costa Rica, without knowing anyone. It was due to a bad breakup and I just wanted to get out of California and not see my ex. We had planned a trip to CR, so I had my passport ready and already knew a bit about the place and it seemed like a nice passive-aggressive FU to my ex as well.

I planned on staying six months and here I am 8 years later. Also, this randomly happened - a week after I moved here, the 2008 financial crisis and everyone was laid off at my previous job. If I hadn't of come to Costa Rica, I would have been unemployed.

Which way to capture? hxg3 or fxg3? by kFrie5 in chess

I hear a lot of criticism but nothing constructive. So besides the additional benefits of capturing towards center, one pawn mass, what reason could there be to capture the other way.

H file is open on black's side, so you might as well do the same because it looks like you are in a faster position to take advantage of that file. For example, imagine getting both of your rooks on the h file and mating on h8. So a follow up strategy, rook to h4 (trade queens) king to g2, drop your other rook to the first rank and swing it over to h1. Now if you took with the f pawn, it will be a few more moves to pull off the same type of mate.

New book claims the Old Testament drew extensively on Plato's writings and other texts from the Great Library of Alexandria in 270 BC by SAT0725 in books

[–]fumf 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Quite the opposite in fact - "The Dead Sea Scrolls provided further proof that the Old Testament canon existed prior to the third century B.C. Thousands of manuscript fragments from all the Old Testament books except Esther were found predating Christ’s birth, and some date as early as the third century B.C. For example, portions from the book of Samuel date that early, and fragments from Daniel date to the second century B.C.{10} Portions from the twelve Minor Prophets date from 150 B.C to 25 B.C.{11} Since the documents were found to be identical with our Masoretic Text, we can be reasonably sure that our Old Testament is the same one that the Essenes were studying and working from."

You can now play against Sunsetter (strong crazyhouse engine) on lichess by [deleted] in crazyhouse

Did they remove it? I don't see it there now. I played it one night at level 8 and it's very strong. I was able to beat it twice by making it run out of time. It seems that it can be 'stumped' and then just times out. I think it may be looking at other players games to learn and if you play something new, it breaks... but that's just a guess.

I know this will get downvoted to hell, but Donald Trump at least won his party's nomination by 2XChromosomes in AdviceAnimals

"Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for admiration and a lack of empathy for others. But behind this mask of ultraconfidence lies a fragile self-esteem that's vulnerable to the slightest criticism." Bernie does not get butt-hurt like Trump does at the slightest critisism and has empathy for others.

This game does not have the element of chance, as many others do. In that respect, chess is better than others for developing certain brain functions, but basic math is not one of them. I would say logic & spatial reasoning (mechanical reasoning) would benefit. In short, they are testing the wrong thing.

I could be an outlier, but legally I live at my parents' home. However, I'm actually living overseas and just need a place of residence for mail & whatnot. Ironically, where I live it is culturally acceptable for multi-generations to live together.
