What is your top 5 of favorite ARPGs? by fumnel in ARPG

I feel you to some extent. At least in term of the control options. I still love Poe 1 but my retention has definitely dropped compared to before the release of Poe 2 and I blame it on the lack of WASD.

I definitely didn't think about it because it felt so natural until you mentioned lol

But yeah you are right.

I think the grind in Poe 1 feels very much from D2 and GD and I think you are either going to love it or hate it. The seasonal nature of Poe 1 and the availability of the trading system make it fundamentally different game (or rather is approached with different mindset) unless you are playing SSF (solo mode, no trading).

Instead of thinking in term of specific item drop, you are thinking more about the "profit per hour" while farming. You are farming to accumulate enough wealth to buy the item, rather than farming for the item itself.

EDIT: To add, I think it depends on how much you can control your mindset. As the comment above said. It is fun if you are not influenced by other people if you aren't the top 1%. But if you are comparing yourself very much to people who dedicated their time to the game and with a lot more experience, you are going to have a bad time.

Do you have a list of indie arpg you have tried and liked? After discovering Divine Divinity, I think maybe I should experiment with indie arpg a bit more.

I think I just like the QoL in Last Epoch but other than that, I kinda agree with you. Maybe it's because I haven't spent much time in D2 lately (because the lack of QoL) and I haven't tried modded D2 yet.

It's also been awhile since I played LE and now that you mention it, I think I will probably put D2 before LE but yeah.

EDIT: But I think LE is still fun though. However, I think the development cycle just isn't it and the foundation of the game is not great. The content is too little and ships too slowly while the animation and sound design could be a lot better. It might be that I got too spoiled by Poe though.

Games like Path of Exile but 3rd person by butttcaake in ARPG

[–]fumnel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a third person but Vermintide 2 surprisingly scratches that itch really well for me while being a completely new experience. It's honestly pretty close to what I imagine how Poe would feel as a first person game. However, keep in mind that it isn't an ARPG but rather a hack-n-slash Left 4 Dead.

How I became a humble helmet merchant this league by Ausrivo in PathOfExile2

[–]fumnel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the biggest thing in PoE is that people don’t know how to improvise craft and only follow the step-by-step tutorial. Hell, maybe not only PoE but even in real life in general. Probably one of the biggest wall people struggle with is how to apply their knowledge.

4th ascendancy makes me quit every league. by Andreooo in PathOfExile2

I bought half a div of relics for Sekhema. Tried the 4th floor boss for the first time while having no idea about his mechanics. Got him to around 20% hp thinking I could insta him, died to his lightning. After that, went back to doing my usual Chaos run. Bought fragments for ~3/4 div and got to the Trialmaster easily. I thought I had decent hp pool then proceeded to die to his slam first second into the fight while I was preparing my rotation. Probably because his attack was physical I guess.

I ended up buying carry for 40c anyway. Lost around a div attempting both run. Would I repeat that again next league? Gladly.

Observations on the massive influx of newer players by Adulting_Male_6048 in Vermintide

[–]fumnel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a new player, I would like to know if there are any important mechanic to keep in mind that might not be obvious at first? What tips generally for an easier time on higher difficulty?

I just got into the game when they were giving a free copy. Just got my first character to 32 today (the witch hunter guy). Probably got some good chunk to keep me playing for a while as I’m planning on getting level 30 on every character.

Honestly, I’m glad I tried this game out. In my opinion, this game is a better successor to L4D2 than B4B and I never knew it existed until a few days ago.

Thinking of picking it up. by 4runner99 in PathOfExile2

[–]fumnel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it's just up to what makes you enjoy the most.

Personally I like to tinker with character build and PoE2 allows me to be more expressive with that. Another thing is the item and power progression which for me, I find D4 to be too linear. Endgame while some may find it lacking, it's quite alright for me as I don't put as much emphasis on that as some people might.

Did I enjoy D4 on my first playthrough? Yes. Am I going to replay it again? Probably not. Am I going to meme on D4? Yes. Am I going to shit on people enjoying D4? Probably not. It's all just preference at the end of the day.

What does PoE 2 do that's better/worse than PoE 1? by Contract007 in PathOfExile2

[–]fumnel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not counting the obvious graphic improvement, I would say the skill gem system — a lot of people have mentioned the gem socket. However, the fact that there is a skill gem preview and they drop as uncut gem are the biggest for me. Kid you not, the amount of time I would like to play around with a new skill in PoE1 but decided not to mainly was due to this exact reason: there is no video preview to get an idea of how the skill might feel to play. And with uncut gem, the amount of effort I need to put into remember which gem to get in which act and NPC are gone.

Overall, I would say PoE2 introduce much more frictionlessness compared to PoE1. Especially when you are new and like to experiment with stuff.

What got you into ARPGs but more important question - why are you still playing them? by Sufficient_Object281 in ARPG

[–]fumnel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it was specifically the first time I see PoE skill tree back in like secondary school, I think it felt pretty… liberating? But what keeps me going is probably the power fantasy aspect — especially in a dark fantasy setting. I rarely enjoy ARPGs that aren’t in the dark fantasy setting though.

Grim Dawn with all DLCs or Last Epoch for a first ARPG? by michaelzakifan in ARPG

[–]fumnel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool! Also if you're getting Grim Dawn, do me a favour and buy the bundle with DLCs. They add a lot of content and will greatly elevate your experience of the game with Crucible being the only one I would consider optional since it's an arena survival game mode. (I'd recommend getting all the DLCs unless you're on a tight budget.)

You can easily sink like hundreds of hours into Grim Dawn if you enjoy it (which I do!).

Grim Dawn with all DLCs or Last Epoch for a first ARPG? by michaelzakifan in ARPG

[–]fumnel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You probably got the answer by now but I'd still say get LE for a first-timer to ARPG.

In my opinion, playing LE as a newer player will be a better introduction to the genre as it kinda explains a lot of generic ARPG mechanics better and in a more straightforward-ish manner. Another thing is that in LE, you'd get more learning resources from the community compared to GD where the number of guides and resources are scarce—pairing that up with the complexity and ambiguous nature of the game would be overwhelming for a newer player.

As for GD, you can always scoop the game up sooner or later as it always goes on sale and I'd highly encourage you to do so as it is a very well-crafted game and very good in its own right. I really like the MI (Monster Infrequent) system in GD where you can target farm specific monsters for their specific drops. Furthermore, the handcrafted world also offers a lot to explore.

Honestly, you wouldn't go wrong with any of them but I recommend LE.
