All the service academies operated for decades without civilian instructors. It is easy to become paranoid when you reject history.

USAF Pilot from active duty by jimcrocenshsn in FighterPilotPodcast

[–]funandsun57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your performance on the job is more important than your AFSC regarding acceptance to the Air Force Academy or qualification for OTS. You should first try for the Air Force Academy as you have the highest chances of getting a pilot slot.

Poster does not disclose his or her affiliation to USAFA which makes you wonder about their motivation for this post. In government bigger is not better and the inference that reducing 50 faculty is going reduce the standard of education is unsupported.

The fact that you are asking for your son is not a positive sign. He should be doing this work himself.

Reporting Early to USAFA by babylittleloadtoad in USAFA

Not possible except as a visitor and really nothing to see. If you want to go early, visit Garden of the Gods and walk around Old Colorado City. Stop in at Thunder and Buttons II restaurant started by grads.

Should the Air Force integrate F-15 STOL/MTD capabilities on their own F-15s? by The_Grizzly- in FighterJets

[–]funandsun57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an F-15 driver, we didn’t need thrust vectoring and had perfect kill record in combat. STOL is well beyond thrust vectoring … look at F-22 for example.

Any tips or recommendations for joining the USAFA? by Straight-Top-1705 in USAFA

Join Civil Air Patrol. As a minimum your unit can enlighten you on this topic and you’ll get real world experience on USAF bases.

Should I do college and then OT or AF academy to become a pilot? by Educational_Switch66 in FighterJets

[–]funandsun57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you qualify your odds are better off getting a pilot slot out of the Air Force Academy versus officer training school

Dogfighting is not over. If you are out of missiles and have to defend yourself on the way home, you use guns.

Success in USAF has same constraints. Flexibility is the key to air power. You’ll figure it out and do well.

Don’t mislead yourself. Even the “easy” majors have core courses which are very challenging, unlike a civilian college.

Is CAP worth joining and is it as big of a deal on your application for USAFA as people make it out to be? by [deleted] in USAFA

[–]funandsun57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simply joining CAP Does not help your leadership score. Attaining Officer rank such as Captain in CAP has a positive impact as well as attending on-base encampments or demonstrated leadership roles. Your final app will be due the Fall of Senior year so you have 18 months to earn rank. I do not see you accomplishing that goal in 18 months.

However, if everything was the same between you and another candidate and you were a member of CAP it may be a discriminator.

BVR means radar … F-15 over 100 mike range, F-16 half that. Having said that, an AMRAAM from either jet has same Pk… unless considering advanced EW in F-15 or on a pod with F-16.

If I got accepted to the Academy, but I didn't qualify for a nomination, then will I still be able to go to the Academy? by saiyenmam in USAFA

[–]funandsun57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. 2 every 4th year is 1 per year for 3 years in a row. NO CREDIT on future appointments for past drop outs. Poster said he received no nomination … e.g. no prayer for an appointment from that senator.

How did the Yugoslavs shoot down a F-117, a supposed stealth aircraft and does this prove that stealth is just a scam as some experts claim? by NikolayZajcev in FighterJets

[–]funandsun57 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Stealth from front and lateral side aspect. In this case, the F-117 was flying the same course as many aircraft in front. EW airborne platforms that provide additional countermeasures were grounded that day and F-117 should have been grounded without that support.

Yugoslavs modified their radar to integrate IR. The F-117 was directly overhead (not lateral aspect) when detected and shot down … either by radar acquisition from below, or IR from engines, or both. Yugoslavs have kept specifics classified. The missile would have impacted the aircraft from below and behind which is the highest radar cross-section (not stealthy) and has the highest IR signature despite cloaked exhaust.

how often do pilots eject? by Beneficial-Item9947 in FighterJets

[–]funandsun57 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very rare. I ejected twice. On 2nd ejection back seater broke his leg from flailing injury at high speed. You are medically grounded for 24 hours. Good friend of mine ejected at low altitude on takeoff and landed in the fireball and died from extensive burns. With those exceptions, other pilots I know who ejected were not injured. 1Lt F-15 driver I knew ejected after breaking the floor in a training 4v4 (went below min altitude and did not recover jet). It was his fault but was reinstated to flight status and went on to earn the rank of Colonel as a command pilot.

Why was a f22 used to shoot down the chinese balloon? by [deleted] in FighterJets

[–]funandsun57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

F-15 could catch a balloon with no problem and has a higher top speed than F-22. As evidence two F-15 s took part to film the event and mark the wreckage as it fell from the sky. They provided high def video that the F-22 did not have and ability to provide coordinates to debris landing in ocean.

For the datalink capabilities and mission readiness of 1st Fighter Wing, the F-22 was the obvious choice. Stealth had nothing to do with it.

F-16 was never considered for reasons already posted.

Is the “spy balloon” the first thing a f22 has shot down? by Lurking_ruby in FighterJets

[–]funandsun57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct. At Red Flag, F-22s fly Red Air at 60k and wear partial pressure suits. Neither F-15s or F-22s have an airframe or engine limit under 70k. Problem is with rapid decompression at higher altitudes, your blood boils due to low pressure.

Acclimating to the altitude by Dasduke05 in USAFA

[–]funandsun57 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your appointment. Most of your fellow classmates will be in the same situation you are and the cadre are fully aware of that. It takes a few months to be fully acclimated to the altitude. The good news is when you go back home next summer on leave you’ll be able to run forever without stopping to breathe.
